Agree that the Futureheads are too good to be here, don't really understand the same being said about the Rakes though

I kinda feel like the Arctic Monkeys are the stupid-regional-accented elephant shitting the room up here

FUCK

nulty dread (nakhchivan), Thursday, 17 February 2011 19:43 (fifteen years ago)

how come nobody thought of them

nulty dread (nakhchivan), Thursday, 17 February 2011 19:43 (fifteen years ago)

think there's an obvious reason

Elmer Fuiud (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 17 February 2011 19:44 (fifteen years ago)

[Unnamed Editor] once asked me if I would be able to very quickly write 500 words about the manufactured nature of the Monkeys' rise to fame and whether or not that tied in with football hooliganism in any way

My answer was "probably not", and I will always regret that

MPx4A, Thursday, 17 February 2011 19:44 (fifteen years ago)

the munkehs should at least have been nominated

nulty dread (nakhchivan), Thursday, 17 February 2011 19:45 (fifteen years ago)

i thought i might like at least one song by one band on this list... but no. all terrible, good work!

http://i56.tinypic.com/xnsu1g.gif (max arrrrrgh), Thursday, 17 February 2011 19:45 (fifteen years ago)

athlete - iirc their second album cover looks like a hoover and that makes me think of lj and that makes me giggle.
babyshambles - POTENTIALLY THE BEST first album had some killer jams on it. dhoerty is a dick but at least a panto-dick.
biffy clyro - POTENTIALLY THE WORST lol smelly and welsh.
florence and the machine - broad can't sing, saved by that remix which is a cover of their cover iirc.
hard-fi - arrogant tuneless dickheads who thought they were gonna save music or something.
hundred reasons - you know if hundred reasons make it, other kerrang fodder like A should. A was a useful band name when wanting to google someone, I guess.
joe lean and the jing jang jong - A name to bring me out in lex pretend esque hives.
kaiser chiefs - saved by tv panel show chumminess, i guess, but their music is wank, ey.
kasabian - THE ACTUAL WORST not because of the Oasis fan base or the shit songs but because of the ridiculous pretentiousness that means nothing and somehow getting away with it, like wtf? why weren't you dropped for releasing something called... give me a second to wiki it... West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum with *this* as the cover? http://img.amazon.ca/images/I/51VVTBiHXKL._SL500_AA300_.jpg
keane - eh. kinda pleasant for people in their 50s; would be like having michael buble in the poll.
mumford and sons - afaik i've successfully not heard this band, not at uni anymore i guess. one of them is shagging laura marling tho, so she may have a good influence in the future?
noah and the whale - lol what?
pigeon detectives - hey guys its the libertines! oh wait no it isn't
razorlight - POTENTIALLY THE WORST although saved by being almost comatose at Reading Festival after like an ounce of weed, stumbling back to my tent with a friend, giggling insently at how loud the chants of *RAZORSHITE RAZORSHITE RAZORetc* were getting, only to not end until their set did. We were in the furthest away tenting area and still heard the whole thing :D
scouting for girls - POTENTIALLY THE WORST scott mills pop
snow patrol - I started buying Q before I bought the NME as a teenager. I think they happened to go through a run of cover stars who I liked (Em, Radiohead, Libertines, PJ Harvey although maybe not in that order or exactly 4 months in a row iirc). It was incredibly shit to read.
starsailor - Drawing a blank.
the courteeners - hey guys its the libertines! oh wait no it isn't
the cribs - THE BEST these guys are awesome, even if one of them stuck his dick inside the fanny of kate nash.
the enemy - drawing a blank
the feeling - isn't one of them shagging sophie ellis bexter? kudos to that guy and maybe she had a decent enough influence for some album tracks here or there?
the fratellis - POTENTIALLY THE WORST ARGH THE WANT TO BREAK THINGS. Only not the worst because they seem to have been forgotten in time.
the futureheads - POTENTIALLY THE BEST Hounds of Love could be my #1 of the decade, proper sound of my university education was that.
the hoosiers - more like whoosiers, amirite? i once saw a Hollyoaks storyline based around going to buy their first album on the day it came out - FACT. Dunno what they sound like though.
the kooks - the kooks more like the shit.
the magic numbers - fat people get offended when you call them fat, fyi.
the ordinary boys - reggae done by white boys in this day and age always NAGL
the others - remember being sat in sixth form with my friend paul weeing ourselves at an nme article based around the main dude in this talking about how subversive he is because he likes obscure BOOKS by osbcure writers like GEORGE ORWELL and how he loved to bang TRANNIES. years later I stopped having a crush on a girl I knew, not because of her massive coke problem or thick brummie accent but because she was wearing an others t-shirt. they were shit, obv.
the rakes - i know this band existed and i know i've heard them before but
the stereophonics - of the 00s?
the twang - anything to do with Blak Twang? Cos he was dope once upon a time. Responsible for Estelle, too.
the view - scottish, iirc?
the wombats - POTENTIALLY THE BEST these guys had some jams iirc. Moving To New York, Lets Dance To Joy Division, Kill The Director - all legitimate late 00s indie club classics.
the zutons - lol ws the girl.
toploader - of the 00s?

those guys are just landfill indie with a "heritage art-school" twist. mmmhhh, just like in ye olde post-punke days.

http://i56.tinypic.com/xnsu1g.gif (max arrrrrgh), Thursday, 17 February 2011 19:48 (fifteen years ago)

Arctics first album was wank but the second and third had some stuff worth saving. Once the unreasonable and hilarious hype died, they turned out to be alright.

Are Kasabian really that bad? I thought of them as ok because I love the bass on this one:

as i've yet to hear M&S and there seems to be a lot of general hate on here, anyone want to tell me whats up?

if there is a King Moaty, apparently he is huge into slapstick. (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 17 February 2011 19:55 (fifteen years ago)

also toploader saved by Four Lions imo. could not do the same with Scouting For Girls or whoever.

Arctic Monkeys feel too big league to be on this poll, same reason the Libertines aren't here. Would probably have left Keane off as well.

Matt DC, Thursday, 17 February 2011 19:59 (fifteen years ago)

artic monkeys had something to say, man. about, like, how people who enjoy dancing and having fun are disgusting savages, yeah?

http://i56.tinypic.com/xnsu1g.gif (max arrrrrgh), Thursday, 17 February 2011 20:03 (fifteen years ago)

<3 this thread imo

mencap is invaluable -- lol'd at a hoy hoy

J0rdan S., Thursday, 17 February 2011 20:06 (fifteen years ago)

the arctic monkeys are at least still making albums that some ppl care about + they kinda left this sound behind for the josh homme thing or w/e

plus their first album >>>>>>>>> any album by anyone on this list, still probably one of the 30 best records of the decade IMO -- also they were cool live

J0rdan S., Thursday, 17 February 2011 20:07 (fifteen years ago)

also that reading poster is so lo_Ol -- mostly still contemplating the comedy tent at a british music festival, need to let that one marinate for a while

J0rdan S., Thursday, 17 February 2011 20:08 (fifteen years ago)

2001s Reading Festival line-up looks like it could have been fun as hell - you'd see Malkmus followed by Roots Manuva? Fuck Yesh.

if there is a King Moaty, apparently he is huge into slapstick. (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 17 February 2011 20:12 (fifteen years ago)

also D12?

would love to see an american equiv list just for lols. would actually be worse imo.

if there is a King Moaty, apparently he is huge into slapstick. (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 17 February 2011 20:18 (fifteen years ago)

2001 Reading was the first festival I went to. The only things I can remember seeing are PJ Harvey and Moldy Peaches.

oppet, Thursday, 17 February 2011 20:18 (fifteen years ago)

artic monkeys had something to say, man. about, like, how people who enjoy dancing and having fun are disgusting savages, yeah?

Not what their lyrics are saying at all. You must be thinking of the Arctic Strawmen.

DL, Thursday, 17 February 2011 20:18 (fifteen years ago)

can do noms for an american versh itt if u like but

KINGS OF LEON

probably enough

nulty dread (nakhchivan), Thursday, 17 February 2011 20:20 (fifteen years ago)

America doesn't quite work in the same way, it's had other dodgy trends (nu-metal, Nickelback, virtually every guitar band Pitchfork has repped for in a decade) but not quite the same all-pervasive uselessness.

For some utterly bizarre reason I opted to go to the Saturday of that Reading festival. Can't even remember why given that Mogwai are the only band on that bill I'd have been particularly arsed about.

Matt DC, Thursday, 17 February 2011 20:26 (fifteen years ago)

You can't put remixes on your compilation, what unites most of these bands is a deep-set Luddism, either with the band or their fans. Presumably the reason the Klaxons aren't here.

Matt DC, Thursday, 17 February 2011 20:27 (fifteen years ago)

there's endless american shit too but it doesn't coalesce as easily around a single all-consuming landfill goatse like the uk stuff

nulty dread (nakhchivan), Thursday, 17 February 2011 20:28 (fifteen years ago)

isn't one of them shagging sophie ellis bexter? kudos to that guy

take notes p4k feebs, this is reviewing

for all the fucked-up children of this world we give you 1p3 (history mayne), Thursday, 17 February 2011 20:29 (fifteen years ago)

wdn't have included the klaxons even if someone nominated them cuz they are the only uk indie band of the last decade i didn't hate

nulty dread (nakhchivan), Thursday, 17 February 2011 20:29 (fifteen years ago)

Yes, remixes are cheating I guess. Would happily sub Kasabian's Empire and Florence's Rabbit Heart. (Don't know why Florence is on the list TBH)

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 17 February 2011 20:30 (fifteen years ago)

there are a few outliers in the nominations but the coherence is still impressive imo

nulty dread (nakhchivan), Thursday, 17 February 2011 20:31 (fifteen years ago)

athlete - kinda copped Coldplay's shtick mid career, right? Pretty shit. Saw them support Mansun as an idiot youth and they had a theremin freakout bit
babyshambles - we paid for blood imo
biffy clyro - funny shit, man
florence and the machine - tasteful but private school hhmmm
hard-fi - drunkenly pissing on a shop is really poignant when you think about it
hundred reasons - haha
joe lean and the jing jang jong - don't think this band existed?
kaiser chiefs - don't think I've ever heard this band
kasabian - that picture of all those old Oasis fans with haircuts their drooping faces could not support - should by rights be from Birmingham, but near enough I guess
keane - I think Southall wrote some good, possibly libelous shit about how this band's singer is a pisshead because he hates his own band so much?
mumford and sons - still haven't heard these but I think they are from private school and I trust y'all's judgement
noah and the whale - " "
pigeon detectives - ? This is a stupid name
razorlight - don't how get how dudes can get egomaniacal about writing songs which have so few characteristics
scouting for girls - Yes OK you have an accent, maybe put these kind of guys in a room with Jamie T and see if they manage to conjure up a glottal stop so large it destroys them all
snow patrol - credit to their endurance for staying awake long enough to finish recording that one song; think blueski once said this band's lead singer has a swimming pool in the shape of a swimming pool - I bet he loves to sensibly dive into it with his best friend, Stewart Downing
starsailor - funnily wimpy, got a half-decent JLC remix
the courteeners - ?
the cribs - I kind of imagine these guys being really heroically unintelligent in their daily lives, but in an entertaining, Terry Fuckwitt kinda way, you just keep doing your thing the Cribs
the enemy - don't think this band existed
the feeling - seemed to be really proud of themselves, but by rights the only people who should ever have paid any attention to them is members of their own family, filming their opening slot gig on a middle of the range camcorder in an otherwise deserted function room. Kind remind me of a guy at Uni who told me his band were "going in kind of a rock-y direction"
the fratellis - friend who worked at a HMV they did a signing at said they had minders to look after them, one of whom came up to him and warned him to make sure none of the staff pestered the Fratellis for autographs while they were having a pre-opening Fratellis-only shopping session; reportedly none of the staff had planned to do so because the Fratellis are shit twats
the futureheads - good bunch of lads imo
the hoosiers - the adverts where these guys were all like "apparently nobody's heard of us!!!" actually did make me want to kick their heads in
the kooks - think this band has curly hair? [a Google Image Search suggests that one of them actually has an unshowered boy version of Mira from Ladytron's haircut]
the magic numbers - [fat joke]
the ordinary boys - guy I went to school with did the reggae toast bit on one of their songs so not them
the others - chalk one up for the public on this one
the rakes - boring
the stereophonics - funny shit, man
the twang - Oh Bir-ming-ham! (Oh Bir-ming-ham!) Is full of fun!!! (is full of fun!!!)
the view - Probably just formed because they realised the name was still available?
the wombats - me neither
the zutons - ?
toploader - WHAT ABOUT RAVEN?

MPx4A, Thursday, 17 February 2011 20:32 (fifteen years ago)

Starsailor - Four to the Floor (Thin White Duke Mix)

Hahah this -- Futureheads excepted in that I need to relisten and see what I think -- was the one song I was thinking I might save from all these clods. Though Matt DC's point applies.

If I could nominate one american band for this, i would nominate ORSON

seminal fuiud (NickB), Thursday, 17 February 2011 20:42 (fifteen years ago)

ok go

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 17 February 2011 20:44 (fifteen years ago)

About 75% of these bands would be top of a worst band ever poll individually, for me, but seeing them altogether is making me realise just how impressive Scouting For Girls actually are at being beyond shit.
Stereophonics were always the worst, until Toploader came along, then Starsailor (have a feeling their disgustingness is being overlooked amongst the strong competition - give that one about 'daddy was an alcoholic' another 'spin' because they are def. contenders), then the Feeling (the day PopJustice started acting as though they were 'just great pop music actually' is the day I stopped reading PJ), then Scouting for Girls have somehow managed to perfect the formula.

Not the real Village People, Thursday, 17 February 2011 20:52 (fifteen years ago)

Voted SFG in the end. Would like to see them go on from here to win the world cup of terrible.

seminal fuiud (NickB), Thursday, 17 February 2011 21:03 (fifteen years ago)
