anyway I recommend everybody to start w/ the earl & tyler joints, my comp's primarily a non-earl/non-tyler stroll through their catalog from the end of 2010

it made me wish batman had written an article on mfas (Edward III), Friday, 18 February 2011 20:26 (fifteen years ago)

e3 yr comp was the first thing i listened to and i really appreciated it. seems like a good selection (altho i'm hardly qualified to critique it...)

on some outer space shit (bernard snowy), Friday, 18 February 2011 20:29 (fifteen years ago)

glad you dug it!

it was culled from about 6 hours of OF stuff that was available at the time, did it for myself really but it came out well so there it is

ended up with nothing from the earl, tyler or radical albums cuz I was burnt out on them at the time, I think every other release got represented w/ at least one track

ullr saves (gbx), Friday, 18 February 2011 20:58 (fifteen years ago)

the mike g album, ali, is pretty weak, but one of my favorite OF jams "brown bag" is on it, reminds me of some stark 80s schoolly d track... produced by syd tha kyd

Also, new album from um...Frank Ocean? Who sang on one of their albums? D/l ing now. So we'll see.

Alex in Montreal, Friday, 18 February 2011 21:09 (fifteen years ago)

Um. Two tracks in and I have no idea what is going on? It's like...vaguely anthemic pop music? Not really R&B at all. Not sure if it's any good or not. Seems very very very M.O.R.?

Alex in Montreal, Friday, 18 February 2011 21:41 (fifteen years ago)

Coldplay-esque moments, even.

Alex in Montreal, Friday, 18 February 2011 21:41 (fifteen years ago)

Except good?

Alex in Montreal, Friday, 18 February 2011 21:43 (fifteen years ago)

alex, baffled, liveblogs frank ocean

it made me wish batman had written an article on mfas (Edward III), Friday, 18 February 2011 21:48 (fifteen years ago)

Seriously. Listen to this and tell me you expected anything like this out of Odd Future. Even Jet Age of Tomorrow doesn't really gesture in this direction.

Alex in Montreal, Friday, 18 February 2011 21:49 (fifteen years ago)

Novacane is a ballad about meeting a girl at Coachella who wants to be a dentist, works in porn to pay for college and falling in love with her?

Alex in Montreal, Friday, 18 February 2011 21:50 (fifteen years ago)

sounds about right

it made me wish batman had written an article on mfas (Edward III), Friday, 18 February 2011 21:56 (fifteen years ago)

There Will Be Tears zooms between weird glitch pop beats and who knows what.
American Wedding is a 7 minute song about teenage gunshot weddings over top of the instrumental from Hotel California?
This is so fucking strange.

Alex in Montreal, Friday, 18 February 2011 22:29 (fifteen years ago)

performance on fallon was super-awsum, but the song rly didn't seem like what my local high-school could compose.

yah i rewatched it & i can totally see if someone wasnt familiar w/ OF and/or had listened to this song as recorded could easily think it was terrible & amateur-ish; it really sounds a ton better not live

johnny crunch, Saturday, 19 February 2011 02:25 (fifteen years ago)

but i mean it's just so, so, so simple. "WOLF! GANG! WOLF! GANG! WOLF! GANG" ... that scheme is like the most done in all hip-hop.

johnny crunch, Saturday, 19 February 2011 04:13 (fifteen years ago)

noz is loving this frank ocean album

teenage cream (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 19 February 2011 05:07 (fifteen years ago)

Don't think the Frank Ocean album has any input from the other members of Odd Future and i'm pretty sure the first track is a Coldplay cover.

Number None, Saturday, 19 February 2011 05:51 (fifteen years ago)

Pretty sure the non-Syd OF members (or at least Tyler and Hodgy) have plenty groupies judging by the Golf Wang tumblr.

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Saturday, 19 February 2011 07:37 (fifteen years ago)

hodgy could get it tbh

teenage cream (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 19 February 2011 07:53 (fifteen years ago)

this can't be tyler right?

teenage cream (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 19 February 2011 08:02 (fifteen years ago)

I kind of doubt anyone might have been impersonating him four years ago, plus I'm pretty sure I read something where he said OF started as an idea for a magazine.

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Saturday, 19 February 2011 08:14 (fifteen years ago)

ah

teenage cream (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 19 February 2011 08:14 (fifteen years ago)

Ed, this mix is a great primer. Really enjoying it.

Let the Light Come in From the Dark, Superman (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 19 February 2011 20:05 (fifteen years ago)

I put on Yonkers last night to show my girl the video and our pitbull went CRAZY started barking at the screen, hair up on the neck, growling
Totally wanted to kill. i think it was the bass?

Let the Light Come in From the Dark, Superman (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 19 February 2011 20:06 (fifteen years ago)

it was probably the pitbull

teenage cream (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 19 February 2011 20:12 (fifteen years ago)

have you ever played pitbull for your pitbull?

teenage cream (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 19 February 2011 20:12 (fifteen years ago)

game recognize game

ullr saves (gbx), Saturday, 19 February 2011 20:13 (fifteen years ago)

i'm sayin

teenage cream (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 19 February 2011 20:15 (fifteen years ago)

there's no pitbull in Yonkers?
and yes i have played pitbull for pitbull
she seems generally okay with music
though some bass heavy hip hop and some experimental damages her

Let the Light Come in From the Dark, Superman (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 19 February 2011 20:27 (fifteen years ago)

probably yr dog wanted to challenge tyler for alpha-male status and then got rly upset when he just ignored it

on some outer space shit (bernard snowy), Saturday, 19 February 2011 20:43 (fifteen years ago)

the pitbull is a female, isn't it just evidence of ice cr?m's assertion that girls don't like odd future

lex pretend, Saturday, 19 February 2011 20:46 (fifteen years ago)

every once in a while my cat comes into the room while I'm listening to "bass heavy hip hop" or dance music
freezes in place for a minute, staring at me or just off into space, listening
with a really thoughtful/maybe just confused expression on her face, like she's trying to figure out what to do next
and then starts to kind of haltingly move her head/neck/tail
and I think for a second that she's discovered the simple joys of dancing
but instead she just leaves the room

fucking animals

on some outer space shit (bernard snowy), Saturday, 19 February 2011 20:47 (fifteen years ago)

most of the time tho music is just something for a cat to ignore or glare at you about

on some outer space shit (bernard snowy), Saturday, 19 February 2011 20:49 (fifteen years ago)

most of the time tho musiceverything in life is just something for a cat to ignore or glare at you about

odd future cat glare kill them all

johnny crunch, Saturday, 19 February 2011 20:56 (fifteen years ago)

of should do a song/video based around the concept of the cat piano. feel like it would fit in with their whole antisocial schtick.

on some outer space shit (bernard snowy), Saturday, 19 February 2011 21:08 (fifteen years ago)

"and then starts to kind of haltingly move her head/neck/tail"

read that as Hating + moving her head/neck/tail on a scan and was all like. Cats ARE fucking haters.

owenf, Saturday, 19 February 2011 21:20 (fifteen years ago)

"Novacane" is dope and all, but I didn't really need to waste time out of my life hearing a dude rewrite the lyrics to "Hotel California".

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Sunday, 20 February 2011 09:32 (fifteen years ago)

Maybe that should have gone in rolling r&b.
