Give it a second listen.
― Ned Raggett, Saturday, 19 February 2011 01:37 (fifteen years ago)
It was sort of boring on the second listen, too, but it was great played quietly at dinner tonight. This is like an album of subtle interstitials from an album we haven't heard yet.
Speaking of which, I'm curious how a band like this would do with a pledge drive model. Like, "Here is our album for sale. If we sell x copies, we will release a new single/EP/album for free."
― Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 19 February 2011 01:43 (fifteen years ago)
Three times now. It's not getting better, and it's definitely one of their worst, but it's still a good album.
I think the release strategy encouraged hopes of grandeur, and perhaps the fact that it's not all that is sitting uncomfortably with some.
― egregious fannydangling (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 19 February 2011 02:51 (fifteen years ago)
It's also incredibly pretentious but I mean hello it's Radiohead.

― harlan, Saturday, 19 February 2011 02:57 (fifteen years ago)
sudden release = no hype = not proud of album = maximize profits w/ "revolutionary new packaging"
― The previous message has been brought to you by (kelpolaris), Saturday, 19 February 2011 02:59 (fifteen years ago)
that doesn't really make sense, though, to say they released it suddenly because they weren't proud of it. they released in rainbows 10 days after announcing it, and that was great.
― kaygee, Saturday, 19 February 2011 03:07 (fifteen years ago)
Too many ppl in here talking about In Rainbows' greatness as if it were some incontrovertible fact. Really messes with a lot of folks' credibility...
― kingkongvsbasedgodzilla (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 19 February 2011 03:17 (fifteen years ago)
i'm leaving myself the option to ending up loving this eventually (right now I like just about every track, but I'm not shitting my pants over any single song), but I would go ahead and say this is the first radiohead album since OK Computer that won't be a "best of 2011" consensus top 10 pick. Not that that matters, but I'm already getting that feeling that the follow-up will be tagged with a "return to form" kind of label.
xpost In Rainbows was awesome
― you are taking me apart, Lisa! (Z S), Saturday, 19 February 2011 03:17 (fifteen years ago)
and also pfffft at making fun of In Rainbows like it's the most obvious fucking thing in the world that it sucked. There are plenty of things that I'm not in love with but I wouldn't think it would take a collapse in credibility for others to like
― you are taking me apart, Lisa! (Z S), Saturday, 19 February 2011 03:18 (fifteen years ago)
my wife likes that first video that was released today. she's been doing the thom yorke dance this evening.
and yes, in rainbows was (still is) awesome.

lol - i actually just put on In Rainbows after failing to make it through Limbs again!

ha, that reminds me, i'm more sympathetic to a thom spazz out dance than most people, but good lord that video. it would be one thing to do that to a song like idioteque, but it seems kinda inappropriate for a song on the level of lotus flower (and like I said, I enjoy Lotus Flower but don't love it (yet)).
― you are taking me apart, Lisa! (Z S), Saturday, 19 February 2011 03:25 (fifteen years ago)
Lotus Flower >>>>>>>> 75% of In Rainbows
(& actually pffft to anyone acting like OK Computer wasn't the most consensus of Radiohead picks, certainly the first EoY consensus pick, tho perhaps that's what u meant...?

oh, I meant to include OKC as a consensus end of the year pick.

in rainbows part 2 was better than this
― iatee, Saturday, 19 February 2011 03:56 (fifteen years ago)
not that this is bad, but I've listened to it like 8 times now and I still can't really remember which song is which

This seems a little back-loaded on the first few listens. I think I still like it a lot though.
― monster_xero, Saturday, 19 February 2011 04:51 (fifteen years ago)
finally listen to this for the first time. it just seemed kind of there...floating on top of everything, made me want to get high though. 37 minutes and only eight songs seems short but this was only the first listen and was just OK.
― World Series champion San Francisco Giants (Bee OK), Saturday, 19 February 2011 04:53 (fifteen years ago)
So I still haven't heard this. It will have to wait till tomorrow.
But a friend and I sat up talking all night and listening to select tracks from Pablo Honey onwards, including B-sides like 'Faithless The Wonderboy', 'How Can You Be Sure' and 'Molasses.
It's actually incredible how far this band has come and how consistent the output. Someone I know who works for a large record company wrote today on Facebook: "Note to the world - Radiohead haven't made a good album in over ten years". I could only say that they've never made a record that's disappointed me.
I don't count myself as a huge huge fan, but Radiohead have been a part of my life since The Bends helped me through those horrible pubescent years; OK Computer challenged my burgeoning ego as a sixth former; Kid A and Amnesiac soundtracked my university years while Hail To The Thief confirmed me as a working adult with a proper girlfriend and a workaday job... In Raibows came out on the perfect Autumn day, a couple days after I turned 27. No job. Broke. Not a care. Went out cycling with my friend. At ease. Not thinking too much.
Then you listen to Lewis (Mistreated). Just another random b-side. And now you think they're the biggest and most deserving band in the universe. These grunge opportunists. These impassioned opportunists. These negative creeps.
Hail to Radiohead. I can't wait to hear what they've got in store for my thirties.

For me this album really lacks a centerpiece. I like/love it, and it's not going to affect how much I stan for Radiohead, but it's definitely not my favorite, and I think they can do better. And I think they will in the future. It's just a strange interlude but it doesn't sound like an end to their ability to write great music.
― Melissa W, Saturday, 19 February 2011 05:50 (fifteen years ago)
Because this still contains man elements that I love.
― Melissa W, Saturday, 19 February 2011 05:52 (fifteen years ago)
many. not man. I don't know how I feel about man elements.

― Johnny Fever, Saturday, 19 February 2011 06:25 (fifteen years ago)
new thom dancing meme is also way more entertaining than more reactions, so i'll chop chop -
1st listen - what are ppl complaining about, the production is typically gorgeous and musicianship is A+2nd - 4th listens - eh, there's no Reckoner on here, or anything I can remember or hum later. Radiohead - tunes = wtf?5th listen (several hours later) - still can't really hum anything but the sound is more addictive. Great I have a new tuneless drug.

after some more listening i think 'codex' is a worthy successor to 'pyramid song' and 'sail to the moon', really lovely tune
― ciderpress, Saturday, 19 February 2011 08:38 (fifteen years ago)
I like them at their most krauty so this is as up my street as they ever get, by and large.
― Ukranian crocodile that swallowed a mobile phone (Scik Mouthy), Saturday, 19 February 2011 08:44 (fifteen years ago)
As I alluded to above, this is their first album which is absolutely fine - just fine - while it's on, but truly pales in comparison to their previous output. It's nowhere even near "The Eraser." Should have been a free-EP teaser for a forthcoming album that has songs on it.
― Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 19 February 2011 13:55 (fifteen years ago)
(Lack of songs on this album being hyperbole, but nothing here jumps out as a particularly strong song, or even a strong composition.)
