Looking through the Jimmy Heath book and I see that he briefly mentions Ted D as somebody he knew from Jazzmobile. He also appears in "Appendix A: Unique Names," which is an incredibly long list of nicknames assigned by the Heath Brothers to other musicians, as "Texas Ted."

Ha, I think he still used virtually the same list when I was there. I kind of found it tedious, tbh. Also Freedom Jazz Dance is a real bitch to finger on guitar and I never quite found a good way.

Then maybe you should go up to Jazzmobile and study with Rick Stone!

I actually never quite understood his recommended practice routines. I mean "practicing" all of those tunes every day alone would take a few hours if you really did it. Then he'd have like three other books for you to practice out of, and you were supposed to do each thing in every key in every position on the fretboard, and it seemed like it would take 8 hours of FOCUSED practice to get through all that plus whatever was assigned for combos and improv classes and such. And I just did not have that kind of focus.

I know what you mean. Obviously you've gotta practice a lot and practice stuff on a regular basis, but to give people a giant list of stuff and say you've gotta practice this giant list every single day seems like it would be demoralizing to everybody but the most fanatical student. Which some might say is the point but still. Actually I saw the other guy for a few seconds this evening but didn't really talk to him. Next time I will ask whether he practiced all of that every single day.

Yes I would really like to know that. I think that was actually a big contributing factor in never getting further along in music was that demoralization.

If you hang around with some Jazz guitarists you might find that a reasonable number of them actively dislike rock guitar, both the notes that are played and the effects they are played through. You might even here somebody say "These kids ruined music!" Which is fine if the disliker is over 60 but is really kind of weird when they are under 50. (Which ultimately might cause somebody else who does listen to rock to say that they hate Jazz guitar in return.) Some might actually cover it up by picking a few players to appreciate-"Oh yeah, I like Jimi Hendrix!" - but that's about as far as it goes. I'm sure somebody will say I made this up, but I assure you this strawman exists.

This is absolutely 100% true. I've been in on many of these conversations, and this attitude spans generations (though isn't as prevalent with younger players).

Charles Shaar Murray, in his brilliant Hendrix book Crosstown Traffic, had a great line about how if some homicidal time-traveler were to strangle at birth every jazz guitarist between Charlie Christian and Jimi Hendrix, the overall arc and development of the music as a whole wouldn't be any different.

In other news, apparently when Congress reauthorized the FAA a month ago, they made it clear that musical instruments were permitted as carry-on baggage so long as they fit in the compartment- you can see this on the TSA website, guitars and violins specifically mentioned- but I don't think the airline personnel have been informed, you still have to argue with them about this

Back to the other topic. You don't see this kind of thing too much with, say, bassists and drummers, they like themselves some funk too much, for one thing. Saxophonists though...
