If Chris Brown just starts shouting "tiger blood" and "winning," can we all just laugh this off as some hilarious joke?

Anti-mist K-Lo (Phil D.), Tuesday, 22 March 2011 16:45 (fifteen years ago)

Just?

Anti-mist K-Lo (Phil D.), Tuesday, 22 March 2011 16:45 (fifteen years ago)

didn't think i'd see someone come in here and parrot chris brown's actual argument

blingee cummings (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 22 March 2011 16:46 (fifteen years ago)

wait, what was his actual argument

ancient, but very sexy (DJP), Tuesday, 22 March 2011 16:49 (fifteen years ago)

that we put up with charlie sheen's "things" but why not chris brown's

Godspeed HOOS! Black Steendriver (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Tuesday, 22 March 2011 16:51 (fifteen years ago)

uh Charlie Sheen actually SHOT his wife fwiw

Hyper Rescue Troop (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 22 March 2011 16:51 (fifteen years ago)

also I'm not sure how much Charlie Sheen is being "tolerated" considering he lost his job, custody of his children, and most people are just laughing at him, not approving of him

Hyper Rescue Troop (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 22 March 2011 16:52 (fifteen years ago)

Chris Brown, it must be said, is a stupid motherfucker.

ancient, but very sexy (DJP), Tuesday, 22 March 2011 16:53 (fifteen years ago)

I was actually trying to make the opposite of Chris Brown's argument. They're both assholes and should both be shunned.

xxp Yeah and he's crying all the way to the bank after selling millions of dollars in tickets for his live shows. At, with, it's all the same when the checks get cashed.

Anti-mist K-Lo (Phil D.), Tuesday, 22 March 2011 16:54 (fifteen years ago)

market sez: Charlie Sheen, more entertaining performer than Chris Brown

Hyper Rescue Troop (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 22 March 2011 16:55 (fifteen years ago)

xp: in fairness, those millions of dollars will go straight into drugs and prostitutes so it's not like Sheen himself is setting himself up for an extended future or anything

ancient, but very sexy (DJP), Tuesday, 22 March 2011 16:55 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah and he's crying all the way to the bank after selling millions of dollars in tickets for his live shows

wait maybe I misunderstood - was this in reference to Brown or Sheen (is Sheen doing "live shows"? this is news to me)

Hyper Rescue Troop (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 22 March 2011 16:56 (fifteen years ago)

Sheen is, and they sold out so quickly he added more.

ancient, but very sexy (DJP), Tuesday, 22 March 2011 16:57 (fifteen years ago)

ilxor you've listened to one odd future album once (ilxor), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 14:49 (fifteen years ago)

if CB had attacked dee barnes would that have ended his career?

Magnum PI and Fashion-Forward Dudes (Eazy), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 14:53 (fifteen years ago)

yesterday I heard a radio DJ accidentally pronounce the title of his new album as "F.E.M.A." -- seemed appropriate

some dude, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 15:09 (fifteen years ago)

Isn't Chris Brown also crying all the way to the bank?

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 15:10 (fifteen years ago)

well not so much "crying" as "breaking windows and showing off terrible tattoos", but yes

ancient, but very sexy (DJP), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 15:16 (fifteen years ago)

his new Sisqo hairdo is hilarious

some dude, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 15:19 (fifteen years ago)

especially since it seems entirely half-assed, like he did it himself in the dark

still confused at how ridiculously supportive BET has been for Brown... there's GOT to be some sort of financial connection there (above and beyond exploiting talent)

I just want to give a shout-out to Buzzy Beetles (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 15:31 (fifteen years ago)

not really surprising, black radio has been just as forgiving/supportive for presumably the same reasons

some dude, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 15:32 (fifteen years ago)

lol

guys, sometimes it is as simple as "skin color"

ancient, but very sexy (DJP), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 15:33 (fifteen years ago)

Still disappointed Jay-Z didn't have him exiled.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 15:36 (fifteen years ago)

xp i'm kinda lost at the concept that, having "paid penance", Brown thinks he's not obliged to address this issue ever again. it's reminiscent of the "... but you fuck ONE hedgehog" joke

and really? you think as long as he's black he gets the unconditional support of the black community regardless of his destructive and abusive behavior? well then what about
um
wait
trying to think of a black celebrity whose horrible behavior has lost them the support of the black community
um
no, he's still okay too
in prison but okay
still making records
going to court but okay
um
well maybe if he were gay? or the president?

I just want to give a shout-out to Buzzy Beetles (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 15:37 (fifteen years ago)

hypothesis: if chris brown was the gay president THEN he would lose the support of BET

I just want to give a shout-out to Buzzy Beetles (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 15:38 (fifteen years ago)

the closest you're going to get is OJ and look how long that took

ancient, but very sexy (DJP), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 15:39 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, he was my "in prison but okay" actually.

I just want to give a shout-out to Buzzy Beetles (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 15:42 (fifteen years ago)

i think it's not just race but also genre and music. BET and urban radio are very much driven by a young female audience that treat every moderately talented male R&B singer like the greatest star the world has ever known (and don't listen as much to the more pop-leaning Rihanna).

some dude, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 15:43 (fifteen years ago)

"but also genre and gender," i meant to say.

some dude, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 15:44 (fifteen years ago)

i think people would be far more willing to let him "move on" if he had exhibited any convincing shame or remorse at any point, rather than constantly trying to minimise the severity of what he did and throwing his toys out of the pram whenever he's called on his bs.

the industry's support of him is depressing but the fact that he still has an army of loyal, hysterical teenage girl fans just makes me so uncomfortable. wtf are they thinking?

lex pretend, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 15:44 (fifteen years ago)

xp see i dunno about that because there's a lot of easily disposable figures who are arguably or inarguably more talented than brown but just haven't had the staying power or are as likely to be hotly contested as "indispensible".... dude gets more BET love than say Lloyd or even Ne-Yo really

I just want to give a shout-out to Buzzy Beetles (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 15:45 (fifteen years ago)

the weird thing about his continued career is that, when he was first disgraced, i thought that would be pretty much it - he's really a very disposable artist, only his dance skills stand out - it'd be so easy to just move on to the next vaguely cute, sexy male w/teen appeal who can sing and dance a bit - i guess that's what happened to trey songz to an extent. but there was nothing irreplaceable about chris brown

ha xp

lex pretend, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 15:46 (fifteen years ago)

the army of teenage fangirls is, i'm afraid, a sort of weird hormonally unbalanced manifestation of the Twilight effect where actual sex and long term relationships are unthinkable but "he hurts me because he loves me" is much more accessible and personal

I just want to give a shout-out to Buzzy Beetles (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 15:47 (fifteen years ago)

That's because he can be seen as being persecuted, and the mothering instict kicks in for these 15-25 year olds. xp

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 15:47 (fifteen years ago)

the fact that he still has an army of loyal, hysterical teenage girl fans just makes me so uncomfortable. wtf are they thinking?

basically i want, like, a really strong adult feminist to sit down with each of these girls and give them some #realtalk

lex pretend, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 15:47 (fifteen years ago)

and i still love brown's heavily produced goofy club songs when he does them right; there's just been a dearth of them lately.

I just want to give a shout-out to Buzzy Beetles (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 15:48 (fifteen years ago)

aretha franklin's #realtalk, sundays at nine pm EST on OWN

I just want to give a shout-out to Buzzy Beetles (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 15:49 (fifteen years ago)

I'm not denying that there isn't a significant financial motivator behind promoting him, but there are a whole host of external factors/pressures on "the black community" at large that causes sheltering even the most obviously despicable person, usually coming from the twin impulses of "the rest of the world is beating this person down, someone needs to offer support" and "divided we are easier to conquer" that you really can't ignore.

Although conversely Justin Timberlake exposed a woman on live national television and somehow everyone managed to blame her, so it is certainly more complicated than just "it's race, stupid"; just don't sleep on how large a factor that actually is.

ancient, but very sexy (DJP), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 15:49 (fifteen years ago)

it's race then gender then class stupid, except when it's in the opposite order.

I just want to give a shout-out to Buzzy Beetles (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 15:50 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I still can't figure out how Janet's the one who takes the sole blame for that one. xp

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 15:50 (fifteen years ago)

Ne-Yo's fanbase is older and broader (i.e. less breathlessly loyal tweens), Lloyd was never as big a star. CB's first two albums were massive, like the teenybopper equivalent of Usher's Confessions.

some dude, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 15:52 (fifteen years ago)

i'm trying to think of a black female celebrity who's been similarly disgraced - do remy ma and lil kim still have the support of the black community in the main? not the best parallels i admit

lex pretend, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 15:52 (fifteen years ago)

That's because he can be seen as being persecuted, and the mothering instict kicks in for these 15-25 year olds.

^^^this is so OTFM. befuddled that people - particularly pop radio fans - don't get this. the narrative is everything. Chris Brown's beating Rihanna makes him MORE marketable, because it makes him controversial. duh.
