Interesting split on Singles Jukebox, but I feel like some of these are missing the point a little:
Zach Lyon: This is the first Odd Future-related track I’ve listened to and… is this it? All this controversy culminates in some ASS FUCK kid FUCKing emphasizing every DAMN curse word like SHIT emotional problems BITCHes wolf COCK gang BITCH we’re on the internet CUNT etc, and stabbing Bruno Mars in his GODDAMN esophagus is as subversive as it gets? I can’t find a reason not to just listen to, say, “Damage” by Non-Prophets instead. Yes, it’s almost as intense as the side project Sage Francis did to prove he wasn’t a pussy.[2]

Josh Langhoff: Shocking! An outrage! He goes too far, debases all that we cherish! EVERYBODY KNOWS TRICERATOPS WAS MONOGAMOUS![1]
lol
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 04:08 (fifteen years ago)
there is something to the observation that the way he kind of leans into every curse word is a little i dunno...feels maybe unnatural or contrived to me, or at least more deliberate and conscious of the 'shock value' of those words than the way most rappers curse
― some dude, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 04:11 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, I was actually okay with that part, it was the unfavorable comparison to Sage Francis that kinda lost me.

Odd Future on Funny or Die
I'm not sure what to make of this. It's vaguely amusing, esp. the last 30 seconds or so, but isn't it too soon for them to be self-consciously lampooning their shtick? Hype cycles these days, I swear. Etc. *cue more hand-wringing*

Also, MellowHype sign to Fat Possum. This is sort of like Wu Tang signing to all the different majors, except OF are signing to record labels that otherwise put out Vampire Weekend and Tennis. Waiting for Earl to sign to Merge.
― Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill The Radio Star (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 1 March 2011 19:09 (fifteen years ago)
i'm going to pretend they are signing to fat possum back when all they did was put out r.l. burnside and t-model ford records
― gr8080 sings the blues (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 1 March 2011 19:10 (fifteen years ago)

― Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill The Radio Star (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 1 March 2011 19:10 (fifteen years ago)
yeah i don't care, i think merge would be a good label to sign with really, i mean they can obv get you into any store you need to get into, and i'm sure the deal is preferable to a major deal...also you get #superchunkswag
― gr8080 sings the blues (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 1 March 2011 19:11 (fifteen years ago)
Kind of off-topic here, but the trajectory of Fat Possum has certainly been interesting over the past few years.

Clipse is a bad analogy since they had hit songs and a gold record before becoming kind of a internet crit nerd cause célèbre in the absence of continued commercial success. does anyone even think OF has a serious chance of having radio hits or a real above ground mainstream presence?
― some dude, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 21:09 (fifteen years ago)
Gotta wait until they attempt to get people to pay for their music, I guess.

I thought the xx would never get out of a post-goth collegiate ghetto but they ended up on target endcaps and the olympics so what do I know
― I love priest but I've chosen maiden (Edward III), Tuesday, 1 March 2011 21:15 (fifteen years ago)
This is true. But there are people who like hip-hop without obsessing over it on ILM and blogs. Those people are as yet mostly unaware of Odd Future.

idk at this point i think they've got a good shot at it.
on a related note i went back to eminem's "kim" today and...y'know i'm not actually sure i even like 99-03 era eminem any more. i think i used to think it was ~intense~ and ~daring~ but it's actually just really shit.
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 21:27 (fifteen years ago)
