Like, Kaiser Chiefs and The Feeling are both among the best new UK bands of the past 5-10 years or so. Athlete also had their moments.

Tragically, this may be true.
They're still crap though.

It used to be but not anymore. But hatred of britpop and its successors pulls everyone together in times of need

every time I see this thread I think it is going to be an actual discussion about a landfill in particular or landfills in general. I open it, see that it is not, and leave.

The bands are characterised by a softer, less aggressive sound than earlier bands (compare with The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys

landfill indie is new wave to britpops punk?
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 20 February 2011 17:58 (fifteen years ago)
not really. this stuff is from squiggly line almost a decade later squiggly line.

true
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 20 February 2011 18:08 (fifteen years ago)
i definitely remember it being labelled Britpop 2.0 though.
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 20 February 2011 18:09 (fifteen years ago)
well yeah it's fair enough for the kaiser chiefs and the ordinary boys especially, but there was a bigger gap between them in time is all, and while in the grand scheme of things both this stuff and britpop was basically two variations on 'unimaginative guitar pop', the discourse changed around it? idk, it wasn't a watered down version of britpop in the way new wave was (they tell us) of punk.
― for all the fucked-up children of this world we give you 1p3 (history mayne), Sunday, 20 February 2011 18:13 (fifteen years ago)
yeah I know what you're saying and I don't disagree with you.
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 20 February 2011 18:15 (fifteen years ago)
Arguably, I'd say Kaiser Chiefs and The Kooks are actually harder edged than most Britpop bands were. The softer side of Britpop is represented today in the guise of the likes of Coldplay and Snow Patrol though.
― You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Sunday, 20 February 2011 18:27 (fifteen years ago)
oh yeah i guess i meant to say that this landfill business is the rebirth of arse-end, 1k995-7 era britpop. bands i can't even remember the names of. the supernaturals. not the more defensible earlier stuff.
― for all the fucked-up children of this world we give you 1p3 (history mayne), Sunday, 20 February 2011 18:30 (fifteen years ago)
Also noted were the band’s growing similarities in musical direction to The Fratellis’ and the Arctic Monkeys.[38] The band commented on the album’s style, "I think we've made a dynamic album," Pritchard said. "Every song has its own character. It's a good pop album."[27]
They also are influenced byThe Velvet Underground and covered "Sweet Jane".

you will have, they had a couple of pretty horrible ubiquitous hits
― Nulty By Nature (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 20 February 2011 18:34 (fifteen years ago)
The band were watching a video recording of themselves playing a gig, and misheard the ending refrain ‘Its alright, it’s alright’ from the song ‘In The City’ as ‘razor-light, razor-light’ which was then chosen as the band name.

During their first tour of 2008, Roy Stride lost his voice en route to a gig in Birmingham and was diagnosed with laryngitis, forcing the band to reschedule a series of dates on the tour.

John Aizlewood of Q. May 2010. gave the album 4 stars, commenting:
"There are no curveballs, no experimental digressions, nothing other than 10 of Roy Stride's focused slabs of honed guitar pop, summed up by the first 26 seconds of opening track This Ain't A Love Song, where soaring keyboards explode into a chanted "na na na".

Generally, Britpop/indie is better the catchier choruses, the more twee, the happier, the less offensive, the more derivative, the less provoking. So many of these bands are great.
― You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Sunday, 20 February 2011 20:31 (fifteen years ago)
are you sure?
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 20 February 2011 20:34 (fifteen years ago)
Wouldn't waste a shit on this pile of turgid bollocks.
Exceptions to Snow Patrol (pre you know what, although did enjoy their recentish '...City...' song and some of their earleir songs were fine- 'Little Hide' and 'An Olive Grove...'.and the Futureheads were Ok once. I also don't quite get the hate for Biff C. What I've heard, I quite like some of their chordage.
100 reasons looked like Slade or somebody, but weren't quite worthy of hate?
The remainder is so despicable. That fucking TopLoader song.... I can't even...
Razorlight or Scouting for Girls?
Die scum. Die, you scummy cunts

― Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 February 2011 21:22 (fifteen years ago)
they used to be a kinda six by seven / electrelane fan sort of band didn't they?
― fuck you jan stepek you kurwa (nakhchivan), Monday, 21 February 2011 21:23 (fifteen years ago)
no, they were never in the same lleague as six by seven. Anyone i knew who liked Snow Patrol were damn twee huggers
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 February 2011 21:27 (fifteen years ago)
i remem someone whose ftp i used to use when i was 15 or so was into those kinda bands (and slint/fugazi/us maple etc) and had some snow patrol albums
then a few years later they were some huge MOR atrocity
idk, can't remem any of their music from either phase
― fuck you jan stepek you kurwa (nakhchivan), Monday, 21 February 2011 21:30 (fifteen years ago)
sums up their mediocrity
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 February 2011 21:31 (fifteen years ago)
like I alluded to in my longass post upthread, they started off being a winsome bite of Sebadoh with the wonky bits stripped out... the transition into MOR atrocity was kinda odd but hardly like they were depriving the ~indie universe~ of future greatness
― Jari Litmandem (DJ Mencap), Monday, 21 February 2011 22:30 (fifteen years ago)
the first 3 or 4 snow patrol singles are quite good imo
reindeer section had that one song i like 'you are my joy' but the rest of their oeuvre was neither here nor there
