lex, you're someone that is v vocal about hating "comedy" so your dislike of OF is not surprising in the least to me

thing is, most of my favourite rappers i actually love because i find them funny...like OF are way less overtly "comedic" than ludacris or nicki minaj

lex pretend, Monday, 14 March 2011 21:19 (fifteen years ago)

i remember j@son furl@nd drew swatikas on his notebook in 5th grade i was like woah dude but his sisters were sluts and i think he drank already. he gave himself a prison tattoo with a needle and thread and india ink in 7th grade art class. he like iron maiden and black sabbath and shit but then in jr high he got into hip hop.

and oh yeah the jerk girls - see that is ridiculous and slightly misanthropic teenage humour that i'm 100% down with

lex pretend, Monday, 14 March 2011 21:20 (fifteen years ago)

j0rdan theres a reason ppl argue that tyler is at his most interesting when hes talking about stuff like lilsoulbrother was talking about ... empty shock is nothing, it becomes a statement when there's come kind of context. and frankly the contextual stuff here is a whole lot thinner than it was for big l

deej, Monday, 14 March 2011 21:20 (fifteen years ago)

deej your argument of "big l saw a lot of violence and grew up poor so it's cool for him to rap constantly about killing faggots" is pretty condescending

there's always the kid in school who draws swastikas on his folders - it's always a him - and tries to claim they're the other way round

lex pretend, Monday, 14 March 2011 21:20 (fifteen years ago)

i knew a kid that tattooed a swatiska on the bottom of his foot with india ink

deej i get the argument you're making but the way you went straight to "but he was from HARLEM" was kinda lol

some dude, Monday, 14 March 2011 21:22 (fifteen years ago)

There's a band called "No, They're The Good Swastikas" and if you never heard some kid say that in high school, then you must have went to some prissy frou-frou private school

i been serving humble pie since he had small faces (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 14 March 2011 21:22 (fifteen years ago)

also i'm sure if twitter was popping in 1995 that big l would've dropped a "faggot" every so often

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 March 2011 21:23 (fifteen years ago)

harlem, where the life expectancy is equivelant to a third world country? where he was murdered bcuz his brother was involved in drugs & L got killed out of revenge? cmon

now that i know it's impossible to offend anyone born after 1986 with harmless li'l words i should ask j0rdan if he'd wear a sweater that said "free this faggot jew"

some dude, Monday, 14 March 2011 21:24 (fifteen years ago)

as a faggot jew myself, maybe

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 March 2011 21:24 (fifteen years ago)

honestly i thought this was the post that was gonna earn j0rdan a pile-on:

i was raised on welfare & dont say 'faggot' so do try to pay attention to the words im actually saying instead of the words you wish i was saying so you could turn this thread into another idiotfest

deej, Monday, 14 March 2011 21:29 (fifteen years ago)

maybe we did not invent it but i think j0rdan & i's generation brought this to the next level ito both absolute offensiveness of content & it being more widespread & ubiquitous, reaching tuff kids nerds jocks skateboarders rap fans alike. & also ito becoming so commonplace & a natural part of our language. don't deny previous generations did it to a great degree & don't think it's necessarily part of a greater trend of descent but just like i was really young when i first watched south park, what is the precedent that was as or more offensive for previous generations?

flopson, Monday, 14 March 2011 21:30 (fifteen years ago)

you brought it to the internet via 4chan, thats it.

i been serving humble pie since he had small faces (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 14 March 2011 21:32 (fifteen years ago)

i'd broadly agree but slightly shift what deej said about context being important - it's more about what else the artist can bring to the table; like i enjoy several JA dancehall artists who i'm sure are actually homophobic (and as j0rdan says i don't think that OF are IRL), because i get so much else out of buju banton/beenie man songs. and that's been the case for most rappers who've dropped the occasional "faggot" too. it's just not the case here.

so yeah, i can't honestly say "faggot" or other expressions homophobia are dealbreakers for me, but even w/artists i love it's still something that should be called out and not just tolerated - if i'd got to interview nicki i'd 100% have pulled her up on letting eminem say "faggot" on "roman's revenge" - and when it's deliberately put front & centre of an act's schtick as it is here, well, sure that's what the conversation should be about.

looooool A+

ilxor you've listened to one odd future album once (ilxor), Monday, 14 March 2011 21:33 (fifteen years ago)

im critiquing the music here. the entire subtext of L's music was that he was coming from a violent place. as a listener, to me, this makes it less in-your-face ... its part of the entire world he creates as an artist. w/ odd future, that world is just kids who like to use offensive shock-tactics, and tyler's occasional forays into psychological impact of his dad leaving him dont strike me as being deep enough contextually, are too limited & uncommon, to make up for this

this doesnt mean tyler's not a nicer guy than big l. it just means that doesnt matter

deej, Monday, 14 March 2011 21:35 (fifteen years ago)

sleepingbag, Monday, 14 March 2011 21:50 (fifteen years ago)

before this goes any further i want to highlight the part where there seems to be some misunderstanding:

"the entire subtext of his career was the fighting-for-your-life growing up in harlem where ppl get shot on a daily basis ('street struck,') the violence & shock tactics are intended to draw attention to how supposedly-evil its made him -- he doesnt throw around 'faggot' to one up ppl on twitter"

in other words, the subtext here is his CAREER, as in his MUSIC, not his life or how poor he 'actually was' -- i dont know why u guys assume i meant 'because hes poor and from the streets hes allowd to say faggot!' except that you have some caricature of who i am and what i think in your heads at all times

i dont know why i rile so many of you dudes up so badly considering jordan's the one in here saying shit like 'all feminist critiques of music are worthless' except that hes got more e-friends

in terms of the quality of the music & my interest in listening to it, it does

i dont know why u guys assume i meant 'because hes poor and from the streets hes allowd to say faggot!' except

when multiple ppl are reading something differently than you intended, it means that you probably worded it wrong
