Totally fuck it.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 30 January 2004 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Sebadoh, Harmacy - remove all Jason Lowenstein songs save "Prince-S" (sorry, Jake)

morris pavilion (samjeff), Friday, 30 January 2004 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

"Loaded" is hardly an "average" LP! All those songs you cross out are great! (To the VU guy.)
I disagree -- The Loaded edit is otm. My life is no different had those five songs never existed.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 30 January 2004 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

okay i think that fixed it?

j fail (cenotaph), Friday, 30 January 2004 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

be gone this only keeps getting better!

please repost the brighten the corners one so i can argue with it properly.

andrew s (andrew s), Friday, 30 January 2004 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

okay, lemme try that again:

Pavement - Shorten the Corners

1. Stereo (Malkmus) - 3:07
2. Shady Lane - 3:50
3. Transport Is Arranged - 3:52
4. Date With Ikea - 2:39
5. Old to Begin - 3:22

6. Type Slowly - 5:20
7. Embassy Row - 3:51
8. Blue Hawaiian - 3:33
9. We Are Underused - 4:12
10. Passat Dream - 3:51
11. Starlings of the Slipstream - 3:08

12. Fin - 5:24

j fail (cenotaph), Friday, 30 January 2004 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree with the previous Brighten The Corners strikes as they stand, mistake or not.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 30 January 2004 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

(Granted, empty EPs are a hard sell)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 30 January 2004 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

actually in a really cyncal mode i would reduce brighten the corners to a cassingle: "blue hawaiian"/"fin". why i chose "we are underused" over "starlings of the slipstream" above is beyond me - it's a coin toss. same w/"transport" over "old to begin".

j fail (cenotaph), Friday, 30 January 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe i could reduce pavement the same way:

Steve Malkmus
Spiral Stairs
Bob Nastanovich
Mark Ibold
Gary Young/Steve West

... but that is just getting rude....

j fail (cenotaph), Friday, 30 January 2004 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, j, the eventual The thread where you turn an average band into an amazing solo artist by removing most of the members thread is coming very soon, surely

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 30 January 2004 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

(Although that still wouldn't help Pavement.)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 30 January 2004 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I think we've done that thread, actually.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 30 January 2004 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 30 January 2004 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm just being cynical - i love pavement and they could not exist without spiral stairs. i just don't like any of the songs he ever wrote (cause he basically only wrote 1 and kept repeating it).
or do you think that brighten the corners is essential and every track must remain?

j fail (cenotaph), Friday, 30 January 2004 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

on second thought, that's all much too funny to argue with. but yes i do love all of brighten the corners. it does get kind of longish though, so i might just split in half and have two fabulous eps, that way everyone's happy?

Jay Farrar - Terroir Blues

1. No Rolling Back
2. Space Junk I
3. Hard Is The Fall
4. Fool King's Crown
5. Space Junk II

I am arguing that I love every song on Brighten The Corners, and I wouldn't remove any of them. I am especially arguing in favor of "Stereo," which is one of Pavement's signature songs.

I'd also argue that you're mostly right about Spiral, but his two songs on BTC were actually the exception to the rule for him - they aren't much like his typical songs at all.

Go Junior, Go Senior
Rhythm Bandits

(haha mine isn't EP length but still)

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 30 January 2004 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

to me, 'stereo' pushed pavement pretty dangerously close to novelty territory - while i loved the song in 1997, these days i always skip it. but that's just my opinion.

i had a friend who did this weird social experiment... for a few weeks whenever he was discussing anything with anyone he always added "but that's just my opinion, so i'm not necessarily right." he found that people would get more agitated when he said that, and try to argue their opinions even more forcefully at him....

j fail (cenotaph), Friday, 30 January 2004 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

J Fail, do you listen to live Pavement much? Maybe you'd feel better about that song if you did. That song was much better live than on the record, and was a staple of their live show for half of their career.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 30 January 2004 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, i do. i don't hate that song, and i realize what a staple it is, so i almost didn't delete it... but being a fascist is half the fun of this thread!!

john f (cenotaph), Friday, 30 January 2004 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

If I was going to remove any song from BTC, it'd be "Shady Lane."

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 30 January 2004 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

you're right- that's gotta go too!

john f (cenotaph), Friday, 30 January 2004 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

What's the problem with "Old To Begin," by the way? That's probably my favorite on the album, along with "Transport Is Arranged."

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 30 January 2004 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Arab Strap -- Monday at the Hug and Pint

1. The Shy Retirer

Or alternately, just axe the first half and take tracks 7-13. They flow really well, but the first half of the album is a mess.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 30 January 2004 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

there is nothing memorable about it to me. it's pleasant but ultimately forgettable.

I FEEL LIKE I AM BEING ATTACKED. can't someone defend "Radio song" instead??

I think Swans - Children of God would make an excellent LP if you the last six tracks on the album.

Ian Moraine (Eastern Mantra), Sunday, 21 November 2004 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

remove the last six tracks^

Ian Moraine (Eastern Mantra), Sunday, 21 November 2004 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Most of the CDs released nowadays would be excellent EP with everything but the first 4-5 tracks removed.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 21 November 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Can someone do this for Speakerboxx/The Love Below, so I could burn it on one disc/not have to skip tracks? Thanks.
