mencap is invaluable -- lol'd at a hoy hoy
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 17 February 2011 20:06 (fifteen years ago)
the arctic monkeys are at least still making albums that some ppl care about + they kinda left this sound behind for the josh homme thing or w/e
plus their first album >>>>>>>>> any album by anyone on this list, still probably one of the 30 best records of the decade IMO -- also they were cool live
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 17 February 2011 20:07 (fifteen years ago)
also that reading poster is so lo_Ol -- mostly still contemplating the comedy tent at a british music festival, need to let that one marinate for a while
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 17 February 2011 20:08 (fifteen years ago)
2001s Reading Festival line-up looks like it could have been fun as hell - you'd see Malkmus followed by Roots Manuva? Fuck Yesh.

2001 Reading was the first festival I went to. The only things I can remember seeing are PJ Harvey and Moldy Peaches.
― oppet, Thursday, 17 February 2011 20:18 (fifteen years ago)
Not what their lyrics are saying at all. You must be thinking of the Arctic Strawmen.
― DL, Thursday, 17 February 2011 20:18 (fifteen years ago)
can do noms for an american versh itt if u like but
KINGS OF LEON
probably enough
― nulty dread (nakhchivan), Thursday, 17 February 2011 20:20 (fifteen years ago)
America doesn't quite work in the same way, it's had other dodgy trends (nu-metal, Nickelback, virtually every guitar band Pitchfork has repped for in a decade) but not quite the same all-pervasive uselessness.
For some utterly bizarre reason I opted to go to the Saturday of that Reading festival. Can't even remember why given that Mogwai are the only band on that bill I'd have been particularly arsed about.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 17 February 2011 20:26 (fifteen years ago)
You can't put remixes on your compilation, what unites most of these bands is a deep-set Luddism, either with the band or their fans. Presumably the reason the Klaxons aren't here.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 17 February 2011 20:27 (fifteen years ago)
there's endless american shit too but it doesn't coalesce as easily around a single all-consuming landfill goatse like the uk stuff
― nulty dread (nakhchivan), Thursday, 17 February 2011 20:28 (fifteen years ago)
isn't one of them shagging sophie ellis bexter? kudos to that guy
take notes p4k feebs, this is reviewing
― for all the fucked-up children of this world we give you 1p3 (history mayne), Thursday, 17 February 2011 20:29 (fifteen years ago)
wdn't have included the klaxons even if someone nominated them cuz they are the only uk indie band of the last decade i didn't hate
― nulty dread (nakhchivan), Thursday, 17 February 2011 20:29 (fifteen years ago)
Yes, remixes are cheating I guess. Would happily sub Kasabian's Empire and Florence's Rabbit Heart. (Don't know why Florence is on the list TBH)

athlete - kinda copped Coldplay's shtick mid career, right? Pretty shit. Saw them support Mansun as an idiot youth and they had a theremin freakout bitbabyshambles - we paid for blood imobiffy clyro - funny shit, man florence and the machine - tasteful but private school hhmmmhard-fi - drunkenly pissing on a shop is really poignant when you think about ithundred reasons - hahajoe lean and the jing jang jong - don't think this band existed?kaiser chiefs - don't think I've ever heard this bandkasabian - that picture of all those old Oasis fans with haircuts their drooping faces could not support - should by rights be from Birmingham, but near enough I guesskeane - I think Southall wrote some good, possibly libelous shit about how this band's singer is a pisshead because he hates his own band so much?mumford and sons - still haven't heard these but I think they are from private school and I trust y'all's judgementnoah and the whale - " "pigeon detectives - ? This is a stupid namerazorlight - don't how get how dudes can get egomaniacal about writing songs which have so few characteristicsscouting for girls - Yes OK you have an accent, maybe put these kind of guys in a room with Jamie T and see if they manage to conjure up a glottal stop so large it destroys them allsnow patrol - credit to their endurance for staying awake long enough to finish recording that one song; think blueski once said this band's lead singer has a swimming pool in the shape of a swimming pool - I bet he loves to sensibly dive into it with his best friend, Stewart Downingstarsailor - funnily wimpy, got a half-decent JLC remixthe courteeners - ?the cribs - I kind of imagine these guys being really heroically unintelligent in their daily lives, but in an entertaining, Terry Fuckwitt kinda way, you just keep doing your thing the Cribsthe enemy - don't think this band existedthe feeling - seemed to be really proud of themselves, but by rights the only people who should ever have paid any attention to them is members of their own family, filming their opening slot gig on a middle of the range camcorder in an otherwise deserted function room. Kind remind me of a guy at Uni who told me his band were "going in kind of a rock-y direction"the fratellis - friend who worked at a HMV they did a signing at said they had minders to look after them, one of whom came up to him and warned him to make sure none of the staff pestered the Fratellis for autographs while they were having a pre-opening Fratellis-only shopping session; reportedly none of the staff had planned to do so because the Fratellis are shit twatsthe futureheads - good bunch of lads imothe hoosiers - the adverts where these guys were all like "apparently nobody's heard of us!!!" actually did make me want to kick their heads inthe kooks - think this band has curly hair? [a Google Image Search suggests that one of them actually has an unshowered boy version of Mira from Ladytron's haircut]the magic numbers - [fat joke]the ordinary boys - guy I went to school with did the reggae toast bit on one of their songs so not themthe others - chalk one up for the public on this onethe rakes - boringthe stereophonics - funny shit, manthe twang - Oh Bir-ming-ham! Starsailor - Four to the Floor (Thin White Duke Mix)
Hahah this -- Futureheads excepted in that I need to relisten and see what I think -- was the one song I was thinking I might save from all these clods. Though Matt DC's point applies.

About 75% of these bands would be top of a worst band ever poll individually, for me, but seeing them altogether is making me realise just how impressive Scouting For Girls actually are at being beyond shit. Stereophonics were always the worst, until Toploader came along, then Starsailor (have a feeling their disgustingness is being overlooked amongst the strong competition - give that one about 'daddy was an alcoholic' another 'spin' because they are def. contenders), then the Feeling (the day PopJustice started acting as though they were 'just great pop music actually' is the day I stopped reading PJ), then Scouting for Girls have somehow managed to perfect the formula.

kings of leon and killers had hits over here
they're our problem i'm afraid
― goole, Thursday, 17 February 2011 21:35 (fifteen years ago)
both bands have a couple decent songs. KOLs had burned thru all of their good material in 2 EPs which was a shame for them.

Kings of Leon are like the most popular landfill band in the UK no question don't let's bust out the tribute band pics again
