Not sure if you are being sarcastic or not, but the much maligned album by Animal Collective that was all over year-end lists two years ago, much to the ire of many ilxors. It was part of the dreaded GAPDY poll result axis of evil.

there's no way, merriweather was almost universally acclaimed. this one's been pretty lukewarm

acclaimed by critics and fans alike, I should say

I was mostly being sarcastic with my prediction, just playing off the early year record gets tons of buzz only to have people turn on it by the end of the year.

Hey, I've been listening to Bejar for a decade, and I also wrote in my review that it's arguably his best album too. Give him benefit of the doubt here.

no no, it isn't! and i didn't review it without going back and listening to the others again, either. i'm just getting worse and worse at communicating clearly. i'd heard bejar plenty, just never really delved into the stuff until last year or so.

I've finally gotten around to hearing this, & think it's really great---a creative & worthwhile post, I know, but I doubt I'd have checked this out without ILM, since Rubies never sunk in for me & I'd ignored him since, & so I figured I'd chime in positively on this thread before it goes kaputt again.

Bejar is making his tv debut on Jimmy Fallon on the 22nd. should be interesting!

good performance. for some reason i had imagined the musicians he worked with to be older, like old studio hacks. went skiing yesterday & slept 15 hours last night & the song (downtown) hit me a lot harder than it ever has before

and the way it basically turns into smooth-jazz freakout at the end

May make the faithful claim that such a statement would negate the other gems in the crown
But that's not really the case, is it?

i really don't think this album is *that* radical a shift for bejar. i think he's ultimately like leonard cohen, where his own persona dominates, no matter what musical setting you put him in.

i saw dan b when frog eyes backed him on the your blues tour. great show. he bowed after every song . . . rarely seen someone so appreciative of his audience

I'm the total opposite, wasn't really thinking of going to Webster Hall in April but now I'm gonna see if there's still tickets. My wife can heckle (still hates this record).

Haha, yeah last time I saw the New Pornos and Dan was there he was absolutely tanked. I couldn't believe that they played, and he made it through, "A Testament To Youth In Verse" and "Chump Change."

ecch I really dislike 'rubies', not sure about 'your blues'. What are the good new pornos songs w/ bejar?
