adolescent consumerism collect them all

hahahahahaha

i think that applies more to lil b though

lex pretend, Friday, 18 February 2011 02:11 (fifteen years ago)

Well yeah, but Lil B being more prolific than most people (self included) can keep up with plays heavily into that.

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Friday, 18 February 2011 02:14 (fifteen years ago)

yeah that's why i said that?

i don't think lil b being that prolific is actually a good thing - admirable maybe, in its way - can't bring myself to care about following any artist down that rabbit hole

lex pretend, Friday, 18 February 2011 02:16 (fifteen years ago)

i fully admit that it's the cvltishness of odd future that's part of why they're offputting - the actual music i'm fine with, mostly, though i'd never single it out to particularly rep for it

lex pretend, Friday, 18 February 2011 02:18 (fifteen years ago)

dumb reason imo

flopson, Friday, 18 February 2011 02:20 (fifteen years ago)

even without it i think they're just okay at best

lex pretend, Friday, 18 February 2011 02:21 (fifteen years ago)

which is why it seems so silly

lex pretend, Friday, 18 February 2011 02:22 (fifteen years ago)

Who cares? I can't keep up with everything Gucci Mane puts out either, but that hardly stops me from enjoying either one of them.

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Friday, 18 February 2011 02:23 (fifteen years ago)

(xpost)
so the cultishness decreases your enjoyment of the music
which in turn makes the cultishness seem even more offensive
causing it to further reduce your etc etc

lex i think you need an intervention before this spirals outta control

on some outer space shit (bernard snowy), Friday, 18 February 2011 02:25 (fifteen years ago)

there are always gonna be artists or groups of artists who put out such a huge amount of music that it's part of the fun for the obsessives and daunting or off-putting for everyone else. the big diff now seems to me that where before you could be say a Prince fan who tracks down every bootleg and demo and extended mix or a Prince fan who just buys the albums, w/ a lot of hip hop artists now there's just a constant flood of product and not much distinction between the stuff for everyone and the stuff for the obsessives, which leaves more room for fans to decide what's good or bad but still leaves the whole process a bit messier.

some dude, Friday, 18 February 2011 02:47 (fifteen years ago)

otm but if anything odd future are bucking that trend, or at the very least they go to greater lengths to differentiate & pace things appropriately than most

flopson, Friday, 18 February 2011 02:49 (fifteen years ago)

I don't think anyone here said that's an issue with OF.

this thread got shit over night. kudos on the trolling icey

if there is a King Moaty, apparently he is huge into slapstick. (a hoy hoy), Friday, 18 February 2011 07:43 (fifteen years ago)

alls i'm saying is that oddfuture is really easy to project a lot of stuff onto, like i'd like to see them as part of some glen e. friedman cali punk/hiphop/skater culture but the truth is that's all probably just old shit they don't know and they like eminem and soulja boy and new music

this is the whole reason why odd future is awesome. obviously they don't exist in a vacuum but they're on some new shit and don't give a fuck about olds.

gr8080, Friday, 18 February 2011 07:50 (fifteen years ago)

ice cr?m trolling not entirely offtm but thing is you've just walked into a room full of shirtless dudes drinking shitty beer

i like the odd moments when they break into some old school 90s backpacker stuff, it's cuet

like this part in "money talks"

money is good
but it could be evil
spell it backwards - live
keep it all cerebral
if you black, white, asian, or hebrew
just do what we do and get this money, people

hell that's almost 80s-ish actually not even 90s

ice cr?m's world of female people (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 18 February 2011 19:50 (fifteen years ago)

earl, bastard, blackenedwhite, sampler

teenage cream (J0rdan S.), Friday, 18 February 2011 19:51 (fifteen years ago)

Earl Sweatshirt - EARL
Tyler the Creator - Bastard
Domo Genesis - Rolling Papers
MellowHype - BlackenedWhite

i think those are the 4 we've been talking about most around here

ciderpress, Friday, 18 February 2011 19:52 (fifteen years ago)

Radical is the best of the two mixtapes.
Otherwise, EARL, Bastard, Rolling Papers, BlackenedWhite for albums
Plus, Yonkers, Sandwitches, Fuck Christmas singles.

MellowHype's first album YelloWhite is ok, but not amazing.
Haven't listened to Mike G's 'Ali' yet
Jet Age of Tomorrow make some nice beats even if they aren't like the FOREFRONT of OFWGKTA or whatever.

Alex in Montreal, Friday, 18 February 2011 20:02 (fifteen years ago)

And 'Flashlight' is an interesting sort of detour. Floaty pretty R&B single by Syd tha Kyd, OFWGKTA's engineer.

Sidenote: Her twitter feed is hilarious if only because it consists significantly of her getting hit on by hundreds of female Odd Future fans. I dunno. Something amuses me about a 10-deep collective of mostly guys under 20 who seem pretty much unconcerned with girls outside of Tyler's emo raps and then their lesbian/bi engineer getting all the groupies.

Alex in Montreal, Friday, 18 February 2011 20:07 (fifteen years ago)

I thought we had established that girls don't listen to OFWGKTA

ice cr?m's world of female people (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 18 February 2011 20:09 (fifteen years ago)

Tell that to the girls asking Syd where Earl is and propositioning her on the interwebs, I suppose?

Alex in Montreal, Friday, 18 February 2011 20:19 (fifteen years ago)

Anyway, the point wasn't that. The point was this

Flashlight (feat. Lux) - Syd tha Kyd

Alex in Montreal, Friday, 18 February 2011 20:22 (fifteen years ago)

it made me wish batman had written an article on mfas (Edward III), Friday, 18 February 2011 20:23 (fifteen years ago)

anyway I recommend everybody to start w/ the earl & tyler joints, my comp's primarily a non-earl/non-tyler stroll through their catalog from the end of 2010

it made me wish batman had written an article on mfas (Edward III), Friday, 18 February 2011 20:26 (fifteen years ago)

e3 yr comp was the first thing i listened to and i really appreciated it. seems like a good selection (altho i'm hardly qualified to critique it...)

on some outer space shit (bernard snowy), Friday, 18 February 2011 20:29 (fifteen years ago)

glad you dug it!

it was culled from about 6 hours of OF stuff that was available at the time, did it for myself really but it came out well so there it is

ended up with nothing from the earl, tyler or radical albums cuz I was burnt out on them at the time, I think every other release got represented w/ at least one track

it made me wish batman had written an article on mfas (Edward III), Friday, 18 February 2011 20:37 (fifteen years ago)

the mike g album, ali, is pretty weak, but one of my favorite OF jams "brown bag" is on it, reminds me of some stark 80s schoolly d track... produced by syd tha kyd

Also, new album from um...Frank Ocean? Who sang on one of their albums? D/l ing now. So we'll see.

Alex in Montreal, Friday, 18 February 2011 21:09 (fifteen years ago)

Um. Two tracks in and I have no idea what is going on? It's like...vaguely anthemic pop music? Not really R&B at all. Not sure if it's any good or not. Seems very very very M.O.R.?
