there is something to the observation that the way he kind of leans into every curse word is a little i dunno...feels maybe unnatural or contrived to me, or at least more deliberate and conscious of the 'shock value' of those words than the way most rappers curse

some dude, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 04:11 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I was actually okay with that part, it was the unfavorable comparison to Sage Francis that kinda lost me.

Odd Future on Funny or Die

I'm not sure what to make of this. It's vaguely amusing, esp. the last 30 seconds or so, but isn't it too soon for them to be self-consciously lampooning their shtick? Hype cycles these days, I swear. Etc. *cue more hand-wringing*

Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill The Radio Star (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 1 March 2011 18:27 (fifteen years ago)

i'm kinda thinking of starting the thread for the inevitable backlash against odd future

Also, MellowHype sign to Fat Possum. This is sort of like Wu Tang signing to all the different majors, except OF are signing to record labels that otherwise put out Vampire Weekend and Tennis. Waiting for Earl to sign to Merge.

Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill The Radio Star (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 1 March 2011 19:09 (fifteen years ago)

i'm going to pretend they are signing to fat possum back when all they did was put out r.l. burnside and t-model ford records

gr8080 sings the blues (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 1 March 2011 19:10 (fifteen years ago)

I mean, can't knock the hustle. Just saying.

Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill The Radio Star (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 1 March 2011 19:10 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i don't care, i think merge would be a good label to sign with really, i mean they can obv get you into any store you need to get into, and i'm sure the deal is preferable to a major deal...also you get #superchunkswag

gr8080 sings the blues (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 1 March 2011 19:11 (fifteen years ago)

Kind of off-topic here, but the trajectory of Fat Possum has certainly been interesting over the past few years.

So this thread has been about awkward photo ops featuring Clipse and a white dude? Boy, was I reading it wrong.

Clipse is a bad analogy since they had hit songs and a gold record before becoming kind of a internet crit nerd cause célèbre in the absence of continued commercial success. does anyone even think OF has a serious chance of having radio hits or a real above ground mainstream presence?

some dude, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 21:09 (fifteen years ago)

Gotta wait until they attempt to get people to pay for their music, I guess.

that's not funny. (unperson), Tuesday, 1 March 2011 21:13 (fifteen years ago)

there is no mainstream

ice cr?m's world of female people (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 1 March 2011 21:14 (fifteen years ago)

I thought the xx would never get out of a post-goth collegiate ghetto but they ended up on target endcaps and the olympics so what do I know

I love priest but I've chosen maiden (Edward III), Tuesday, 1 March 2011 21:15 (fifteen years ago)

there is no mainstream

This is true. But there are people who like hip-hop without obsessing over it on ILM and blogs. Those people are as yet mostly unaware of Odd Future.

that's not funny. (unperson), Tuesday, 1 March 2011 21:18 (fifteen years ago)

Earl's record will be huge.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 1 March 2011 21:19 (fifteen years ago)

Beiber collab will change all that lol

xp

eagerly awaiting the comeback album

ice cr?m's world of female people (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 1 March 2011 21:24 (fifteen years ago)

does anyone even think OF has a serious chance of having radio hits or a real above ground mainstream presence?

idk at this point i think they've got a good shot at it.

on a related note i went back to eminem's "kim" today and...y'know i'm not actually sure i even like 99-03 era eminem any more. i think i used to think it was ~intense~ and ~daring~ but it's actually just really shit.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 21:27 (fifteen years ago)

OF never was popular, will not be popular, and their comeback will be a great success

I love priest but I've chosen maiden (Edward III), Tuesday, 1 March 2011 21:27 (fifteen years ago)

I look forward to hearing them at the November 2010 retro night at the club near my house.

rendezvous then i'm through with HOOS (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 1 March 2011 21:28 (fifteen years ago)

fwiw i know a lot of typical college frat bros and a surprising number of them really, really like OF. like, post their videos on facebook and download all the mixtapes and shit.

cyclops eyes over here (patsy), Tuesday, 1 March 2011 21:30 (fifteen years ago)

guys did you hear about the REUNION TOUR

i think i used to think it was ~intense~ and ~daring~ but it's actually just really shit.

I feel vindicated

ice cr?m's world of female people (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 1 March 2011 21:31 (fifteen years ago)

better comparison is prolly kool keith, but y'know I don't remember him hanging out w/ whatever the equivalent of the beib was back in '99

I love priest but I've chosen maiden (Edward III), Tuesday, 1 March 2011 21:32 (fifteen years ago)

I spent a part of the last two days in high schools on Chicago's west side for work. I heard a lot of Waka and Gucci references, but sadly not a single Odd Future one.

rendezvous then i'm through with HOOS (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 1 March 2011 21:32 (fifteen years ago)

obv they're popular and have a fanbase in some substantial and undeniable ways, but i thought by using a yardstick of The Clipse's earlier career (heavy rotation on radio, top 5 billboard debut) you guys would understand that i was referring to something besides "college kids download all the mixtapes and flock to their big club show" boutique sucess.

some dude, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 21:41 (fifteen years ago)

Earl's record will be huge.

Was gonna say, it feels like the Earl album will be the one that never happens.

I'm oddly entranced by the Frank Ocean mixtape.

of course it'll happen. he can't be grounded forever.
