The inevitable 'Womanizer' cover

James Mitchell, Sunday, 14 December 2008 02:58 (seventeen years ago)

two weeks pass...

La Lily singing "The Lady is a Tramp" on Jools Holland's New Year's Eve show was mortifyingly revealing of her limitations. I have no idea whose idea it was for her to sing that but her breathy thing just doesn't work with a song like that, which asks for brassiness, pipes, power and sass. She was like a little girl playing dress up. Really embarrassing.

"LILY ALLEN STATEMENT

During an interview with The Word magazine Lily Allen was asked about the lyrics of a song on her album called "Everyone's At It". The song's subject matter concerns drug use. In her answer she replied that she "had no statement to make, I just wish people wouldn't sensationalise this thing that just exists". At no point does she say that drugs are a good thing or that she condones drug use; in fact she says that "I can spot the signs (of people on drugs) and it terrifies me". The song itself talks about a culture of both legally prescribed drugs like anti-depressants and also illegal drug use.

Lily Allen would like to state unequivocally that she does not condone illegal drug use and has every sympathy with individuals and families whose lives have been blighted by drugs.
"

how obvious is it that the record label bosses have called the girl in for a bollocking, or that she is worried they will.

mark e, Thursday, 8 January 2009 12:58 (seventeen years ago)

It would be hard to believe that this is coming from the record label, since they're releasing the whole controversy-courting record in the first place.

i don't want to pick on you for being an idiot but we can't do that on 77.

how bad must her other lines be for this to be a favourite line?

How about this?

"I can ask you things I can't ask anyone
And you'll give me direction
Apart from me, you're the only other person I know
Who reads the travel section"

everything, Monday, 2 February 2009 22:28 (seventeen years ago)

XP I think your acting like a dick is a lot less charming than you think it is.

Mordy, Monday, 2 February 2009 23:06 (seventeen years ago)

no trying to charm ya, mordy.

anyway you're not alone, there are a lot of people who profess to like this shit.

this quietus piece reminds me how bad music journalists are at writing about music. in this entire review the only reference he makes to the, well, music is:

"Sometimes she's not getting enough juice out of her backing tracks (more Pet Shop Boys-ey this time around)"

thanking you.

display name fatigue (special guest stars mark bronson), Tuesday, 3 February 2009 11:32 (seventeen years ago)

so, the question is, has greg kirsten saved his best stuff for the new (and excellent) 'the bird and the bee' album ?

mark e, Tuesday, 3 February 2009 11:47 (seventeen years ago)

if it really is excellent then probably

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Tuesday, 3 February 2009 12:31 (seventeen years ago)

You can imagine Flight of the Conchords doing many of these lyrics. "Everyone's At It" is pretty close to a 100% Conchords song, though:

Bret: So you’ve got a prescription and that makes it legal? / I find your excuses overwhelmingly feeble

Jemaine: So your daughter’s depressed — we’ll get her straight on the Prozac / But little do you know, she already takes crack

dabug, Tuesday, 3 February 2009 15:47 (seventeen years ago)

So if these lyrics are supposed to be funny you approve of them?

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Tom D.), Tuesday, 3 February 2009 15:50 (seventeen years ago)

never a big fan of comedy music but if this were comedy, those lyrics would be funny.

display name fatigue (special guest stars mark bronson), Tuesday, 3 February 2009 15:51 (seventeen years ago)

given MGMT's recent success i believe theres a big market for concords knock offs

straightola, Tuesday, 3 February 2009 15:52 (seventeen years ago)

They're not supposed to be funny. Conchords are usually funny because you're laughing at them, not with them. (I mean, you're laughing with the performers, but not the characters.)

dabug, Tuesday, 3 February 2009 15:53 (seventeen years ago)

"Chinese" from her new album is so lovely. :)

Lily Allen - This summers biggest quit?

Mark G, Friday, 25 September 2009 07:03 (sixteen years ago)

My guess? She's run out of things to write about.

Good on her if that's why (really). More should do that for that reason.

Mark G, Friday, 25 September 2009 07:04 (sixteen years ago)

As someone who is actually making good coin out of it, I doubt she's going to quit the music business just yet. Maybe after the next album bombs.

everything, Friday, 25 September 2009 07:42 (sixteen years ago)

"quits" music

did think she'd taken it up, tbh (right? right?)

history mayne, Friday, 25 September 2009 08:53 (sixteen years ago)

The blog she's set up to promote paying for music is really cack-handed e.g. posting URLs but not actually making them work. Some interesting statements from a variety of artists tho - most of the argument revolves around artist rights vs consumer rights and their supposed diametric opposition as i see it - in that you read Tinchy or whoever's mostly reasonable (tho often naive or vague) comments and then dozens of posts from anon wankers saying things like "what's the problem you make all the money from touring, merch etc." as if paying for the music shouldn't even be an option.

modescalator (blueski), Friday, 25 September 2009 10:27 (sixteen years ago)

she only got her break because she has a famous dad. The one thing this over-privileged kid should quit doing is whining.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 25 September 2009 11:52 (sixteen years ago)

she. is. awesome. thank ye kindly.

Um, Lily Allen got famous because of all the free downloads she offered!

(see top of thread for history)

Mark G, Friday, 25 September 2009 12:32 (sixteen years ago)

as per the article linked :

She also wrote on her blog: "I made those mixtapes 5 years ago, I didn't have a knowledge of the workings of the music industry back then."
