I miss Geir

a CHAMPAGNE supernova

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

he's posted like once or twice since he was disappeared by the rhythm nation. I keep hoping (heh, fearing) it'll be more than a cameo, but nothing yet.

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Like a supernova, he appeared before us, luminous and awesome, and then just as quickly he disappeared.
...and came close to annihilating everything around him...

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

this struck me as geir-esque albeit even more trolly and unapprised.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think Geir was ever trolly.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
Whats A.M.A? And what did Geir do in 1995? (height of Britpop wasnt it?)

Rickshawman, Friday, 29 August 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

alt.music.alternative

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 29 August 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Usually, Latin American music is able to combine rhythm and melody in a great way.

This is sensible enough.

Al Andalous (Al Andalous), Friday, 29 August 2003 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i remember an AMA argument, where someone pointed out that david gilmour's guitar playing in "shine on, you crazy diamond" was largely blues-based -- this was after geir had said something about pink floyd's alleged "european" melodies and that they worked in the "european classical" tradition or something like that. gilmour's guitar playing on "SOYCD" was brought up to counter that assertion, and most AMA'ers agreed. except geir, who kept sputtering on and on not only about pink floyd's adherence to "european" musical forms but that gilmour's guitar playing on "SOYCD" was also "european."

i didn't know what to make of geir's "arguments" then -- i still don't five years later, to be honest with you.

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 29 August 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I like having Geir back. He never was a troll, merely, um.. opinionated. But he's one of those folks who, you know, makes you appreciate your own views more by disagreeing with them.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Saturday, 30 August 2003 07:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm confident enough in my tastes without needing a geir as a foil. i suspect this is true of many other ilm posters.

amateurist (amateurist), Saturday, 30 August 2003 07:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually no, Amateurist, how about you stop pathetically badgering a guy who does no harm to anyone and leave it be?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 30 August 2003 07:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm nineteen years old with a mouth full of gold.

d k (d k), Saturday, 30 August 2003 08:26 (twenty-two years ago)

''i'm confident enough in my tastes without needing a geir as a foil.''

good for you. like Geir you also have all the anwers.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 30 August 2003 10:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio - let's have it, what's your problem with Amateurist? You seem to have been following him round board picking up little niggles and copy-pasting them then dismissing them. It's kinda bullying, even if Ama is a strong and intelligent and possibly-not-bothered contestant.

(I don't know if I should be openly asking for this to be aired ["oh no! 900 new answers by morning!! OH NO!!!"] but I think it's healthy to have it out instead of all these asides and snidey glances.)

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 30 August 2003 10:10 (twenty-two years ago)

the damn outbursts for one.

I mean, i like him a lot and sorry for picking but what the hell is it with that comment (and most of the anti-geir stuff by some of the other posters, I mean he has only come back yesterday and ppl are already going bonkers over that).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 30 August 2003 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

OK apologies to amt. I should ignore that stuff too.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 30 August 2003 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

geir is daft as a brush, but i'm pleased to have him back.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Saturday, 30 August 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

We miss Geir when he's gone, and then after a few repetitions of the "this isn't music because it's not melodic" meme the charm begins to wear off.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Saturday, 30 August 2003 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

HG is classic.
As are the Beatles ;-)

mei (mei), Sunday, 31 August 2003 08:37 (twenty-two years ago)

two months pass...
so classic it hurts

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 22 November 2003 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

2 years...

elwisty (elwisty), Sunday, 17 April 2005 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Waves of 1995 nostalgia wash over me.
Dogme 95? Lars von Trier? Dancer in the Dark? How Scandinavian of me!

Ian Riese-Moraine. To Hell with you and your gradual evolution! (Eastern Mantra), Sunday, 17 April 2005 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Geir is a goddamn genius.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Sunday, 17 April 2005 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a hongro, hongro world.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 17 April 2005 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic. I disagree with most of what Geir says, but I will defend to the death his right to say it.

Failin Huxley (noodle vague), Sunday, 17 April 2005 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, maybe not to the death.

Failin Huxley (noodle vague), Sunday, 17 April 2005 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic! :)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 17 April 2005 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I will defend to Geir's death his right to say what he says.

Masked Gazza, Sunday, 17 April 2005 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

WAS Classic, because it's good to have a viewpoint which is so much at odds with whatever passes for a consensus round here. Fly in the ointment and all that. Also Classic for a) good taste in Italo-disco, b) "Talking To A Computer", c) never, EVER, resorting to rudeness to make his points.

NOW, sorry to say, veering towards Dud, because I keep reading the exact same points being made over and over again, in thread after thread after thread. Which wouldn't bug me, except that sometimes potentially new and interesting threads get sidetracked and shunted back into the same old arguments.

Sorry Geir, nothing personal.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Sunday, 17 April 2005 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Mike, people have been complaining to Geir about that for what, 10 years now?

The Ghost of deX! (Dan Perry), Sunday, 17 April 2005 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

10 years?! So this discussion has been going on somewhere before ILM started off?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 17 April 2005 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Tuomas: This thread was started about half a year before I made my first post on ILM :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 17 April 2005 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

A look back in time...

(with special appearances by NED RAGGETT, NATE PATRIN and DAN PERRY as "Lord of deXness")

(Matt Parisi used to post here, didn't he?)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 17 April 2005 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I was trying to say "Classic" but he forces me to say "Dud"

Ken L (Ken L), Sunday, 17 April 2005 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry dan i just saw the name 'andy garcia' on an internet message board and laffed my arse off

Michael B, Sunday, 17 April 2005 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Geir Hongro paused from a brief respite of crack-smoking and listening =

to Yes to write:

Mr. Patrin, I salute you across a decade.

(Is this as good a time as any to say that I still feel like I'm in my late teens/early twenties in many ways? It's remarkably freeing!)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 17 April 2005 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)
