There's a band called "No, They're The Good Swastikas" and if you never heard some kid say that in high school, then you must have went to some prissy frou-frou private school

now that i know it's impossible to offend anyone born after 1986 with harmless li'l words i should ask j0rdan if he'd wear a sweater that said "free this faggot jew"

i said that with that context, its more bearable for a listener
that is not the same thing at all

i was raised on welfare & dont say 'faggot' so do try to pay attention to the words im actually saying instead of the words you wish i was saying so you could turn this thread into another idiotfest
― deej, Monday, 14 March 2011 21:29 (fifteen years ago)
maybe we did not invent it but i think j0rdan & i's generation brought this to the next level ito both absolute offensiveness of content & it being more widespread & ubiquitous, reaching tuff kids nerds jocks skateboarders rap fans alike. & also ito becoming so commonplace & a natural part of our language. don't deny previous generations did it to a great degree & don't think it's necessarily part of a greater trend of descent but just like i was really young when i first watched south park, what is the precedent that was as or more offensive for previous generations?
― flopson, Monday, 14 March 2011 21:30 (fifteen years ago)
you brought it to the internet via 4chan, thats it.
― i been serving humble pie since he had small faces (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 14 March 2011 21:32 (fifteen years ago)
i'd broadly agree but slightly shift what deej said about context being important - it's more about what else the artist can bring to the table; like i enjoy several JA dancehall artists who i'm sure are actually homophobic (and as j0rdan says i don't think that OF are IRL), because i get so much else out of buju banton/beenie man songs. and that's been the case for most rappers who've dropped the occasional "faggot" too. it's just not the case here.
so yeah, i can't honestly say "faggot" or other expressions homophobia are dealbreakers for me, but even w/artists i love it's still something that should be called out and not just tolerated - if i'd got to interview nicki i'd 100% have pulled her up on letting eminem say "faggot" on "roman's revenge" - and when it's deliberately put front & centre of an act's schtick as it is here, well, sure that's what the conversation should be about.

im critiquing the music here. the entire subtext of L's music was that he was coming from a violent place. as a listener, to me, this makes it less in-your-face ... its part of the entire world he creates as an artist. w/ odd future, that world is just kids who like to use offensive shock-tactics, and tyler's occasional forays into psychological impact of his dad leaving him dont strike me as being deep enough contextually, are too limited & uncommon, to make up for this
this doesnt mean tyler's not a nicer guy than big l. it just means that doesnt matter
― deej, Monday, 14 March 2011 21:35 (fifteen years ago)

before this goes any further i want to highlight the part where there seems to be some misunderstanding:
"the entire subtext of his career was the fighting-for-your-life growing up in harlem where ppl get shot on a daily basis ('street struck,') the violence & shock tactics are intended to draw attention to how supposedly-evil its made him -- he doesnt throw around 'faggot' to one up ppl on twitter"
in other words, the subtext here is his CAREER, as in his MUSIC, not his life or how poor he 'actually was' -- i dont know why u guys assume i meant 'because hes poor and from the streets hes allowd to say faggot!' except that you have some caricature of who i am and what i think in your heads at all times
i dont know why i rile so many of you dudes up so badly considering jordan's the one in here saying shit like 'all feminist critiques of music are worthless' except that hes got more e-friends

it was just so nice being able to follow and enjoy conversations about rap music while you were gone is all w/o this posing, hardman fronting shit you pull is all. you're a guy with a broad base of knowledge in music I care about and much to share, but as soon as any rap thread threatens to get interesting, you just start shitting all over the place, and it's just such a bummer. Jordan's full of shit in the line you quote too but I hardly see what it has to do w/anything other than your weird cliquish take on how ilx works ("If Jordan said something stupid & I did too omg unfair!" -- bad look man), frankly "feminist critiques of music are worthless" seems like such a self-invalidating point (really? without google, which feminists are you talking about? even with google, "worthless" is pretty intense, you might wanna bear that out a little) that one just ignores it. But here if it'll make you happy, Jordan that's an idiotic thing to say
you rile people up badly because you are incapable of admitting that when, over the course of many years, people tend to hear your speech/writing a certain way, ~the problem is probably not their preconceived notions of you, but something about how you talk/write.~ I don't think my voice sounds nasal, but 20 years of people saying so leads me to understand that yes, it does.
