So what should a traditionalist listening experience schmuck like me do?

well, the answer is either get over yourself or just be content not following the genre (ie w/o constantly talking about how you can't follow it any more)

lex pretend, Sunday, 13 March 2011 09:37 (fifteen years ago)

That's harsh, lex, this is the first time vie mentioned not being able to follow the genre because of this, because I only realised that was probably the reason this morning!

yeah, still my fave ofwgkta track. "swastikas on the lettermen" is such a great image, reminds me of "man in the high castle" or something.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 13 March 2011 20:31 (fifteen years ago)

There's little or not distinction between a mixtape and an album in rap these days. Bastard is definitely an album, just a free one.

Number None, Sunday, 13 March 2011 20:45 (fifteen years ago)

ehh it seems like there's lots of talk about mixtapes having a "tossed-off" quality a lot of times? idk

thank you ilxor for starting this much needed thread (ilxor), Sunday, 13 March 2011 21:28 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, i was gonna say that bastard is an album. the link way up there that Ed put up is a mix of OFWGKTA stuff and it's a very good one.

I just want to give a shout-out to Buzzy Beetles (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 13 March 2011 21:30 (fifteen years ago)

Well the tossed-off kind of mixtape still exists but then there's stuff like Trunk Muzik, K.R.I.T. Wuz Here etc. which is as musically and thematically cohesive as any album. Wasn't Flockavelli originally supposed to be a mixtape too? Bastard is an album, it just doesn't have a physical edition. This goes for EARL, Rolling Papers, and BlackenedWhite too.

Number None, Sunday, 13 March 2011 21:36 (fifteen years ago)

okay so i listened to tyler creator 'bastard' front to back and it wasnt actively bad or boring but the overall vibe is basically eminem c. 1999 or something? like, "french" is his "just don't give a fuck" (look he can curse and make offensive jokes!!), "sarah" is his "kim" (look he hates women!!), "bastard"/"inglorious" are whichever of em's songs are about hating his parents (can't recall)... an hour of spitting and basically i learned a few things about tyler-

1. he hates his dad a lot
2. he likes coke/weed/valium/etc. a lot
3. he like to fuck/rape girls a lot
4. he likes to kill girls occasionally
5. he is not gay
6. he doesn't like to go to school
7. ???

i mean his delivery's kinda interesting i guess- 'distinctive', easy to listen to? and the beats were just kinda 'there'- sounded homemade, not bad, not great? that's really the best couple things i can say about the album. i'll wait for the debut on XL but hopefully dude will grow up a bit (jokes arent offensive, just dull as fuck) and let someone more talented help w/ the beats. of course then he'll probably be as boring as eminem c. 2004 and onward...

suddenly realizing how crucial it is that tyler gets dj holiday to host GOBLIN

flopson, Monday, 14 March 2011 00:33 (fifteen years ago)

i still really like "yonkers" though, but sad to say nothing on 'bastard' comes close imo

also EARL sounds more like Yonkers

did you not hear AssMilk?

yeah i heard it, the one w/ earl & tyler trading off, one of the better trax maybe? just looked up the lyrics and saw the "reincarnation of '98 eminem" line, hah. didn't catch that the first time around but earl otm

thank you ilxor for starting this much needed thread (ilxor), Monday, 14 March 2011 01:00 (fifteen years ago)

tbf i don't see bastard as anywhere near the best ofwgkta tape. earl, blackendwhite and the dena tape, and the mike g now i think about it are better imo. still not listened to the jet age ones.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Monday, 14 March 2011 01:04 (fifteen years ago)

Lil B will NEVER be Mudhoney. He's closer to the Pixies. I fucking hate you al shipley and your buddy who is writing the book about dogs in sunglasses.

I feel very ignorant and "not with it." I avoided this thread because the name of the collective sounded like an indie band i wouldn't get into. Anyway, I finally saw the "Yonkers" video and hated it. It felt like a poor man's Jackass music video.

Last night, I finally listened to Tyler, the Creator's Bastard album/mixtape last night and I have mixed feelings about it. When I heard the first song, "Bastard", I was intrigued. I automatically felt for the kid when describing his life with the piano chords and his gruff voice trying to sound apathetic.

However, what made me feel mixed was the homophobia and the repeated themes already expressed in "Bastard." As I was listening I wondered why do you hate "faggots" and the likes. It made me think he was trying to overcompensate for not having a father around so gay men are the ultimate faceless boogie man to let out his anger.

Though the "Bastard" themes get tiresome by midway the album, they did make me think how hard it is for young U.S. black males (straight, gay, bisexual) and the insecurities we develop due to us not being American standards. Two lyrics really stood out for me which was Tyler calling himself a self racist (which could be due to him being a dark skin black male and the prejudice we get from society because we look dangerous/mad all the time), and that the only way he can get his dick sucked was by a drunk white girl (could speak of the exoticism white people have of black people and Tyler willingness to accept it so he can have some sort of physical contact.)

The music to me is the second star of the show. The beats are fucking raw as fuck. I can definitely hear the Neptunes influence in his sparse work (especially in the 808 drum work).

Actually funny enough Tyler use to frequent a Neptunes fan forum I'm a member of and he would always post about his music on there. I never thought anything of it and never listened. I wish I would have because despite my hating his homophobia and hoping he grows up from that I am proud of the kid nonetheless.

Okay Pet Shop Boys Aren't That Bad. (lilsoulbrother), Monday, 14 March 2011 19:33 (fifteen years ago)

agree the homophobia stands out like a sore thumb. like, i know he's young, etc. and probably has some family issues, but i'm not gonna listen to & support you if bigotry comes up repeatedly in yr music, whether it's in jest or not... suspect others are with me? i mean sure it's hard to avoid the occasional use of gay slurs in hip-hop, and i can avoid it if it's not all over yr music (lookin' at you ghostface) but tyler's album is just plastered front to back with that stuff- kinda sad, imho

thank you ilxor for starting this much needed thread (ilxor), Monday, 14 March 2011 19:41 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah and judging from the number of people in the Odd Future collective one of those guys are bound to be queer to some degree. I can see why Tyler's music can be an outlet for a bunch of kids experiencing the same things he is going through, but using gay men as your anger outlet is NOT OKAY!!!!!!

I hope he isn't one of those when I say "gay" or "faggot" I mean this and not actual gay people. Because a message like that is very fuzzy and not answering the question completely. I'm disappointed that the Billboard reporter did not address this in their article.

Okay Pet Shop Boys Aren't That Bad. (lilsoulbrother), Monday, 14 March 2011 19:48 (fifteen years ago)

syd tha kyd is gay iirc

I love victorias but I've chosen maidenform (Edward III), Monday, 14 March 2011 19:54 (fifteen years ago)

"occasional use of gay slurs"

dude, its fucking everywhere in hiphop. i dunno why ghostface being a homophobe some of the time makes him less offensive than ofwgkta being homophobes some of the time

lilsoulbrother: there is a gay in the group. not a boy though.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Monday, 14 March 2011 20:01 (fifteen years ago)

When I first started really fucking with Odd Future heavy, my dad was like, "Really? They talk about some crazy shit and as a female, you're slapping a lot of women in the face."

I'm like, "That's what I do. I slap bitches."

I love victorias but I've chosen maidenform (Edward III), Monday, 14 March 2011 20:09 (fifteen years ago)

I am well aware of Syd The Kid and her being lesbian but that still doesn't excuse the fact that Tyler may have something against gay men. When mentioning his homophobia, I did it not in a GLAAD way of denouncing him to homophobic hell. I mentioned in a way that it is an unfortunate scar in his artistic aesthetic. Like he is great with the beats, voice, lyrics (well need work on those a little), and the likes. It's just the homophobia is a big pink elephant in the room (pun intended).

Okay Pet Shop Boys Aren't That Bad. (lilsoulbrother), Monday, 14 March 2011 20:13 (fifteen years ago)

the elephant in the room that everyone is talking about

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 14 March 2011 20:14 (fifteen years ago)

Apparently no one is talking about it with Tyler.

Okay Pet Shop Boys Aren't That Bad. (lilsoulbrother), Monday, 14 March 2011 20:16 (fifteen years ago)

they seem to say a lot of stuff for shock value and then act surprised or amused when people are offended -- i mean that's an old old game to play but on some weird level i'd rather people who use those terms just commit to it and say ok i'm a homophobe, i hate gay people, than to play this game where if you take them at face value or point out that's a shitty thing to say they'll kinda laugh it off and act like you lost the game (or to take a page from the Eminem playbook and make gestures that imply he's not homophobic without ever actually addressing or apologizing for homophobic lyrics)
