smoke ring's just a runner up?
― reggie (qualmsley), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 21:05 (fifteen years ago)
I'm warming up to it...
― Can you keep up? (Cheetah), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 21:07 (fifteen years ago)
ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS DUDE THO
― Can you keep up? (Cheetah), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 21:08 (fifteen years ago)
not feeling this new album... really same-y songs, no variation like on Square Shells, no weird little instrumentals, no big loud sounding stuff like "Freak Train" from CP, his voice sounds the same on every song with the same accent and inflections. Plus I think having what sounds like a consistent lineup throughout makes these tunes sound even more similar, which does not serve them well imo.
― sleeve, Thursday, 10 March 2011 20:47 (fifteen years ago)
Those are all completely valid points and pretty much why this isn't an "o_O OMG I love this album" album for me. But, having said that, I really do love the vibe, so even if it is kinda samey - its a great one.
― 'what are you, the Hymen Protection League of America?' (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 10 March 2011 21:32 (fifteen years ago)
Wish this album would had more of a "Freeway" vibe
― calstars, Friday, 18 March 2011 17:06 (fifteen years ago)
I mean where are the electric guitars?
― calstars, Friday, 18 March 2011 17:08 (fifteen years ago)
His voice sounds yards better when he projects
― calstars, Friday, 18 March 2011 17:09 (fifteen years ago)
this is a gorgeous album
― call all destroyer, Saturday, 19 March 2011 03:21 (fifteen years ago)
normally i would not like a dude who sings like this, but his writing for guitar is ridiculously good.
― call all destroyer, Saturday, 19 March 2011 03:22 (fifteen years ago)
liking this a lot, it's a grower
― dmr, Saturday, 19 March 2011 03:50 (fifteen years ago)
his sound is always so pretty & inviting imo but w/ this album i find myself aimlessly singing a bunch of the songs
― J0rdan S., Saturday, 19 March 2011 03:52 (fifteen years ago)
me too. like "jesus fever" isn't even one of my top three on the album but it runs thru my head
― dmr, Saturday, 19 March 2011 11:21 (fifteen years ago)
I loved Childhood Prodigy. Reading this thread and a few reviews, I'm guessing the new one is closer to Square Shells than CP. I'm alright with that but prefer his more freewheeling style.

― Ned Raggett, Saturday, 19 March 2011 16:50 (fifteen years ago)
bummer. i have tickets for friday night's show. hope he gets his stuff back together soon
― reggie (qualmsley), Saturday, 19 March 2011 16:57 (fifteen years ago)
does a Ned Raggett like Kurt Vile, or does he just follow random people's Twitters?
Vile doesn't seem like "Ned music" imo
― ilxor you've listened to one odd future album once (ilxor), Sunday, 20 March 2011 02:58 (fifteen years ago)
More of an RT in this case.
― Ned Raggett, Sunday, 20 March 2011 04:12 (fifteen years ago)
ah got it
suddenly it all makes sense & my life has been restored to balance & normalcy
― ilxor you've listened to one odd future album once (ilxor), Sunday, 20 March 2011 18:30 (fifteen years ago)
"Smoke Ring..." is a damn near perfect record, marred only by the out of place "puppet to the man." Three three plus minute outro on "Ghost Town" is a sheer wonder, esp. when that insect like guitar bubbles up in the mix.
No one does stoner observations like Vile.
― kwhitehead, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 15:26 (fifteen years ago)
"puppet" is great, fuiud
― ilxor you've listened to one odd future album once (ilxor), Tuesday, 22 March 2011 15:28 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, Puppet was the first track I got into on this.

― kwhitehead, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 15:35 (fifteen years ago)
hey it's each to his own.
― farielan chosder bout a chagh an i ballme trantuming (dog latin), Tuesday, 22 March 2011 17:08 (fifteen years ago)
This is obviously my problem, but I already have a tough enough time with "Kurt Vile," but "Smoke Ring For My Halo" on top of it has made it such that I cannot even bring myself to listen to his music.
― Clarke B., Tuesday, 14 June 2011 23:06 (fifteen years ago)
yr missin out i think!
― 69, Tuesday, 14 June 2011 23:09 (fifteen years ago)
it's his real name! what's he supposed to do?
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 14 June 2011 23:15 (fifteen years ago)
Totally missing out
― Forget the rest / this breast test is best (Ówen P.), Tuesday, 14 June 2011 23:15 (fifteen years ago)
pretty stupid reason not to listen to an album...
― skip, Tuesday, 14 June 2011 23:16 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, considering how terrible the names of so many things in my collection are... I'll give him a shot... "Ghost Town" is as good a place to start as any?
― Clarke B., Tuesday, 14 June 2011 23:42 (fifteen years ago)
just listen to the whole album!
― 69, Tuesday, 14 June 2011 23:48 (fifteen years ago)
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, June 14, 2011 4:15 PM (1 hour ago)
I find myself explaining that rather frequently.
― sleeve, Wednesday, 15 June 2011 00:39 (fourteen years ago)
That's perfect
― Number None, Wednesday, 15 June 2011 01:11 (fourteen years ago)
Good track! But the entire album, for real.
― Boehner & der club of GOP (Ówen P.), Wednesday, 15 June 2011 01:17 (fourteen years ago)
"clarke b."
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 15 June 2011 03:11 (fourteen years ago)
this album is great, and his stuff translates really well to a live setting (from what i can tell)
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 15 June 2011 03:12 (fourteen years ago)
it's his real name!
hard to believe
he's really good live. the quieter solo stuff especially. really intense.
― dmr, Wednesday, 15 June 2011 03:23 (fourteen years ago)
fuck, "baby's arms"
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 26 July 2011 05:35 (fourteen years ago)
I've listened to Smoke Ring more than any other new album this year, for sure.
― Trip Maker, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 05:49 (fourteen years ago)
the guitar playing is so distinctive
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 26 July 2011 05:51 (fourteen years ago)
listened to this on my way to work today
― dmr, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 16:29 (fourteen years ago)
such a beautiful/great album.
but god the live show was lifeless
― sean gramophone, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 16:33 (fourteen years ago)
I gave this a listen a few weeks back and liked it a lot... Thanks for the push!
― Clarke B., Tuesday, 26 July 2011 16:33 (fourteen years ago)
I had never heard that "Blackbery Song" posted above. Really beautiful (though I hate vocals in one headphone; always bums me out).
"Smoke Ring" is my favorite album of the year so far by a long shot. The only other thing I have of his is the "Hunchback" EP... I clearly need to pick some more of it up.
― She Got the Shakes, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 18:34 (fourteen years ago)
Promo copy of the new War On Drugs record is sounding nice--lining up even more neatly than expected with KV's sound on "Smoke Ring" (not a bad thing in and of itself, and no big surprise since these Philly fellows like Granduciel and Vile all seem to have bro'ed down long enough working on this particular hermetic style for a while now).
For example, one new War On Drugs song's riff is just like "On Tour", but in an upbeat shuffle...

smoke ring is great, got a sweet melancholic vibe to it

"In My Time"
― Trip Maker, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 17:42 (fourteen years ago)
album production is really well done too. nice electron bubbling underneath that never overwhelms.
