he do the waka lyfe (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 24 February 2011 18:43 (fifteen years ago)

he's probably one of the best internet punchlines ever -- also i think he had one of the fakest major label deals ever? like, he put out his album for free & then it was going to go in stores for real, to purchase -- and they said all of this ahead of time instead of it happening as a reaction to a specific event

pop the s1ock (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 24 February 2011 18:44 (fifteen years ago)

he was kinda like if dookie from the wire grew up to be a rapper, but minus any of the self-awareness

pop the s1ock (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 24 February 2011 18:44 (fifteen years ago)

i did like that "brooklyn girls" song tho

he do the waka lyfe (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 24 February 2011 18:46 (fifteen years ago)

yeah that was a joint, i agree

pop the s1ock (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 24 February 2011 18:46 (fifteen years ago)

i agree with all these charles hamilton posts!

bang-proof-bling-mans (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 24 February 2011 22:18 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, couldn't even remotely f/w that dude even if he wasn't a cornball, just cause he has the worst voice ever.

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Thursday, 24 February 2011 23:33 (fifteen years ago)

i dunno if it's just his actual voice or the way it's been recorded or compressed or whatever, but it almost hurts my ears.

http://i56.tinypic.com/xnsu1g.gif (max arrrrrgh), Thursday, 24 February 2011 23:38 (fifteen years ago)

It's his voice. He's just as annoying on that video where he got punched.

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Thursday, 24 February 2011 23:44 (fifteen years ago)

that flow on "brooklyn girls" - "NEER EER EER EER ERRR, NEER EER EER EER ERRR, NEER EER EER EER ERRR, ERR ERR ERR"

ow my brane

it made me wish batman had written an article on mfas (Edward III), Friday, 25 February 2011 03:36 (fifteen years ago)

as recently as a couple years ago Loder still did articles on the MTV site but generally only movie reviews -- haven't seen anything by him recently to know whether he's still there at all though

Dr. Frogbius (some dude), Friday, 25 February 2011 03:37 (fifteen years ago)

ok it wasnt kurt loder

"With so many now patently aware of the “Golf Wang hooligans” along with heavy cosigns from production wizard Flying Lotus to rapper Mos Def, more fans are still trying to figure out if this mix of violent imagery, shocking but razor sharp lyrics and trunk rattling beats from Odd Future will ever make its way to the mainstream. "

dmr, Friday, 25 February 2011 04:23 (fifteen years ago)

I wonders if they will make it to the mainstream

So I just showed my wife the "Yonkers" video and I think she is a little upset with me now.

rendezvous then i'm through with HOOS (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 25 February 2011 05:20 (fifteen years ago)

did you explain to her that he doesn't really eat the cockroach

on some outer space shit (bernard snowy), Friday, 25 February 2011 11:56 (fifteen years ago)

I liked Syd's line in the MTV bit.

Number None, Friday, 25 February 2011 12:47 (fifteen years ago)

^^^

When I first started really fucking with Odd Future heavy, my dad was like, "Really? They talk about some crazy shit and as a female, you're slapping a lot of women in the face."

I'm like, "That's what I do. I slap bitches."

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Friday, 25 February 2011 18:48 (fifteen years ago)

did you explain to her that he doesn't really rape chicks

in odd we trust (cozen), Friday, 25 February 2011 18:55 (fifteen years ago)

your dad is female?

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Friday, 25 February 2011 18:57 (fifteen years ago)

he doesn't really rape chicks?

bang-proof-bling-mans (forksclovetofu), Friday, 25 February 2011 19:02 (fifteen years ago)

Having only heard Yonkers, it seems like he has a really similar flow to Aesop Rock in a couple of different ways.
I'm sure it's covered extensively in the 2000 posts here, but the "faggot"s are kind of a dealbreaker for me - I dug the song a lot otherwise.

She Got the Shakes, Friday, 25 February 2011 19:02 (fifteen years ago)

yup, sounds like aesop rock but misogynistic/homophobic/violent/etc., totally otm. i'll pull out my old copies of Labor Days, Float and Bazooka Tooth and be perfectly content w/ that, thank u

Damn this thread seems so....different without ilxor (ilxor), Friday, 25 February 2011 19:13 (fifteen years ago)

yonkers vid is great btw admittedly

Damn this thread seems so....different without ilxor (ilxor), Friday, 25 February 2011 19:13 (fifteen years ago)

he doesn't sound like aes rock to me at all. more locked into the beat, less sardonic. i think he compares better to 90s nyc underground dudes. i'm struggling to think of exactly who though

ciderpress, Friday, 25 February 2011 19:26 (fifteen years ago)

He's pretty sardonic. Except for when he isn't.

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Friday, 25 February 2011 19:30 (fifteen years ago)

the only thing from yonkers that i could imagine in an aesop rock song is the stevie wonder couplet

ciderpress, Friday, 25 February 2011 19:32 (fifteen years ago)

He sounds like Rock from Heltah Skeltah

mikethegrouch, Friday, 25 February 2011 20:16 (fifteen years ago)

Oh and these guys are great.

mikethegrouch, Friday, 25 February 2011 20:16 (fifteen years ago)

stoked for these guys but rape jokes keep me from going back to listen more than once

hope they can stay rad but grow up a little too

gr8080, Friday, 25 February 2011 21:43 (fifteen years ago)

Were ILM people this squicky about Eminem's rape and murder songs back in 2001-2003? Or is it okay to hear that from a cartoonish white guy but not from black teenagers?

Sort of being snarky here, but I have several irl friends that are all dismissive and refusing to listen to Golf Wang, specifically citing the misogyny and violence; but these dudes never batted an eyebrow at the same stuf from Marshall Mathers. I hate to bring in race here, but, man, its kind of hard not to think about it.

Also the same folks complaining about Odd Future don't have much of a problem (if any at all) with, say, Cannibal Corpse. If Odd Future went so far as to actually call a song "Stripped, Raped and Strangled" or "Fucked With a Knife" we'd be reading Voice editorials all goddamn year, but somehow when married, middle-aged white men do it (and have been doing it for ~20 years) it's ignorable, even though I think it's a fair assumption that skateboarding teenagers listen to Odd Future and Cannibal Corpse.

Note: I don't have a problem with either group. Or rape jokes, as we all know.

that's not funny. (unperson), Friday, 25 February 2011 21:57 (fifteen years ago)

Her dad admonished her: "They talk about some crazy shit and as a female, you're slapping a lot of women in the face."

I'm like, "That's what I do. I slap bitches."

lololololol

Were ILM people this squicky about Eminem's rape and murder songs back in 2001-2003?

ILM back then did some serious pants-wetting over how awesome Eminem was back then

I always hated him, barring a couple singles

ice cr?m's world of female people (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 25 February 2011 22:06 (fifteen years ago)

I found eminem really repellent back in the day too

it made me wish batman had written an article on mfas (Edward III), Friday, 25 February 2011 22:07 (fifteen years ago)

my problem with eminem was that he wanted to be taken seriously.

ice cr?m's world of female people (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 25 February 2011 22:09 (fifteen years ago)

like he was really emo in a way that Odd Future are not imho

ice cr?m's world of female people (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 25 February 2011 22:09 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, eminem was always putting off this I don't give a fuck vibe

but he gave a fuck

I could tell

it made me wish batman had written an article on mfas (Edward III), Friday, 25 February 2011 22:12 (fifteen years ago)

there was a whole subtext to Eminem that you were supposed to care about his trials with his mom, his wife, his kid, that he had FEELINGS and he was MESSED UP and O THA TRAGEDY btw here's some rape jokes and fags are lame

the juxtaposition was actively irritating to me

ice cr?m's world of female people (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 25 February 2011 22:14 (fifteen years ago)

Well, wasn't really trying to swing this into a discussion about Eminem's relative merits, I was just wondering if there were many people on ILM straight up dismissing him because of the misogyny and violence.

rendezvous then i'm through with HOOS (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 25 February 2011 22:19 (fifteen years ago)

mostly people complained about his whiny voice

ice cr?m's world of female people (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 25 February 2011 22:27 (fifteen years ago)
