Magic City (ano ano), Monday, 7 March 2005 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Their new record will be their best.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 7 March 2005 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

The new (full band) songs seem like a combination of what made Sung Tongs and HCTI great....the restless insanity of the latter and the pop sensibilities/tribal intensity of the former...though I did see them recently at the Bowery and felt that it was a little flat, the two NY shows that they played at the end of 2004 (with the same songs) were incredible

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

gygax otm

details are they recorded three songs with vashti in england last spring I think. They were three songs they had left over from the sung tongs era. Fat Cat is releasing it as an ep in may or something. They should have them for sale on their april tour.

Magic City (ano ano), Monday, 7 March 2005 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Any idea if the Vashti Bunyan EP is going to be a tour only thing, or widely available?

Mickey (modestmickey), Monday, 7 March 2005 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

it'll be out on fat cat in may

naturemorte, Monday, 7 March 2005 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 09:45 (twenty-one years ago)

wow that sounds amazing

owen reading, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 10:29 (twenty-one years ago)

It is a great EP, short (15 minutes) and sweet, and her voice works v. well w/ what they're doing.

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yeah, for those who were looking for song ID's from that live set from may of last year (acoustic, mostly sung-tongs stuff)--at least two of the segments from that show, as much as i can gather, will be on the ep-- "it's you" ("it's still growing...") and the lovable jingle about that friendly brother, the cat, whose only friend is the food bowl. "i remember learning how to drive" i think is the last song they played at the other music instore half a year ago. i thought it was "i remember learning how to dive" when i heard it, a la "what about bob".

naturemorte, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

AC&Vashti, DFA&Liquid Liquid, Jack White&Loretta Lynn.. what is it with bands nowadays working with musicians they wish they were?

Ok ok i know, Ramones & Spector. But still, sheesh. What's next the Flaming Lips and Syd Barrett?

Adam Bruneau (oliver8bit), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Why is this a problem?

Magic City (ano ano), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I think this is the right idea.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

i think its an OK idea in this case, but sort of boring in general. it rubs me slightly wrong the same way all of these reunions have (except unrest! unrest is the best! except unrest! unrest is the best!). i dont know, obv this isnt a cash cow, per se, but these things just scream "one-off" and "interesting career asterisk". those things arent intrinsically bad, i guess. they make me feel weird, though.

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

what's up with artists working with people they admire?! i don't get it!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

nothing wrong with it - guest appearances just seem gimmicky to me sometimes. actually, maybe thats a little rockist of me.

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I think they did it right in this case, though. Four little songs and the pairing makes sense.

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

fair enough - i cant wait to hear it, regardless - just makes me really REALLY want a new proper LP. again, rockism rockism rockism.

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't worry they are recording the new lp even as we speak!!! uh, type.

Magic City (ano ano), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

What's next the Flaming Lips and Syd Barrett?

let's hope so. their collab. with spongebob squarepants was garbage.

eman (eman), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't get it either, weirdoes.

what's up w.working w.artists who are artistically strapped?

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 10 March 2005 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

this ep's pretty good, though i like the instrumental "baleen sample" the most. not as good as sung tongs.

eman (eman), Thursday, 17 March 2005 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

the new Ariel Pink is fucking dope

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 17 March 2005 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I love that cover of 'I just called to say I love you' they were doing live this past tour. They said they'll probably record it, as it's part of some longer original material they have. But yeah, as gygaz mentioned above and magic city seconded, their next record is bound to be amazing, judging from the recent live stuff.

Kevin H (Kevin H), Thursday, 17 March 2005 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

could somebody yousendit that animal collective live show for me? pretty please?

Rizzx, Thursday, 17 March 2005 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

in SF/Oakland, they didn't really cover "i just called to say I love you", they just inserted the chorus once into one of their songs. It was all of about 30 seconds maybe.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 17 March 2005 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

That's too bad- they really stretched it out when they played in Philly (right before Thanksgiving). Also, above, I meant 'gygax' not gygaz. finger-slip. I guess the new album will be out, what- late summer/early fall, maybe?

Kevin H (Kevin H), Friday, 18 March 2005 00:27 (twenty-one years ago)

They are in the studio now so probably later this year. The "swimming pool" song will be on there if you remember that one.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 18 March 2005 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I do remember 'swimming pool'- that one's pretty great. I hope they do another live album too, at some point...

Kevin H (Kevin H), Friday, 18 March 2005 01:23 (twenty-one years ago)

it's funny to hear vashti sing "i was hiiiiiiiii-IIIIIIIGH"

amon (eman), Monday, 21 March 2005 00:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh shit. This Vashti collaboration is great.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

yes

who's asking? (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

its true - i was skeptical, but its very very good, esp "i remember...".

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 04:12 (twenty-one years ago)

it is really ravishing, a best-case scenario for those two forces combining and each being undiminished . . . . yummy

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 04:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I really wish I hadn't paid attention to the lyrics of the title track, they're so fucking twee that I can't bear to listen again.

amon (eman), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 04:46 (twenty-one years ago)

three months pass...
Should have paid more attention to this thread much earlier. 'Here Comes the Indian' is stunning, a revelation.

I didn't realise the Jane, responsible for the magnificent 'Bezerker', was a AC spin-off either.

stevo (stevo), Thursday, 14 July 2005 09:33 (twenty years ago)

that stevie wonder line won't be found on the new album, word up.

Beta (abeta), Thursday, 14 July 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

Really? That's surprising. That little 'I just Called to say I love you' interpolation was one of the coolest and most surprising things about that song (Big Big Beat, don't know what the studio name is). So have you heard it then, the recorded version?

Kevin H (Kevin H), Saturday, 23 July 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

i'm not too surprised the "i just called to say i love you" bit isn't on the album; they'd probably have to credit stevie wonder for it (and lose some royalties in the process) or risk a lawsuit. (oh, i'm pretty sure "big big beat" is now called "the purple bottle" on the album because there's a line about a bottle if you listen to some of the live recordings out there.)

spastic heritage, Sunday, 24 July 2005 09:09 (twenty years ago)

so has this leaked yet?

rizzx (rizzx), Sunday, 24 July 2005 09:15 (twenty years ago)

But in the live recordings, the 'bottle' line is in the "I just called to say I love you" section, so if that's been removed, I don't see any real compelling reason that they would name the song 'the purple bottle'. They could have just as well named it 'Bees'. x-post

And no, I don't think it's leaked yet.

Kevin H (Kevin H), Sunday, 24 July 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

well, this is all guesswork here. we'll see what it sounds like when the album comes out or gets leaked (if you're impatient). personally, i'm going to wait until october for it to be released since i already know it will be excellent, based on the new material i've seen them play. that "swimming pool" song ("banshee beat" on the lp) is SO FUCKING GOOD.

spastic heritage, Sunday, 24 July 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
hi people, what is the name of the song with the lyric:
"self doubt, i'll doubt i'll find a swimming pool"... or something similar?

-- gygax! (gygax0...), August 30th, 2004 9:20 AM. (gygax!)

"banshee beat"!

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

and wow, it kicks asssssss

Fetchboy (Felcher), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

I liked Sung Tongs, but this new record is seriously just one big "WTF"

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

...?

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

yeah, "wtf" in what way? i find it more straightforward than any of their previous records.

Fetchboy (Felcher), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

it sounds very, very much like their recent live shows (past year or so) with a lot of that material being present on the record. much more spastic/electric than sung tongs. sort of 'same-y' at times.

b'angelo, Wednesday, 10 August 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

i find it more straightforward than any of their previous records.

Really? It sounds almost like a completely diferrent band to me, there's nothing as immediate as "Leaf House" or "Who Could Win a Rabbit" (though I did like "Grass" a bit, but even that was just a total headfuck), there's so much going on, the vocals sound really different... the production is odd.. it's a lot noiseier... it's just not what I expected, that's all.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

has it leaked then? what's the title?

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)
