I guess if they're going to go "subtle"* I'd rather they do so like "Go To Sleep" or "I Will" rather than... um I can't even match In Rainbows song titles to the songs, which one is the one in 6/8?
* this seems like a very odd word to use in conjunction with Radiohead
― DJP, Monday, 14 February 2011 17:59 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah A Punchup isn't really *subtle* as such, more 'incremental', brooding, and eventually spectacular
― acoleuthic, Monday, 14 February 2011 18:02 (thirteen years ago) link
I listened to In Rainbows in the downstairs part of the library for the first time, bunking off a morning lesson as I was so excited. The chills lasted the entire day.
I would've ranked it as no2 behind Kid A across their discography.
― Davek (davek_00), Monday, 14 February 2011 18:04 (thirteen years ago) link
Punchup is the worst song on any Radiohead album, it's just plodding.
I predict this record will sound nothing like dubstep, either dubstep proper or some kind of James Blake indiestep. It would feel like too obvious a move.
― Matt DC, Monday, 14 February 2011 18:05 (thirteen years ago) link
hmmm...i...agree with lj!
― bows don't kill people, arrows do (Jordan), Monday, 14 February 2011 18:06 (thirteen years ago) link
I hate Punchup too actually. My jam on HTTT was always Where I End And You Begin..
― Davek (davek_00), Monday, 14 February 2011 18:07 (thirteen years ago) link
What? No! "Punchup" is fucking great!
At any rate nothing is worse than everything on Pablo Honey that isn't "Creep"
― DJP, Monday, 14 February 2011 18:07 (thirteen years ago) link
or "Blow Out" or "Stop Whispering"
― acoleuthic, Monday, 14 February 2011 18:08 (thirteen years ago) link
(There are too many songs on HTTT that compete for favorite song from that album for me, which is another reason why it's my favorite Radiohead album.)
― DJP, Monday, 14 February 2011 18:08 (thirteen years ago) link
xp I don't know about proper predictions, but it just seems likely to me that they'll respond in their own way to 00s dubstep the way they did to 90s IDM.
Either way, I like how we've had barely any pointers or hints about its direction. Such a surprise when we hit play I guess..
― Davek (davek_00), Monday, 14 February 2011 18:09 (thirteen years ago) link
god yeah, where to start? 2+2=5 is one of the best opening tracks qua opening tracks of the 00's and it keeps on being amazing from there onwards
― acoleuthic, Monday, 14 February 2011 18:10 (thirteen years ago) link
xp: last time we got this level of surprise, I hated the album
― DJP, Monday, 14 February 2011 18:10 (thirteen years ago) link
i'm hoping for a heavily electronic album that's influenced by all the recent shit they've been listening to, but i really doubt that's what we're getting.
― bows don't kill people, arrows do (Jordan), Monday, 14 February 2011 18:11 (thirteen years ago) link
xp I dunno, I was geeking out on live tracks they played on the 2006 tour, so actually the only proper surprise for me with IR was hearing how they'd sound all recorded, mixed and sequenced.
The Citizen Insane thing upthread could give us some hints, if we're inclined that way..

there is no format that can realistically compete with CDs in terms of sound quality
Any MP3 over 192kbps is fine with me.

From wikipedia
The name of the new album relates to an oak tree in Wiltshire’s Savernake Forest, thought to be around 1,000 years old.[4] The forest lies around three miles away from Tottenham House, a listed country house where Radiohead recorded part of In Rainbows. The tree is a pollarded oak, referring to an ancient technique for harvesting timber for fencing and firewood. The phrase also appears in the 23rd chapter of the Qur'an.[2]

$15 for .wav files is such bs.
― Fastnbulbous, Monday, 14 February 2011 18:42 (thirteen years ago) link
I can't find any reference to the 'King of Limbs' in the Qur'an because there isn't one. Whoever wrote that got confused. After searching for 'King of Limbs' via google, they probably arrived at a [1] wikipedia page about the Qur'an which mentions a commentator 'Ibn Kathir' who used the term to expand on a verse. He described the heart as being 'the king of limbs' while explaining his understanding of the Qur'anic term 'Al-Khushoo'.
The site of al-Khushoo is in the heart and heart is the king of the limbs, so if one intends to pray wholeheartedly the limbs will follow the heart.

― Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 14 February 2011 19:15 (thirteen years ago) link
Yeah that seems pretty expensive considering the mp3s are only $9; does it really cost $6 more in bandwidth to transfer? Come on man
― frogbs, Monday, 14 February 2011 19:17 (thirteen years ago) link
uncompressed wavs are admittedly pretty giant
― bows don't kill people, arrows do (Jordan), Monday, 14 February 2011 19:18 (thirteen years ago) link
Wikipedia says the average price paid for In Rainbows was £4 (based on a survey of 3,000), and I was sure I saw somewhere else that the average was $5... Regardless, it seems inaccurate to assume they came up with those prices from In Rainbows data
― Fellini.Kuti, Monday, 14 February 2011 19:20 (thirteen years ago) link
just looking at the files for one song on my record here - the 320kpbs mp3 version is 10.8 mb, and the wav version is 47.9 mb
