― flopson, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 01:00 (fifteen years ago)
Calling it now, "Kaputt" will go gold.*
*In accordance with new downgraded RIAA standards, the "gold" designation now means selling 25,000 copies.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 01:27 (fifteen years ago)
calling it now: ilm backlash during end of year list season will result in Kaputt being the 2011 equivalent of Merriweather Post Pavilion and 85% of the board will claim to have never liked it in the first place
― rendezvous then i'm through with HOOS (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 01:38 (fifteen years ago)
Merriweather what?
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 01:46 (fifteen years ago)
Not sure if you are being sarcastic or not, but the much maligned album by Animal Collective that was all over year-end lists two years ago, much to the ire of many ilxors. It was part of the dreaded GAPDY poll result axis of evil.
― rendezvous then i'm through with HOOS (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 01:49 (fifteen years ago)
there's no way, merriweather was almost universally acclaimed. this one's been pretty lukewarm
― ouroboros shoal (diamonddave85), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 02:09 (fifteen years ago)
acclaimed by critics and fans alike, I should say
I was mostly being sarcastic with my prediction, just playing off the early year record gets tons of buzz only to have people turn on it by the end of the year.
― rendezvous then i'm through with HOOS (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 02:39 (fifteen years ago)
yea I figured as much but I didn't wanna be snarky and accuse u of trollin

Where in this thread is the handy link to nabisco's review?
Guess I will have to provide it: http://nymag.com/arts/popmusic/reviews/70822/

"I suspect it’s the best and most recommendable thing Bejar’s done."
Get a clue, Nitsuh. It's a great record but just because you're jumping on the bandwagon 10 years too late doesn't mean you can proclaim the above bullsh*t.CloseBY SALEEN on 01/24/2011 at 10:23 pm

I didn't realize Bejar stans were so territorial.

Hey, I've been listening to Bejar for a decade, and I also wrote in my review that it's arguably his best album too. Give him benefit of the doubt here.
― rihanna rennavated my dick (rennavate), Thursday, 17 February 2011 21:12 (fifteen years ago)
in his review he talks abt how this is the first bejar album hes listened to
― just sayin, Thursday, 17 February 2011 21:13 (fifteen years ago)
He did say he "suspected" so I don't see what the problem is.

Ok never mind. Haven't read the article since he first published it.

the other night in my dream, they rereleased this album, but with William Shatner doing all the vocals
― peter in montreal, Thursday, 17 February 2011 21:42 (fifteen years ago)
wld probably still be listenable
― on some outer space shit (bernard snowy), Thursday, 17 February 2011 21:50 (fifteen years ago)
no no, it isn't! and i didn't review it without going back and listening to the others again, either. i'm just getting worse and worse at communicating clearly. i'd heard bejar plenty, just never really delved into the stuff until last year or so.
― oɔsıqɐu (nabisco), Sunday, 20 February 2011 00:06 (fifteen years ago)

― Paradife Loft (diamonddave85), Sunday, 20 February 2011 00:09 (fifteen years ago)
woops! i read that review when it was first published, and shld have re-read it before writing my comment. you communicated fine! it was just my memory
― just sayin, Sunday, 20 February 2011 09:09 (fifteen years ago)
I've finally gotten around to hearing this, & think it's really great---a creative & worthwhile post, I know, but I doubt I'd have checked this out without ILM, since Rubies never sunk in for me & I'd ignored him since, & so I figured I'd chime in positively on this thread before it goes kaputt again.
― Euler, Sunday, 20 February 2011 18:41 (fifteen years ago)
Bejar is making his tv debut on Jimmy Fallon on the 22nd. should be interesting!
― i love it when a suggest ban comes together (cajunsunday), Sunday, 20 February 2011 18:45 (fifteen years ago)
Thanks for those who mentioned Blue Nile _Hats_. I'm definitely going to check that out now.
― o. nate, Tuesday, 22 February 2011 03:29 (fifteen years ago)
good performance. for some reason i had imagined the musicians he worked with to be older, like old studio hacks. went skiing yesterday & slept 15 hours last night & the song (downtown) hit me a lot harder than it ever has before
― flopson, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 15:58 (fifteen years ago)
kinda disappointed he didn't piggyback ride fallon

http://stereogum.com/645022/watch-destroyers-tv-debut-on-fallon/video/
a friend of mine once suggested that if you used certain parts of the Internet to gauge what was deplorable to humanity, you would come up with a list that ran (1) genocide, (2) rape, (3) liking things other people can guess that you like, and (4) murder. This person also guessed that I would like the band Destroyer.
is this an ilxor?

I like how Bejar seems sorta nervous at first but then gets into it as he goesand the way it basically turns into smooth-jazz freakout at the end
― on some outer space shit (bernard snowy), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 20:15 (fifteen years ago)
yeah really looking forward to the show in dc w/ the war on drugs opening.
― Moreno, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 20:17 (fifteen years ago)
HmSaying that it's his "Best Album", when it is such a remarkable stylistic shiftMay make the faithful claim that such a statement would negate the other gems in the crownBut that's not really the case, is it?
― Odult Ariented Rock (Ówen P.), Thursday, 24 February 2011 00:43 (fifteen years ago)
i really don't think this album is *that* radical a shift for bejar. i think he's ultimately like leonard cohen, where his own persona dominates, no matter what musical setting you put him in.
― tylerw, Thursday, 24 February 2011 03:57 (fifteen years ago)
xp nope, it was like opening pandora's box for me. pretty good marketing innit

Two bass players in that performance! One on either side of the drums.

i didn't really like the tv performance.
― gr8080, Saturday, 26 February 2011 00:55 (fifteen years ago)
it sucks--he's not good live, i fear (saw them live once)
― Iago Galdston, Saturday, 26 February 2011 00:55 (fifteen years ago)
the music on this album should exist only on this album and never be reproduced ever
― gr8080, Saturday, 26 February 2011 01:24 (fifteen years ago)
yer nuts, horn shit was awesome imo
bejar painfully shy afterwards, was kind of endearing
― it made me wish batman had written an article on mfas (Edward III), Saturday, 26 February 2011 02:16 (fifteen years ago)
i saw dan b when frog eyes backed him on the your blues tour. great show. he bowed after every song . . . rarely seen someone so appreciative of his audience
― reggie (qualmsley), Saturday, 26 February 2011 02:19 (fifteen years ago)
I like how Bejar seems sorta nervous at first
he is crazy uncomfortable onstage and often gets drunk to fight it. when he plays w/ New Pornographers usually comes out to sing carrying a pint.
I'm the total opposite, wasn't really thinking of going to Webster Hall in April but now I'm gonna see if there's still tickets. My wife can heckle (still hates this record).
― dmr, Saturday, 26 February 2011 02:47 (fifteen years ago)
Haha, yeah last time I saw the New Pornos and Dan was there he was absolutely tanked. I couldn't believe that they played, and he made it through, "A Testament To Youth In Verse" and "Chump Change."
― Du Musst Calamari Werden (Phil D.), Saturday, 26 February 2011 03:02 (fifteen years ago)
ecch I really dislike 'rubies', not sure about 'your blues'. What are the good new pornos songs w/ bejar?
