ive been craving chillwaves pop moment lately, & missing the cautiously upbeat sentiments buried under tape hiss & delays that i was hearing in some of the trax from last year. idk here are five tracks ive really been listening too this month, sorry if thats sorta self-agrandizing
dale earnhardt jr. jr. - nothing but our love
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wm1p3jl-7b4this is 'older' at least in the universe of five blog posts a day + unlimited mediafire d/lers but i keep coming back to this song - its central sentiment of 'dont try/dont try so hard/my love is easy' and the way the track squiggles and sways against the vocal harmonies makes me sad but i like how self-aware & essentially knowing the singer is. 'we get more than we deserve' indeed
cool runnings - i am you (starslinger remix)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFxLXj2FOCcdominique & the new star slinger ep reminded me of this song, which i think is fantastic. the remix adds the echo & as much space as the endless blue sky but ties it the simplest thump. its a good example of how 'chillwave' songs can use static structures & a 'poor' range to make something catchy & pop & feeling
peaking lights - key sparrow
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVgFaAZn8ccthe titular sparrow is 'much too common' & 'nothing special' but this is my fave track on the new album & its laidback sunny melancholy is perfectly pitched imo. a hazy ode to trying and failing, a recognition of limitations
young athletes leauge - glossed over
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUsMqqpdJy8haha kinda dont have much to say abt this i think the bones of the track sound like the sorta thing u cld make on the playstation two mtv music generator game
death and vanilla - ghosts in the machine
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YWnqdPE-S0a friend told me that this is a p direct reference of some 80s thing but i cant remember what she sd. i hear a noir morricone filtered through early english dream pop. i dont think it really matters tho bcuz this is such a perfect marriage of emotional intent & technical skill the track just glides. i think its really beautiful

have u heard this album belong - common erahttp://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wu5Smvch0ZI/TbgzDURs5eI/AAAAAAAAAgM/BB97IbyPyfQ/s1600/Belong_Common%2BEra.jpegits mb more darkwave or something than chillwave but really beautiful & good, the vocals are breathy & lush though not evil at all. apparently they have been around for a while making ambient stuff, some long moments of that. there might be a million albums of stuff that sounds just like this (esp today) but, i haven't heard it. kind of perfect very simple, so few constituents & a really constant but deep movement thruout

i do like grimes stuff, i bought a cdr a while ago that is pretty good cant seem to find it. only time i hear chillwave atmospherically here is on the pa at the loft where i first saw her, & seems to be more & more going on there lately. sounds more like 90s trip hop to me than most stuff here. my fav local chillwave thing is d'eon, sometimes pretty clubby & silly, 90s house, breakbeats, some of its close to the starsling stuff upthread

this band vondelpark i've been loving them like a lot. I feel like i want to start a thread about them but they've just released a couple of things. they live just up the road from me in peckham apparently but they have this shrouded in tumblr internet-absence thing going on so I dont actually know what they look like or anything. this song reminds me of staying up to watch movies on tv at my parents house during the summer holidays. like when the house is quiet and dark but everything feels close and humid. it feels bleary eyed and yearning. Its feeding into the feelings i'm having about this summer a lot and in a way i don't think i can articulate right now.

Why do Ford & Lopatin get tagged as chillwave? I seriously dont' understand that at all.
― Clarke B., Friday, 5 August 2011 15:08 (thirteen years ago) link
this probably is more of tumblr post but its origins are in ilx so:
i've been thinking a fair bit about the discussion/argument that i had w/ whiney on i guess another thread about the value of 'chillwave' & particularly about the way 'nostalgia' functions as an important emotional and aesthetic throughline w/in the 'genre'. upthread i ref'd lovecraft saying 'the past is real. it's all there is' & i think this is vital to understanding in large part whats attractive/'relevant' about chillwave/the larger cultural moment. like i was reading robertson davies today and he was saying something about how 'history is the way we make sense of the present' but how do we make sense of a present that is largely indistinguishable from the past?
this evening i was djing a party where they wanted '90s classics' and it was both disconcerting and unremarkable to see ppl barely out of their teens dancing along to mid-90s house classix; there was little to no divide btw the people who might be old enough to remember the songs i was playing fondly & the people for whom these songs should have little personal/historical meaning... isnt one of the consequences of technology to help divorce cultural artifacts from history? or put another way: if i still have access to the cultural products and ephemera of my childhood via youtube, torrents, ebay &c &c isnt my affection/consumption of them essentially present-tense?
i mean plax has been smarter/more eloquent about this but i think the more retro-steeped parts of 'chillwave' are partly about confronting a past that constantly surrounds us and dealing w/ the difference in emotional states btw 'then' and 'now'. or more clearly in talking about how the past never leaves us both emotionally (we still have access to those memory/feelings) or culturally (i still hear/see those songs/vidz) it makes explicit how pervasive our personal histories are, and how lonely that feels. taking the new washed out record for example i think you can hear this lack of delineation btw modern/historical - the music doesnt really seem to speak formally of any specific moment in time while also sounding vaguely 'dated'. but also taking the lazier, more direct signifier type of thing e.g 'i named my band MIRCO MACHINES remember MICRO MACHINES' this is also a kind of confirmation, of course i remember micro machines, i could buy them on ebay if wanted, theres no mystery or distance but a basic affirmation. i think whiney would probably scoff at this but when our shared culture is so fragmented that kind of confirmation, that we exist at the same time, is kinda valuable/meaningful?
i quoted proust too itt but this isnt about creating madelines but about erecting signposts in a time when memory and experience are almost interchangeable. & this all comes back to my posts about anxiety, in this equation the future stands resolutely outside our xp but the past is perfectly ours, knowable and controlled. so it becomes a refuge.
― Lamp, Sunday, 7 August 2011 07:22 (thirteen years ago) link
idk thats pretty convincing but im not sure "the past is perfectly ours" i think the fraught knowability/unknowability of the past is central to how i grasp this whole thing. like the pieces are there but you can never put them back together again.
― ℗⎣▲✘ (ico), Sunday, 7 August 2011 18:55 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah i think your right i was p drunk when i wrote this, not that i dont stand behind the central idea but its not totally coherent... there are tensions i guess btw the past as lost eden and the past as slave to the present, thats part of whats driving the music really
― Lamp, Sunday, 7 August 2011 20:29 (thirteen years ago) link
man vondelpark is p great - really into 'california analog dream' its kinda like a mid 00s indie rock song stretched taut and irradiated

i dont where else to post about this but ken seeno's tape on nna 'invisible surfer on an invisible wave' is so fucking great just these incredible expanses of synth and space but firmly rooted in the 'natural'. i guess it probably belongs on the knew age thread but i like this thread better and knew agers are just chillwavers in the morning anyway

probably not the best song on their ep but i like how much of a pastiche this particular song is the heaviness of the affections make it seem kinda rootless a bristol board collage of montone dreampop and euro influences

That's it right there. Good music is good music. Young people aren't supposed to be able to recognize and enjoy good music? The whole cult of the new, and the obsession with timeliness is imo, a strange type of insanity promoted by journalists who are taught to think only about the news.
