PULP - "Do You Remember the First Time?" (350 points, 22 votes)

comments on this 'un?

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 8 November 2004 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

If 'This Is Hardcore' is the eye of the storm, then 'Do You Remember The First Time?' is perhaps Pulp's eye of the duck.

"Oh Jesus it must be great, to be straight"

Alba (Alba), Monday, 8 November 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

(I think I prefer 'Lipgloss', but still)

Alba (Alba), Monday, 8 November 2004 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually think this is one of their weaker singles, but I must trumpet the BRILLIANCE of these lines, some of the very best Jarvis has ever written:
You say you've never been sure,
though it makes good sense for you to be together.
Still you bought a toy that can reach the places he never goes.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 8 November 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, the bitterness implicit in the casually tossed off "It makes good sense for you to live together" line is great, yeah. I think it's the chorus that lets it down, maybe. It never meant that much to me.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 8 November 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

(So far the best part of this thread is the bit upthread where half the readers were saying, "We shouldn't post lists to this thread" and the other half were all "HERE'S MY TOP TEN RANKED BY ABILITY TO MELT STILTON")

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 8 November 2004 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I really can't believe "C.R.E.A.M." was this low. It was my #2.

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Monday, 8 November 2004 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

CREAM was in my top five, I think. "TROY" was my number two. Blah.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 8 November 2004 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

be grateful they're there at all, not sure mine will be

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Monday, 8 November 2004 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

ditto (my top 5 at least, a good number of my picks have shown up)

miccio (miccio), Monday, 8 November 2004 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

"Do You Remember the First Time?" is a great single but it might not even be one of their ten best of the decade.

I guess we still have "Babies," "Disco 2000" and "Common People" at least to go before the list's end. We might only have "He's on the Phone" left from St. Etienne, at least.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Monday, 8 November 2004 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey Jelousy Top 50! Could we be so lucky!

danh (danh), Monday, 8 November 2004 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

No, we really couldn't. I was hoping for 80s, 70s abs. tops.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Monday, 8 November 2004 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, it's not happening.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Monday, 8 November 2004 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry for the delay. I'm on someone else's computer at work (they forgot to give me one of my own!) Tonight I'll continue posting, argh

"Makes me wanna fuck shit up. It brings up the violent side of me, that needs to be released once in a while, in order to be tamed. I am sometimes a difficult person to deal with, but, alas, it is just the demons trying to get out."
--JP Almeida

Is this definitely in praise of 'Cherub Rock'.

I've read this way back on the thread and I'm still laughing...

oh, and yes, Alba, it was in praise of "Cherub Rock" (though in a dysfunctional kind of way). I completely forgot I wrote this, but I stand by it.

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Monday, 8 November 2004 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Also I completely stand behind the comments quoted from me, esp. the "Pictures Of You" comment.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 8 November 2004 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Woof.
Well, I've only seen SEVEN of my choices (and none lower than #71!) so I either voted with the masses or against them.
Put votes in for "Pictures of You" and "Shook Ones".
Retrospectively wish I'd voted higher for "The Rain" "Creep" "Sour Times" and ESPECIALLY "TROY" (fifteen was WAY too low).
"Halcyon" was my number three.
Corny FUXX alert: the remainder of my top two were "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Are You That Somebody?"
Bonus points to those who can guess the order of those two.

AALIYAH - "One In A Million" (356 points, 15 votes)

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00018QJ88.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

The original Aaliyah "One in a Million" changed the face of American pop music. Since its release it has been on my top ten. I remember freaking all my Berkeley friends out listening to it (granted, it was about 1000 times in a row and they were used to hearing MBV blaring).

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm guessing that comment was about the album, rather than 'Fade Into You' itself. Maybe not though!

WHITE TOWN - "Your Woman" (356 points, 19 votes)

I just wonder if Momus sat sulking in the ICA cafe the day White Town hit no.1 with 'Your Woman' ?

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 01:17 (twenty-one years ago)

All right, that's the first song to make the main 90's AND the OMGWTFLOL list!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 01:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Hang on, "Your Woman" wasn't on the OMGWTFLOL list. Only in my mind.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

The ties can form som interesting juxtapositions. Maybe someone should try a mashup of them...

[insert righteous anger over low placement of one-in-a-million here]

Fukkit.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Here's more Aaliyah "One In A Million" commentary from that thread:

When the Aaliyah track came out, it seemed like US R&B, an incredibly popular yet seemingly closed (even moribund) system of production, had completely reinvented itself. The arrangement was totally unique, showcasing Timbaland's almost drum n bass approach to drum programming (although he denies having heard any dnb prior to recording this track). The eerie almost sci-fi sonics and slow bass with double time snare and hat fills directly influenced countless R&B and then hip-hop and pop releases. Aaliyah's later tracks are denser and more immediate, but "One In a Million" was quite a shot in the dark and made me reconsider R&B completely. I still think it's one of the 10 sexiest songs ever - actually it's just pure sex music of the highest order. It's also a kind of key to a clearer understanding of subsequent Timbaland productions.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

much better!

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:02 (twenty-one years ago)

insert righteous anger over low placement of one-in-a-million here

you're really unbelievable sometimes, Deej. Do you have any idea how unorthodoxly high a placement #48 is for a song like "One in a Million"? I'm shocked it even made it at all--I've never seen it make a 90s poll like this.

I swear, if Breaking Atoms was nominated and made #7 on the list, you'd be bitching about how it should've been top five.

I didn't vote for either "One in a Million" or "Fade Into You" (though I did vote for "Are You That Somebody?") but I'm very pleased to see both of them so high. They certainly deserve it. And "Your Woman" is still only sort of a good song.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

(I know I shouldn't advertise my ignorance, but who the hell is White Town?)

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:33 (twenty-one years ago)

(Yeah I was wondering that too.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Nevermind I just listened to the sample on Amazon. I remember this song. Blech.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:36 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post

I guess it's not fair to judge based on this, but I hate that smile face he uses. It's the kind that appears on forums with "avatars" and for some reason it always has the effect of getting me mad when someone uses it to try to be concilatory. Anyway, he was even on EMI briefly. How about that?

MY BLOODY VALENTINE - "To Here Knows When" (357 points, 19 votes, 2 first place votes)

This one right here is the tune that SOLD me on MBV, after several years of denial.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Halfway through and not one breakbeat-hardcore/jungle/rave track (unless you want to count Orbital.) Depressing.

As for Losing My Religion.. it's by far their best single, and the one that will probably be remembered best fifty years from now

Woo, Mazzy cracked the top 50.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 03:10 (twenty-one years ago)

haha Michael Stipe's such a poser. Wow, I regret that I hadn't heard "Gorecki" earlier.

MBV were pretty. That song is amazing.

I voted 'your woman' pretty high.

I think I lost my ballot, somewhere.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 03:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay MBV and R.E.M., boo B&S. I wonder if that's the last we're going to hear of them.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder.

Halfway through and not one breakbeat-hardcore/jungle/rave track
But there were basically no hardcore/rave tracks nominated.
The selection of techno, rave, and house on the albums list is far stronger than that on the singles list.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 03:26 (twenty-one years ago)

"Losing My Religion" s.u.c.k.s. I type this as I'm wearing an R.E.M. shirt, so I'm no hatah or whatever the kids call 'em.

That's my 18 (B&S) and my 19 (Magnetic fields) come up. I still don't know what to make of this poll so far - I guess it might make sense when it's over.
