it is helpful to point out their use of the word "swag" as a way to underline the ways in their different from other young rappers

some dude, Wednesday, 2 March 2011 15:02 (fifteen years ago)

erm the ways in which they're different

some dude, Wednesday, 2 March 2011 15:03 (fifteen years ago)

i agree w/j0rdan that ILX is def at its worst when we're talking about how popular someone is or who likes it or who likes it for what reasons etc and not just talking about music

gr8080 sings the blues (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 16:20 (fifteen years ago)

i dunno i think people tend to get overly touchy about that topic for some reason

Rovi Wade (some dude), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 16:24 (fifteen years ago)

how popular artists are and what kind of audience they appeal to, i mean...the second guessing about why people like stuff does tend to get a bit tedious and self-serving

Rovi Wade (some dude), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 16:25 (fifteen years ago)

^this is maybe a better way of saying it

gr8080 sings the blues (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 16:26 (fifteen years ago)

MellowHype, composed of Hodgy Beats & Left Brain from Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, sign to Fat Possum for a hard release of Blackenedwhite which includes all the members of Odd Future including Tyler, The Creator who is releasing Goblin this spring. The album was originally featured on OFWGKTA's website back on Halloween and has since been remixed and remastered with bonus content for a physical release on CD and Vinyl this summer. Fat Possum began 20 years ago in North Mississippi and has released albums from Al Green, The Black Keys, R.L. Burnside, and many more.

Fat Possum!

bang-proof-bling-mans (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 17:08 (fifteen years ago)

heard some not-nice things about fat possum's business practices lately

gr8080 sings the blues (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 17:08 (fifteen years ago)

do tell.

bang-proof-bling-mans (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 17:10 (fifteen years ago)

basically a small very very cool label had invested a lot into wavves and could have potentially really broken thru with that band, and fat possum came in and poached them last minute thru some tactics that have left a bad taste in some ppls mouths...and i guess this sort tactic is p common for FP...not that it's anything new, but i think dude is sorta violating some unspoken honor shit within the community he came up in

Sorry I was late.

NYCNative, Wednesday, 2 March 2011 17:50 (fifteen years ago)

Why would you even enter a battle of words with me? That would be like me trying to battle you in copying-and-pasting emails about 1 hour ago via web

bang-proof-bling-mans (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 18:46 (fifteen years ago)

I enhanced it with an image and links. You set the trends, I improved upon them. Yeah, that's it.

NYCNative, Wednesday, 2 March 2011 18:59 (fifteen years ago)

^whiney /gorilla v bear twitterbeef reference if that wasn't clear.

bang-proof-bling-mans (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 18:59 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah I saw that hilarious beef last night. Kind of reminded me of when in junior high the kids at the nerds' table would get into a shouting match over the rules of Car Wars and the rest of the lunchroom would turn around, look to see where the commotion was coming from, and shrug before returning to their meals. (Full disclosure: I was one of those kids at the nerd table, usually not the one loudly arguing though.)

rendezvous then i'm through with HOOS (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 19:13 (fifteen years ago)

Aerosol, Wednesday, 2 March 2011 19:24 (fifteen years ago)

the reason why i don't like discussions on how actually popular a certain rapper or group is is because nothing ever gets resolved in a meaningful way & you don't really learn anything from those discussions -- usually it's the same old argument of "internet vs real world" w/ people bring anecdotes to the table that involve a sample size (i.e. two people) so small to be meaningless

i guess i just like to have statistics available in arguments like this & unfortunately when arguing about music popularity in 2011 we don't have many reliable metrics to go on, so i think the whole genre of discussion is exasperating

pop the s1ock (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 19:29 (fifteen years ago)

i mentioned this before on the wiz/curren$y thread, but the metrics I go by are live show turnout
and because i'm in nyc, that's the locale I go by

bang-proof-bling-mans (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 19:56 (fifteen years ago)

ticket sales are definitely underrated as a measure of an act's actual fanbase, but it can be a little skewed in NYC since there are a lot of acts that can sell out or play bigger venues than they play anywhere else besides maybe their hometown (and even sometimes not there)

Rovi Wade (some dude), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 19:58 (fifteen years ago)

the wiz/curren$y argument was different because we were comparing two acts -- that's different than a grasp about how actually popular one act is

pop the s1ock (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 19:59 (fifteen years ago)

yah, what I'm saying is "how many tix can an ofwgkta show sell in nyc right now" and while i imagine that would depend on who in the crew is playing, i would say they could do at least 600 at 15-25 a pop now, right?

bang-proof-bling-mans (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 20:00 (fifteen years ago)

^^^totally agree with this btw. these arguments always bore me. stick to the music, kids

ice cr?m's world of female people (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 20:00 (fifteen years ago)

fatbootycelinedion

everything coming from OFWGKTA will be dropped through a record label unless its its a mixtape.

pop the s1ock (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 22:23 (fifteen years ago)

when arguing about music popularity in 2011 we don't have many reliable metrics to go on, so i think the whole genre of discussion is exasperating

I would have thought we've got a shitload of reliable metrics w/ respect to music popularity in 2011, last fm charts for example

badg, Thursday, 3 March 2011 03:12 (fifteen years ago)

well, i think we have some reliable metrics & i do believe that youtube plays/last fm scrobbles etc are amongst some of the more reliable, but we still don't have tons of context w/ those

pop the s1ock (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 3 March 2011 03:14 (fifteen years ago)

that said the youtube play count for "yonkers" is something tangible i would point at to illustrate ofwgkta's growing popularity, if i was inclined to do such a thing

pop the s1ock (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 3 March 2011 03:14 (fifteen years ago)

if a motherfucka was so inclined

HOOStory is back. Fasten your steenbelts. (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Thursday, 3 March 2011 03:16 (fifteen years ago)
