fwiw feed the animals is 12 mins longer than night ripper

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

this is definitely more like his live shows-- samples laid out pretty plainly and played for longer, doesn't seem to have any moments as intricately built up to as the "say it aint so" solo moment on night ripper or even the "laffy taffy" one

in fact he's actually using a lot of the same rap vocals ("throw some d's", "hood nigga", "i get money", "my drink n my 2 step") as when i saw him probably 8 months ago which probably gives you a window into how long he's been working on this

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:45 (eighteen years ago)

and how uninteresting it sounds

deej, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

oh shit deej is really bringing it

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

but its not just rap songs from 2 years ago... its rap songs from 2 years ago over alt-rock from 6 years ago!!

and what, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

or even the "laffy taffy" one

I was thinking about this exact moment earlier this morning as the kind of thing I missed on the new album. But it also took me a few listens to Night Ripper for it to really gel with me -- in fact, what amazed me about the process of listening to that album over time is how parts that sounded dissonant at first suddenly began to seem like they'd always gone together and I could anticipate each transition.

jaymc, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

There's stuff from 2008 on here: "Sexy Can I," "Low," "Lollipop," etc.

jaymc, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

diggin in the crates

deej, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

is it lollipop over arcade fire or does he go real deep and put it over weezer

and what, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

That's not the point, though...? I mean, Girl Talk thinks of what he's doing as a tribute to pop music (he talked recently about all of the "wedding songs" on the new album), and one of the interesting things about listening to Girl Talk is how it recontextualizes songs that everyone already knows. If it was about finding the most obscure samples, it wouldn't have this effect.

jaymc, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

diggin in the 2004 iTunes folders

some dude, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

xxp It's "Under the Bridge," lol.

jaymc, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:00 (eighteen years ago)

ya criticizing girl talk of all people for using popular songs doesn't really hit the mark

s1ocki, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:00 (eighteen years ago)

my favorite tribute to pop music is the radio. when i move the dial, i can go from 'lollipop' to 'under the bridge' in like 5 seconds

jaymc, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

at least jaymcs arguments dont rely on the twin bastions of reasoning that are "because its fun" and "because youre old"

deej, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

the grandpa joke was a cheap shot i admit but you must admit, in turn, that you sounded like a comedy grandpa there.

s1ocki, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:09 (eighteen years ago)

haha yah it was a good zing

deej, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:10 (eighteen years ago)

red hot challopeppers

and what, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:10 (eighteen years ago)

i defly share reservations about this stuff and i had a similar show-going experience that felt like a weirdo senior prom with all these college kids swaying back and forth onstage with their cellphones out and shirtless girl talk dude saying "OK HEY GUYS..> GUYS..." over and over again. but at the same time i like it as an exercise in pushing my pop-memory/nostalgia buttons...

s1ocki, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:12 (eighteen years ago)

nostalgia for the pop radio sounds of 2008

deej, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

kind of!

s1ocki, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

you guys remember the days when "Sexy Can I" was all over the radio? those were good times

deej, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

jeff, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:15 (eighteen years ago)

though the stuff i found worked the best was like biggie over elton john or whatever

xp

s1ocki, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:15 (eighteen years ago)

deej, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:15 (eighteen years ago)

-- and what

^^^nice recontextualization

omar little, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:15 (eighteen years ago)

s1ocki, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:17 (eighteen years ago)

ilx was a lot better then

deej, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

lol lighten up old man, it's catchy

omar little, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

back in the days when memes were cool

s1ocki, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

it just sounds like one of those upbeat pop/lite-rock for your workday radio stations + a couple rap songs

add gorilla zoe and paul wall to this playlist http://b985.com/lsp/index.html & you could have the next highly anticipated girl talk LP

and what, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

madonna, prince, animotion, men at work, janet jackson, fergie... all recontextualized by wacky morning djs!!

and what, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

i guess youd also have to replace nickelback with clap your hands say yeah or something

and what, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

i like it as an exercise in pushing my pop-memory/nostalgia buttons...

Yes, definitely.

jaymc, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

the problem w/ this album i think is that it's kind of the album that haters like deej and ethan who know what he sounds like w/o really listening to him assume he makes, basically kitschy and in some ways obvious vocal samples over kitschy and in some ways obvious instrumental samples just laid out there for ppl to decide "this is a good idea" v. "this is not a good idea". there's no real build-up in these like there were on night ripper, and it's kind of nice but not as much fun. it sounds like his live shows do, it's just not as much fun when you are in your bedroom. i still like this a lot cuz it's like listening to the radio for an hour basically but it's def not on night ripper's level.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

apart from trying to figure out the songs he stole samples from this is boring.
also, the mashup thing extract itself already.

Zeno, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

i mean ethan isnt wrong in his zings, so i guess it comes down to whether or not you think girl talk has better ideas than most others and i do. the execution isn't there like it was imo but i dont see how anyone who liked night ripper could not at least like this too.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:28 (eighteen years ago)

i think part of the problem for me isnt that its bad cuz its all obvious, but because its obvious its really hard to discern any kind of personality in his selection skills ... like there's no track that really says anything about his own taste, its just all within the same formula of top 40 hip hop x indie x 80s pop we all know and love

there's nothing that genuinely feels like its from left field, the expectation is set up going in and then its fulfilled, completely and boringly

deej, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:30 (eighteen years ago)

I love the deejwhat assumption that Girl Talk is trying to make some high art here that needs to ascribe to some notion of cool or timeliness or cleverness. It's just making people freak out to dance music by taking all the best parts of songs that normal people like and squishing them together. It's exactly what a good DJ does in a 4 hour set, but in 45 minutes.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:31 (eighteen years ago)

the goal isn't to learn more about gregg gillis, the goal is to get people to dance to songs they already like

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

it just sounds like one of those upbeat pop/lite-rock for your workday radio stations + a couple rap songs

this is the first description of this that makes me want to hear it cause 1) I like lit-rock workday radio stations and 2) I like rap so what's not to like here

J0hn D., Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

i haven't heard the new album, btw

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

it bugs me on the same level as like people who buy "the most relaxing classical music album in the world... ever!" or something - in 2008 does anybody really need to buy a record by the dude from girl talk to bring lil wayne & red hot chili peppers to them?

and what, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

then why are we talking about gregg gillis xxp

deej, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

i guess like jordan admitted it comes down to whether you like the idea of girl talk or not... if you think girl talk dude is super radical then you'll go to him for your blondie + paul wall fix but if you think shit is really ugly & embarrassing youll just hit soulseek or listen to b98.5

and what, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

Gillis is just the peaks of Wayne and Keidis. People aren;t going to him to hear Wayne, they go to hear the best part of Wayne and maybe hear it in a different context and setting. You can't get bent if people have different listening habits than you.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:35 (eighteen years ago)

this is where i kind of agree w/ deej (long xxxp) wrt to feed the animals in particular, mostly because he seems to have purposefully cut down on his craftsmanship on this one, or more to the point he isn't working w/in his formula to create his own moments like he did on night ripper. i dont think the formula itself is the problem though.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:36 (eighteen years ago)

it bugs me on the same level as like people who buy "the most relaxing classical music album in the world... ever!"

yeah this could just be a symptom of me getting older & less bothered by shit 'cause those "relaxing classical" albums used to really annoy the shit out of me, I had all kinds of cranky objections to 'em, and now my position on 'em is "does it have good music on it? k good, pity about the lame title/cover but whatever," I can date this change to when somebody gave me like the lamest-looking "Chopin for Lovers" comp & I love Chopin so I was like "God fuck this" but then I listened and it was like "damn, quality Chopin mix dudes, can't front" you know?
