What reads to their fans as passion seems like pure ham to me.

DL, Thursday, 17 February 2011 17:42 (fifteen years ago)

anyone who makes it to 1:28 deserves whatever they get

Elmer Fuiud (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 17 February 2011 17:42 (fifteen years ago)

NB: I don't hate Scumford and Co because they're not "real" enough. It's because they're shite.

Elmer Fuiud (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 17 February 2011 17:43 (fifteen years ago)

Oh sure, but a hammy idea of "real" is what they're selling and part of what makes them shite.

DL, Thursday, 17 February 2011 17:44 (fifteen years ago)

xxxxxxxxp it's like that bit from Black Books where Fran asks Bernard to sing an Irish song and he says "no, sing it yourself", so she improvises some cod faux-Irish bollocks.

Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Thursday, 17 February 2011 17:46 (fifteen years ago)

don't think I know this. Will hazard a guess at "who's that coming over your wife, it's Krissy Commons".

― Antoine Bugleboy (Merdeyeux), Thursday, 17 February 2011 17:40 (4 minutes ago)

i never even knew the tune was by a landfill staple, in any case it's

who's that coming over your girlfriend, is it a gangster, is it a gangster?

iirc

nulty dread (nakhchivan), Thursday, 17 February 2011 17:47 (fifteen years ago)

couple of missing entries : tiny dancers, the maccabees

Maccabees are gr8, u mad

rendezvous then i'm through with HOOS (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 17 February 2011 17:47 (fifteen years ago)

the zutons - fucking shit but at least they had a sax which means hey they're not the worst fucking shit

u mad

can't imagine how bad landfill AND saxophones together could be

nulty dread (nakhchivan), Thursday, 17 February 2011 17:50 (fifteen years ago)

sax is great you fule

Elmer Fuiud (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 17 February 2011 17:51 (fifteen years ago)

not heard that mumford song at all, but i had expected them to have a fiddle player.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 17 February 2011 17:51 (fifteen years ago)

They do look like a bunch of fiddlers, 'tis true.

seminal fuiud (NickB), Thursday, 17 February 2011 17:51 (fifteen years ago)

nae fuckin way it's the worst thing ever

there are records by the stooges and anton webern ruined by the presence of saxophones

nulty dread (nakhchivan), Thursday, 17 February 2011 17:52 (fifteen years ago)

xxp To compensate they have a banjo player and a keyboard player who only seems to know one chord.

Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Thursday, 17 February 2011 17:53 (fifteen years ago)

lol sax haters are crazy *tap tap tap*

Elmer Fuiud (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 17 February 2011 17:55 (fifteen years ago)

thought it was basically known at this point that liking sax is a side effect of those court ordered chemical castration injections

aw youmeatsix changed their name, my hilarious you meat six jokes are obsolete.

Antoine Bugleboy (Merdeyeux), Thursday, 17 February 2011 18:00 (fifteen years ago)

talk of Terris reminded me of seeing them play 1.5 songs, have horrible sound problems, get into a bit of handbags, and then apparently split up, at this Reading Festival:

http://i51.tinypic.com/j9a45y.jpg

these festival posters are fascinating because they are a great reminder of all of the dross that your mind has let you forget, but it is crazy looking back at the bands that were actually there that i have no recollection of.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 17 February 2011 18:00 (fifteen years ago)

e.g. black eyes peas headlining 3rd stage at 2000. who knew?

just going through the xfm playlist, idk what genre that chiddy is

sort of wonder if foals should have been itp even tho they weren't that landfill

LOFIDELITY ALLSTARS
THE LIVING END

nulty dread (nakhchivan), Thursday, 17 February 2011 18:06 (fifteen years ago)

Like the Futureheads, Foals are way too smart for this list.

If you'd put Foals in, you'd need Bloc Party too.

seminal fuiud (NickB), Thursday, 17 February 2011 18:08 (fifteen years ago)

Strokes bumped to the main stage @ that festival in timely wave of NME hype you may/may not recall.

Lo-Fi Allstars were p good, and were good on that occasion too.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 17 February 2011 18:09 (fifteen years ago)

yeah foals aren't a great fit with the view etc, but still pretty bad

they're a great example of earnest young musical types who can't think outside of thudding gtr indie tramlines

YEAH IT'S NOT ACTUALLY INDIE, IT'S MNML TECHNO WITH REAL INSTRUMENTS

nulty dread (nakhchivan), Thursday, 17 February 2011 18:10 (fifteen years ago)

Scouting for Girls are the worst, but don't belong among this lot - they're still popular, for a start.

if, Thursday, 17 February 2011 18:11 (fifteen years ago)

this thread is rapidly turning into "Innocuous crap uk bands that make you irrationally angry (a poll thread)"

also, foals are gr8 too, fuiud

Kind of sad to contemplate the diff between this 5th on the bill at 1971 Reading brit band with the 5th on the bill @ reading landfill listed above. (maybe I'm only going to convince NV w/this argument, IDK)

Pashmina, Thursday, 17 February 2011 18:12 (fifteen years ago)

who can say what's true any more in this crazy mixed up "Foals are great" world, Pash?

athlete: Pro: nothing. Con: vocalist v v irritating, bad slack playing on the rekkids I heard on radio back in the day
babyshambles: Pro: nothing. Con: total sinkhole of shitness w no redeeming qualities whatsoever CONTENDER
biffy clyro: have heard this but cannot remember a single thing, not even what it sounded like
florence and the machine: Pro: find singer attractive. Con: totally unmemorable, watched several youtubes, no memory at all of even what it sounded like
hard-fi: Pro: did actually rock, one of their singles was 1/2 decent IIRC. Con: not very memorable
hundred reasons: never heard them or can't remember then anyway
joe lean and the jing jang jong: have heard them but left no mark on my memory whatsoever.
kaiser chiefs: Pro: kind of liked the single or at least until heavy rotation made me sick of it. Con: none really, they weren't THAT bad.
kasabian: No memory of what these sounded like
keane: Pro: sounded pleasant on the radio once ior twice. Con: cannot remember any of their tunes, despite hearing at least one of them enough times.
mumford and sons: Pro: nothing. Con: Awful, awful music, CONTENDER.
noah and the whale: Pro: nothing Con: irritating sounding band IIRC. can barely remember them.
pigeon detectives: Who?
razorlight: Remember these getting some heavy airplay, cannot even remember what they sounded like.
scouting for girls: Pro: Nothing. Con: Shit, clunky music, shit tunes, creepy lyrics delivered by creepy singer, ugh WINNER
snow patrol: Passed through leaving no impression whatsoever.
starsailor: No memory of what this band even sounded like.
the courteeners: Vaguely remember the name, never heard the band.
the cribs: who?
the enemy: Who?
the feeling: Pro: can actually remember what their single went like. Con: I didn't like it, it was sappy.
the fratellis: Pro: nothing. Con: annoying sounding band CONTENDER
the futureheads: Never actually heard these.
the hoosiers: Pro: nothing. Con: Record was shit, only memorable bit was nicked off ELO anyway.
the kooks: Never heard these
the magic numbers: Pro: one of their singles was pleasant enough, find female member w long hair attractive. Con: nothing really, they were not all that bad I suppose.
the ordinary boys: Who?
the others: Who?
the rakes: Who?
the stereophonics: Band from an older gen? Don't feel like they belong here somehow. Awful, anyway.
the twang: Heard of these today, watched clip on youtube, have forgotten what it sounded like already.
the view: who?
the wombats: there used to ne a local pub blues band up here w/this name, I doubt this is them. Never heard of them.
the zutons: Never heard them
toploader: likewise stereophonics

If one of these bands had written or performed on tune that I can remember in it's entirety I would have more time for them even if I didn't like the tune. A lot of these bands get props for their songwriting skillz in their publicity doggerel IIRC? Should be prosecuted under the trades description act. If I were managing a 00's/10's landfill act I would tell them to fuck off with writing anything and get them to cover Harry Warren tunes.

Pashmina, Thursday, 17 February 2011 18:30 (fifteen years ago)

I was expecting real crappy uk bands. Almost all of these bands have one or two singles which I would deem decent or good. Nothing particulary groundbreaking and can't vouch for any of their albums tho so...

Are we voting the best one or the worst one?

Moka, Thursday, 17 February 2011 18:32 (fifteen years ago)

the ordinary boys: Who?

They were the band that Preston from Celeb Big Brother was in.

Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Thursday, 17 February 2011 18:36 (fifteen years ago)

the following bands i can't bring to mind a single note, even in cases where i know i've heard song or songs by them dozens of times: hundred reasons, joe lean and the jing jang jong, starsailor, the courteeners, the others

ey that's less than i thought it would be. god bless my excellent use of memory. the only one that seems unreasonable is starsailor, but all i remember of how they sounded is MEW MEW MEW MEW MEW.

Antoine Bugleboy (Merdeyeux), Thursday, 17 February 2011 18:38 (fifteen years ago)

Favorite ones in here would probably be: hard-fi (the few songs I've heard sounded influenced by The Clash which is good in my book), the magic numbers, kasabian, the zutons and kaiser chiefs.

Worst ones for me would be: mumford and sons, keane and scouting for girls.

Moka, Thursday, 17 February 2011 18:38 (fifteen years ago)

xp oh right, having looked at single releases, now i remember them. MEW MEW MEW MEW MEW was correct, though.

Antoine Bugleboy (Merdeyeux), Thursday, 17 February 2011 18:39 (fifteen years ago)

Wait... band that actually sounded influenced by The Clash was Harrisons. Only song I've heard of Hard-fi is 'hard to beat' which was good but not good enough to get me interested in them.

Moka, Thursday, 17 February 2011 18:41 (fifteen years ago)

moka do u like the fratellis

moka do u like the fratellis

― nulty dread (nakhchivan)

They've got a couple of songs which bring back great memories (particulary 'chelsea dagger') of the year I was living in France. That song was played every now and then on rock clubs and parties around Montpellier and Barcelona in 2007. Not sure if I'd have enjoyed them by listening to them on my own...

Moka, Thursday, 17 February 2011 18:52 (fifteen years ago)

lol that Reading poster Spiralli posted was the last one I, v probably ever, went to

I had a 'freakout' during Mercury Rev, not at all a voluntary one :(

is that a comment for me? Don't know what the lmstrm acronym means.

Moka, Thursday, 17 February 2011 18:59 (fifteen years ago)

no that was a mercury rev reference ;_;

nulty dread (nakhchivan), Thursday, 17 February 2011 19:04 (fifteen years ago)

biffy clyro - one of them tried to crack on to my gf circa 2002
florence and the machine - doesn't know how to work an ipod iirc

hundred reasons - bleh but shouldn't be here rly
joe lean and the jing jang jong - I am about two (2) ft away from a copy of their unreleased album as I type!!!!!
kaiser chiefs - the ILX thread about them hating poor ppl and women is good
kasabian - when they started they were marketed as these post-Boys Own kinda indie hippies who lived in the country and listened to Neu! - no-one but me remembers this tho
keane - I have another friend that looks like Tom Chaplin
mumford and sons - "this song's for Jemima who's about to go backpacking in India"

pigeon detectives - Petridish going in on these might be his finest hour
razorlight - lol
scouting for girls - I gave their last album minus infinity out of five in the mag I work at
snow patrol - Ulster's finest Sebadoh tribute band iirc
starsailor - ...
the courteeners - am not from Manchester so have no opinion
the cribs - see Hundred Reasons
the enemy - Jon 'Gaunty' Gaunt
the feeling - Sophie 'Ellis' Bextor
the fratellis - is Chelsea Dagger really ubiquitous? I have never *knowingly* heard it
the futureheads - only in this cos of Hounds of Love right?
the hoosiers - couldn't name a song
the kooks - even Drowned in Sound scored points off these
the magic numbers - Meh-gic Numeh-bers morelike
the ordinary boys - wish I'd not started this now
the others - love that HMHB lyric about guerilla gigs
the rakes - I know ppl of ~refined taste~ who like these, w/e
the stereophonics - stay strong Mabel Cable
the twang - not endorsed by John Gaunt
the view - their last album was called 'Which Bitch?', feel like this needs to be noted
the wombats - these guys are actually rly popular on the quiet
the zutons - think I sold their first single for a decent sum
toploader - stay strong Gail Porter

Jari Litmandem (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 17 February 2011 19:11 (fifteen years ago)

kaiser chiefs - the ILX thread about them hating poor ppl and women is good

I'd forgotten about this, it was funny, yeh.
