does anyone even think OF has a serious chance of having radio hits or a real above ground mainstream presence?
idk at this point i think they've got a good shot at it.
on a related note i went back to eminem's "kim" today and...y'know i'm not actually sure i even like 99-03 era eminem any more. i think i used to think it was ~intense~ and ~daring~ but it's actually just really shit.
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 21:27 (fifteen years ago)
OF never was popular, will not be popular, and their comeback will be a great success

I look forward to hearing them at the November 2010 retro night at the club near my house.

fwiw i know a lot of typical college frat bros and a surprising number of them really, really like OF. like, post their videos on facebook and download all the mixtapes and shit.

guys did you hear about the REUNION TOUR

I feel vindicated

better comparison is prolly kool keith, but y'know I don't remember him hanging out w/ whatever the equivalent of the beib was back in '99

I spent a part of the last two days in high schools on Chicago's west side for work. I heard a lot of Waka and Gucci references, but sadly not a single Odd Future one.
― rendezvous then i'm through with HOOS (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 1 March 2011 21:32 (fifteen years ago)
obv they're popular and have a fanbase in some substantial and undeniable ways, but i thought by using a yardstick of The Clipse's earlier career (heavy rotation on radio, top 5 billboard debut) you guys would understand that i was referring to something besides "college kids download all the mixtapes and flock to their big club show" boutique sucess.

Was gonna say, it feels like the Earl album will be the one that never happens.
I'm oddly entranced by the Frank Ocean mixtape.

of course it'll happen. he can't be grounded forever.
― Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 1 March 2011 22:00 (fifteen years ago)
They remind me a lot more of the Def Jux crew/CanOx/etc. than Clipse in style and formation. Those acts would have seemed huge if music blogs/etc. had dominated in 2002-3 like now, the Fader covered them in the magazine about as much. Most of the music I've heard is good but even then seems a little re-tready of that sound.

the other day I went to the "Yonkers" video and the highest-rated comment, which I liked so much I copied it down for future reference, was:

I guess, but its kind of interesting to hear some real life examples outside of this bubble to how they're being perceived.

That is I'm with j0rdan, but for me at least it's not about a crest of popularity, just the fact that I have teenage family members who are just as fascinating as these strangersBut without the raps

"I thought that shit was swag!" says Tyler at Canter's, laughing between vicious bites of thick-cut bacon. Odd Future love bacon.

Like using the word "swag" to describe anything that fits their definition of cool, it's part of the group's eccentric aesthetic.
^^^^DEEPLY ECCENTRIC^^^^^

more and more though when i read this thread i'm glad that i was late to catch on to these guys so that I can not be jaded and tired of them until at least June
― bang-proof-bling-mans (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 14:57 (fifteen years ago)
it is helpful to point out their use of the word "swag" as a way to underline the ways in their different from other young rappers
― some dude, Wednesday, 2 March 2011 15:02 (fifteen years ago)
erm the ways in which they're different

i agree w/j0rdan that ILX is def at its worst when we're talking about how popular someone is or who likes it or who likes it for what reasons etc and not just talking about music
― gr8080 sings the blues (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 16:20 (fifteen years ago)

how popular artists are and what kind of audience they appeal to, i mean...the second guessing about why people like stuff does tend to get a bit tedious and self-serving

MellowHype, composed of Hodgy Beats & Left Brain from Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, sign to Fat Possum for a hard release of Blackenedwhite which includes all the members of Odd Future including Tyler, The Creator who is releasing Goblin this spring. The album was originally featured on OFWGKTA's website back on Halloween and has since been remixed and remastered with bonus content for a physical release on CD and Vinyl this summer. Fat Possum began 20 years ago in North Mississippi and has released albums from Al Green, The Black Keys, R.L. Burnside, and many more.
