Destroyer - Kaputt (2011)

Like this fine but prefer lots of other Destroyer albums or any Denim album.

Oh man, "Laziest River" is fantastic.

It's cool. It's the best thing on it, but it's not quite on it.

Well, it's not on my (digital) copy, so I'm just now listening to it via that blog post.

Anyone know whether/when this will get a UK release?

I do find it oddly fascinating that apparently so many folks (myself included) that have never particularly liked Destroyer do like this one a lot. It'd be really funny if everyone that liked Destroyer before hated this one, and everyone that didn't liked it. Like, a total 180.

it is interesting because i don't really hear the songwriting being all that different here -- i can imagine all the songs being done in one of the earlier styles. but yeah, must have something to do with the instrumentation/style of singing.

Wow, "The Laziest River" is like the score from "Rain Man" crossed with Tangerine Dream's "Risky Business" score. It's great.

Oh, and "Love is a Battlefield."

You know who (predictably) hates this album? Jim DeRogatis.

Man, that "Laziest River" is killing me. Now hearing "Eyes Without a Face," Blue Nile ... how did this not make the album? Just too long? How is it presented on the LP? As its own side?

Ha, I just listened to that, and Kot mentioned Blue Nile's "Hats," which is exactly what I had in mind.

(And for what it's worth, I've seen Destroyer live with Greg before, and we spent much of the set making fun of it. Count him another convert, I guess.)

as far as i'm concerned, the LP is the definitive version of this album
laziest river makes all the difference. it's definitely not a bonus track, unless you also consider bay of pigs a bonus track

Not sure if you are being sarcastic or not, but the much maligned album by Animal Collective that was all over year-end lists two years ago, much to the ire of many ilxors. It was part of the dreaded GAPDY poll result axis of evil.

there's no way, merriweather was almost universally acclaimed. this one's been pretty lukewarm

Hey, I've been listening to Bejar for a decade, and I also wrote in my review that it's arguably his best album too. Give him benefit of the doubt here.

no no, it isn't! and i didn't review it without going back and listening to the others again, either. i'm just getting worse and worse at communicating clearly. i'd heard bejar plenty, just never really delved into the stuff until last year or so.

I've finally gotten around to hearing this, & think it's really great---a creative & worthwhile post, I know, but I doubt I'd have checked this out without ILM, since Rubies never sunk in for me & I'd ignored him since, & so I figured I'd chime in positively on this thread before it goes kaputt again.

Bejar is making his tv debut on Jimmy Fallon on the 22nd. should be interesting!

Thanks for those who mentioned Blue Nile _Hats_. I'm definitely going to check that out now.
