some thoughts now that i have time
• deej, I do think OF production has a distinct SOUND. Beyond the RZA and Neptunes that clearly define them, theyre def up on the aesthetics of contemprary lo-fi indie rock (ie, Salem, Toro Y Moi, Ariel Pink) and so their sound definitely has a kind of water-logged, burnt-edges, mushed out, cassette-friendly sound that is very unique to them. The only rap producers who I think maybe flirt with a similar sound is like Sensational or Edan and shit. And obviously the Stones Throw axis, but a Madlib beat obv based on SAMPLES, and OF gets props for very rarely using samples (another reason their music translates so well to getting picked up my record labels)
• Re: "Def Jux circa 11," that whole scene was built on a similar DIY model (i believe "independent as fuck" was bandied around plenty) and hatred of mainstream rap, real or implied by fans (get off me go fuck puffy vs bruno mars/esophagus etc). But one thing all those ca 90s rappers had that OF doesnt is an obsession with "the art," "the craft," "the elements." Not that OF aren't skilled, but they're also the type to call Boogie Down Productions and Gravediggaz wack bullshit.
• It really is silly to me that there isn't some small, boutiquey rap label putting out hard copies of successful mixtapes. Not like Fabolous rapping over Rich Boy beats or whatever, but the ones that live on their own beats and have no "DJ PRODUCE GOT THAT FRUIT" bullshit and play like albums. Like the big tapes from Big KRIT, Playboy Tre and Roach Gigz in 2010. Those could all sell a quick 4 or 5 thou easy for any label that dared put them on CD. Easy money for the artist and something to hold. Like I kind of wish some enterprising Jagjaguwar/Sub Pop/Merge type would pick up the ball on this one. I guess OF is an easy one to start with because they really do have a very vocal white/hipster/indierock audience as a big chunk of their fanbase. But I think there's nothing stopping that crew from getting into KRIT a little heavier. Def has more actual cred/authenticity (ie, the stuff that's important to white/hipster/indierock audiences) than whatever Arsonists/All Natural/Paul Barman/Sucka MCs/The Shining/D-Stroy ish that indie rock labels were putting our ca. 1999.

rofl @ "DJ PRODUCE GOT THAT FRUIT"
― J0rdan S., Saturday, 12 March 2011 21:58 (fifteen years ago)
i think krit is probably being prepped for a bigger label release
― deej, Saturday, 12 March 2011 22:02 (fifteen years ago)
i do agree that the rap market is incredibly under valued in terms of potential sales right now
even a major label would be smart to do a small run of KRIT WUZ HERE and you know they fucking wont
― Whiney On The Goon (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 12 March 2011 22:03 (fifteen years ago)
part of me wants to like call my friends at [popular indie record label] and get this ball rolling myself
― Whiney On The Goon (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 12 March 2011 22:05 (fifteen years ago)
thought krit got snapped up by def jam?

Yeah he is
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 13 March 2011 01:00 (fifteen years ago)
because an artist has never fallen through the cracks and lost any career momentum at def jam before
― Samuel (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 13 March 2011 08:24 (fifteen years ago)
Everything I've read about OF intrigues me and I'd like to hear them, but I'm such a stan/aspie for CSs that I think mixtape DIY culture has probably been a big barrier to me following any hip hop in the last, what, 7 years? Likewise other tape/DIY reliant genres (noise, chillwave).
So what should a traditionalist listening experience schmuck like me do?
― lol sickmouthy (Scik Mouthy), Sunday, 13 March 2011 08:34 (fifteen years ago)
CSs = CDs if you couldn't guess.
well tyler's new album is gonna be released physically in april, so wait a month or so?
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 13 March 2011 08:43 (fifteen years ago)
& then the mellowhype album is being re-released physically in the summer, so there's that
otherwise, everything is downloads
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 13 March 2011 08:44 (fifteen years ago)
well, the answer is either get over yourself or just be content not following the genre (ie w/o constantly talking about how you can't follow it any more)
― lex pretend, Sunday, 13 March 2011 09:37 (fifteen years ago)
That's harsh, lex, this is the first time vie mentioned not being able to follow the genre because of this, because I only realised that was probably the reason this morning!

Think there's a version with BrandDun Deshay's verse on "Session" replaced by one from Mike G.

yeah, still my fave ofwgkta track. "swastikas on the lettermen" is such a great image, reminds me of "man in the high castle" or something.

my little grimey ilxor, he don't write or nuthin
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 13 March 2011 20:31 (fifteen years ago)
There's little or not distinction between a mixtape and an album in rap these days. Bastard is definitely an album, just a free one.
― Number None, Sunday, 13 March 2011 20:45 (fifteen years ago)
ehh it seems like there's lots of talk about mixtapes having a "tossed-off" quality a lot of times? idk
― thank you ilxor for starting this much needed thread (ilxor), Sunday, 13 March 2011 21:28 (fifteen years ago)
yeah, i was gonna say that bastard is an album. the link way up there that Ed put up is a mix of OFWGKTA stuff and it's a very good one.
― I just want to give a shout-out to Buzzy Beetles (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 13 March 2011 21:30 (fifteen years ago)
Well the tossed-off kind of mixtape still exists but then there's stuff like Trunk Muzik, K.R.I.T. Wuz Here etc. which is as musically and thematically cohesive as any album. Wasn't Flockavelli originally supposed to be a mixtape too? Bastard is an album, it just doesn't have a physical edition. This goes for EARL, Rolling Papers, and BlackenedWhite too.
― Number None, Sunday, 13 March 2011 21:36 (fifteen years ago)

okay so i listened to tyler creator 'bastard' front to back and it wasnt actively bad or boring but the overall vibe is basically eminem c. 1999 or something? like, "french" is his "just don't give a fuck" (look he can curse and make offensive jokes!!), "sarah" is his "kim" (look he hates women!!), "bastard"/"inglorious" are whichever of em's songs are about hating his parents (can't recall)... an hour of spitting and basically i learned a few things about tyler-
1. he hates his dad a lot2. he likes coke/weed/valium/etc. a lot3. he like to fuck/rape girls a lot4. he likes to kill girls occasionally5. he is not gay6. he doesn't like to go to school7. ???
i mean his delivery's kinda interesting i guess- 'distinctive', easy to listen to? and the beats were just kinda 'there'- sounded homemade, not bad, not great? that's really the best couple things i can say about the album. i'll wait for the debut on XL but hopefully dude will grow up a bit (jokes arent offensive, just dull as fuck) and let someone more talented help w/ the beats. of course then he'll probably be as boring as eminem c. 2004 and onward...

suddenly realizing how crucial it is that tyler gets dj holiday to host GOBLIN
― flopson, Monday, 14 March 2011 00:33 (fifteen years ago)
i still really like "yonkers" though, but sad to say nothing on 'bastard' comes close imo
― thank you ilxor for starting this much needed thread (ilxor), Monday, 14 March 2011 00:38 (fifteen years ago)
did you not hear AssMilk?
― Samuel (a hoy hoy), Monday, 14 March 2011 00:44 (fifteen years ago)
also EARL sounds more like Yonkers
― Samuel (a hoy hoy), Monday, 14 March 2011 00:45 (fifteen years ago)
yeah i heard it, the one w/ earl & tyler trading off, one of the better trax maybe? just looked up the lyrics and saw the "reincarnation of '98 eminem" line, hah. didn't catch that the first time around but earl otm
― thank you ilxor for starting this much needed thread (ilxor), Monday, 14 March 2011 01:00 (fifteen years ago)
tbf i don't see bastard as anywhere near the best ofwgkta tape. earl, blackendwhite and the dena tape, and the mike g now i think about it are better imo. still not listened to the jet age ones.
