cannot abide Florence et al but that's partly down to mistakenly reading three lines of an interview with her and partly cos I really dislike the song "You've Got the Love" and y'know they made a dirge dirgier. wd probably rep for that one Enemy single above everything on here but the Rakes' first album is decent fun too.

The old skool mix with the breakbeats and the strings and piano breakdown is glorious. Florence's version is clearly and vastly inferior.

Hmm, best on the list? Probably Keane, might have been Athlete if their other albums were as good as Beyond The Neighbourhood, might have been The Futureheads if they'd stopped after the first album.

Think it's Magic Numbers for me - wouldn't listen to them on purpose, but their songs are pleasant and they're refreshingly non-posey.

My dad was part of the last year of National service in the UK (1960 I think), and was based in South Wales. From the way he tells it he split the time 50/50 with raining artillery shells on hillsides and getting pissed. On one occasion he went to a favourite local pub with his pal "Scouse" Robinson, who was wearing a new alpen style hat with a feather in it. On entering the packed bar, the landlady spotted them and bellowed across the room:
