ODD FUTURE WOLF GANG KILL THEM ALL

Also the same folks complaining about Odd Future don't have much of a problem (if any at all) with, say, Cannibal Corpse. If Odd Future went so far as to actually call a song "Stripped, Raped and Strangled" or "Fucked With a Knife" we'd be reading Voice editorials all goddamn year, but somehow when married, middle-aged white men do it (and have been doing it for ~20 years) it's ignorable, even though I think it's a fair assumption that skateboarding teenagers listen to Odd Future and Cannibal Corpse.

Note: I don't have a problem with either group. Or rape jokes, as we all know.

that's not funny. (unperson), Friday, 25 February 2011 21:57 (fifteen years ago)

Her dad admonished her: "They talk about some crazy shit and as a female, you're slapping a lot of women in the face."

I'm like, "That's what I do. I slap bitches."

lololololol

Were ILM people this squicky about Eminem's rape and murder songs back in 2001-2003?

ILM back then did some serious pants-wetting over how awesome Eminem was back then

I always hated him, barring a couple singles

ice cr?m's world of female people (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 25 February 2011 22:06 (fifteen years ago)

I found eminem really repellent back in the day too

it made me wish batman had written an article on mfas (Edward III), Friday, 25 February 2011 22:07 (fifteen years ago)

my problem with eminem was that he wanted to be taken seriously.

ice cr?m's world of female people (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 25 February 2011 22:09 (fifteen years ago)

like he was really emo in a way that Odd Future are not imho

ice cr?m's world of female people (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 25 February 2011 22:09 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, eminem was always putting off this I don't give a fuck vibe

but he gave a fuck

I could tell

it made me wish batman had written an article on mfas (Edward III), Friday, 25 February 2011 22:12 (fifteen years ago)

there was a whole subtext to Eminem that you were supposed to care about his trials with his mom, his wife, his kid, that he had FEELINGS and he was MESSED UP and O THA TRAGEDY btw here's some rape jokes and fags are lame

the juxtaposition was actively irritating to me

ice cr?m's world of female people (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 25 February 2011 22:14 (fifteen years ago)

Well, wasn't really trying to swing this into a discussion about Eminem's relative merits, I was just wondering if there were many people on ILM straight up dismissing him because of the misogyny and violence.

mostly people complained about his whiny voice

ice cr?m's world of female people (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 25 February 2011 22:27 (fifteen years ago)

i think tyler is v v emo!!!

gr8080, Friday, 25 February 2011 22:38 (fifteen years ago)

cannibal corpse got a lot of controversy back when they came out, tons of death metal stuff did!

so did eminem, everyone was handwringing about him!

jon/via i think you are kinda monday morning quarterbacking here.

also, i reject the idea that it's somehow wrong to have a prob with some of the stuff that oddfuture says.

And now everyone's bored with the subject? Or used to it? So we should wait out whichever critics have decided once again to get shocked and horrified by lyrical content, even though artists they're no longer paying attention to have been saying all this exact same shit for decades?

that's not funny. (unperson), Saturday, 26 February 2011 01:52 (fifteen years ago)

A month earlier and Bieber's remix album could have had a Tyler feature.

Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill The Radio Star (Alex in Montreal), Saturday, 26 February 2011 03:46 (fifteen years ago)

was it tyler or hodgy who rapped about killing bieber?

gr8080, Saturday, 26 February 2011 03:48 (fifteen years ago)

Tyler has a mad boycrush on Bieber. But it also might have been Tyler who dropped the Bieber line.

need to be quite careful posting on a thread where people have hard knowledge and fully worked opinions based on that, because i don't, but hell, I'm drinking.

I really really like the stuff I've heard. I don't get people saying the stuff's just goofing around trying to offend - it seems full of depression, obsessed in more than one song about suicide. the rape/faggot stuff is repulsive but feels like a heavy portrayal of a dark psyche - the more absurdly nasty it is in some ways the better because it's less realistic. feels ballardian in some ways.

so the whole suicide/depression schtick feels like the pay-off. there's nothing rewarding in the pose- it's nasty and will kill you.

The cumbersome, peristaltic flow really contributes to that - like people struggling to spurt the words out.

think it's great.

And Diddy bought him a chain? Does he just do that with everyone? That totes explains how hip-hop can still be 'bling' in an age where no-one sells any records - Biggie is paying for it.

Interesting split on Singles Jukebox, but I feel like some of these are missing the point a little:

Zach Lyon: This is the first Odd Future-related track I’ve listened to and… is this it? All this controversy culminates in some ASS FUCK kid FUCKing emphasizing every DAMN curse word like SHIT emotional problems BITCHes wolf COCK gang BITCH we’re on the internet CUNT etc, and stabbing Bruno Mars in his GODDAMN esophagus is as subversive as it gets? I can’t find a reason not to just listen to, say, “Damage” by Non-Prophets instead. Yes, it’s almost as intense as the side project Sage Francis did to prove he wasn’t a pussy.

there is something to the observation that the way he kind of leans into every curse word is a little i dunno...feels maybe unnatural or contrived to me, or at least more deliberate and conscious of the 'shock value' of those words than the way most rappers curse

some dude, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 04:11 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I was actually okay with that part, it was the unfavorable comparison to Sage Francis that kinda lost me.

Odd Future on Funny or Die

I'm not sure what to make of this. It's vaguely amusing, esp. the last 30 seconds or so, but isn't it too soon for them to be self-consciously lampooning their shtick? Hype cycles these days, I swear. Etc. *cue more hand-wringing*
