If this ends up singlehandedly blocking Wiz from #1 I will be >:O

The Reverend, Thursday, 3 February 2011 20:15 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i don't even really like the wiz song much but a regular-ass rap song hitting #1 would be pretty cool, especially that song the week of the super bowl

hercudeez and nuts affair (some dude), Thursday, 3 February 2011 20:40 (fifteen years ago)

strange how this has become her most commercially relevant phase of her career

it makes sense, really: Pink has a kind of weathered, been-there, cool-big-sister appeal that gets better the longer she's around -- put her next to a bunch of young new stars and she sticks out as seeming wiser and more down-to-earth. "raise your glass" was perfect at grabbing the good will that creates -- all supportive and encouraging, like we'll all gather at Pink's feet and she'll, like, give us motherly advice about being awesome

oɔsıqɐu (nabisco), Thursday, 3 February 2011 20:52 (fifteen years ago)

yeah she's definitely a bit older than pretty much all her contemporaries (even with Britney there's a 2 year age gap) but she wears it well, still kind of bratty defiant but not increasingly ridiculous about as she gets older like Avril.

hercudeez and nuts affair (some dude), Thursday, 3 February 2011 21:06 (fifteen years ago)

cool-big-sister

That's easily the most succinct, accurate description of her appeal I've seen.

The Reverend, Thursday, 3 February 2011 21:08 (fifteen years ago)

my wife pointed out to me recently that my eldest female cousin looks/sounds slightly like Pink and i was like wow you're right, so that especially rings true for me

hercudeez and nuts affair (some dude), Thursday, 3 February 2011 21:26 (fifteen years ago)

Jessie J "Price Tag" went to #1 in Britain its first week, I don't think it will chart well here in America, it has this lazy and slow feeling that I don't think will translate.

Ivor, Monday, 7 February 2011 06:13 (fifteen years ago)

you sure about that? it's basically the same feel as "Billionaire," which was inescapable, plus it has B.o.B, and it'll probably do well in the "alternative to club songs" niche

katherine, Monday, 7 February 2011 07:07 (fifteen years ago)

aw man this might be massive

J0rdan S., Monday, 7 February 2011 07:09 (fifteen years ago)

train, jason mraz, bruno mars etc have had plenty of hits recently that sound like this

do the smeezingtons have anything to do with this? probably

J0rdan S., Monday, 7 February 2011 07:09 (fifteen years ago)

oh it's dr. luke? fuck it this is gonna be massive

J0rdan S., Monday, 7 February 2011 07:10 (fifteen years ago)

somehow this is worse than "do it like a dude" & i really didn't think that was possible

this chick is utterly & completely the worst

J0rdan S., Monday, 7 February 2011 07:11 (fifteen years ago)

I'll still stan for "Do it Like a Dude," but this is zzzzzzzz

Johnny Fever, Monday, 7 February 2011 07:16 (fifteen years ago)

It could go massive, but I don't think its success will fully translate to America. To me the song has this weird feel that doesn't match the tempo, it's trying to be a laid-back song but there's this relentless pulse that seems to be trying to make everything speed up. In Price Tag the bass and guitar suggest this languorous feeling that the vocals don't match. In comparison, Billionaire and similar songs seem more cohesive and at peace with the chill feeling.

Ivor, Tuesday, 8 February 2011 05:05 (fifteen years ago)

oh god PRs please don't pitch mike posner to me :(

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Tuesday, 8 February 2011 21:45 (fifteen years ago)

am i going to end up tolerating and even occasionally liking jessie j somewhere down the line like i now do with lady gaga? god i really hope not

teledyldonix, Wednesday, 9 February 2011 01:28 (fifteen years ago)

no

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 9 February 2011 01:52 (fifteen years ago)

yeah even when i didn't care for gaga (ca. first album) i still recognized a kernel of something that could be really great down the line

jessie j just flat-out sucks

Jomanda Hugankiss (donna rouge), Wednesday, 9 February 2011 02:51 (fifteen years ago)

heard "price tag" on the radio just now

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 9 February 2011 18:42 (fifteen years ago)

Pink Friday just pulled ahead of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy in total sales this week.

some dude, Thursday, 10 February 2011 04:35 (fifteen years ago)

makes sense -- still hear those songs all over the radio

J0rdan S., Thursday, 10 February 2011 04:36 (fifteen years ago)

also Nicki's at #1 and Kanye's at #22, gap's just gonna get wider.

some dude, Thursday, 10 February 2011 04:52 (fifteen years ago)

Ladies and gentlemen, a rappin'-ass rap song is #1 on the pop charts.

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Thursday, 10 February 2011 04:55 (fifteen years ago)

:/ at fucking "I Need a Doctor" going top 5 tho.

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Thursday, 10 February 2011 04:56 (fifteen years ago)

"black & yellow"? billboard site says it's bruno mars, maybe it hasn't updated yet?

lex pretend, Thursday, 10 February 2011 08:39 (fifteen years ago)

i find this hilarious btw - and surprising, even if pink friday is a way better album than most dismissed it as.

lex pretend, Thursday, 10 February 2011 08:41 (fifteen years ago)

and also, its entire "inspire the teenage girls" ethos really works, and lends uninspiring production choices an extra frisson of meaning - eg "moment 4 life" is only ok but it feels like there's something at stake in it.

lex pretend, Thursday, 10 February 2011 08:42 (fifteen years ago)

"Moment 4 Life" is good precisely because of the prodcution!

Cee Lo Green's former top 10 "F**k You (Forget You)" claims the Hot 100's Airplay Gainer Award, jumping 19-16. The song, which, as previously reported, reaches a new peak on the Pop Songs chart five months after its release, also rockets to a new highpoint (42-23) on Radio Songs (44 million, up 42%). Green is expected to perform the song with Gwyneth Paltrow Sunday (Feb. 13) at the 53rd Grammy Awards. Among its four nominations, "F**k You (Forget You)" is up for coveted record and song of the year honors.

this song is gonna go #1 here isn't it :'(

teledyldonix, Friday, 11 February 2011 01:15 (fifteen years ago)

very happy to see "black and yellow" get as high as it deserved though... but srsly get that horrible dre/eminem song off the charts now

teledyldonix, Friday, 11 February 2011 01:16 (fifteen years ago)

We are all the subjects of stargate

J0rdan S., Friday, 11 February 2011 01:59 (fifteen years ago)

teledyldonix, Thursday, 17 February 2011 18:11 (fifteen years ago)

J0rdan S., Thursday, 17 February 2011 18:13 (fifteen years ago)

don't forget the towering monolith of awfulness that is the "Deuces" remix

tellysavalas (some dude), Thursday, 17 February 2011 21:09 (fifteen years ago)

ha, heard that on the radio and audibly yelled "nooo"

J0rdan S., Thursday, 17 February 2011 22:01 (fifteen years ago)

Tinie Tempah is on the bubbling under chart. (Unfortunately not with "Pass Out", but with "Written in the Stars")

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Friday, 18 February 2011 01:06 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, i think they bought an itunes banner to promote the single. so fucking pissed that this is the single that will (presumably) get him noticed here

teledyldonix, Friday, 18 February 2011 07:22 (fifteen years ago)

I hope it at least means that we get "Pass Out" next.

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Friday, 18 February 2011 07:23 (fifteen years ago)

Or maybe something awesome and new.

banjee trillness (The Reverend), Friday, 18 February 2011 07:24 (fifteen years ago)

jessie j has broken the hot 100

this is just the beginning

teenage cream (J0rdan S.), Friday, 18 February 2011 21:17 (fifteen years ago)

i hope that one day when the books on 50 cent as a marketer AND viral marketing successes in music are written, that everyone remembers when 50 cent came on to dance to jeremih's "down on me" w/ some random internet dude in a video that now sits at 29 million views (http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=50+cent+down+on+me+keenan&aq=) in the process vaulting a jeremih song that no one cared about to one of the biggest rap/r&b hits of 2011

pop the s1ock (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 02:53 (fifteen years ago)

that's pretty weird! i've heard the song on the radio a lot for a while, though, don't know if that video really has anything to do w/ that.

some dude, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 03:19 (fifteen years ago)

idk if there's any way to check a song's billboard performance by a week but i'm almost positive that the song had a fairly large re-entry into the hot 100 (like into the 80s maybe) the week after that video dropped & has risen slowly to where it is now

pop the s1ock (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 03:22 (fifteen years ago)

yeah it's possible, i could see it getting a bump from that but it seemed somewhat pre-destined as a hit (at least moreso than any other recent Jeremih and/or 50 song) from the jump

some dude, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 03:34 (fifteen years ago)

that jeremih album was mad underrated around here, not a lot of possible singles like the first one (which is a classic) but i guess by virtue of having fiddy this one's a good choice. not one of my favorite songs from it tho

kl0p's son (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 03:58 (fifteen years ago)

http://acharts.us/song/58713

check the boxes for the "us singles top 100" (the hot 100) and "us airplay top 100" (hot 100 airplay) then click the "draw graph" thing to have it draw a pretty picture for you. to me it looks like a pretty typical chart trajectory: debuts, falls a little bit because initial sales begin to lag while airplay catches up, then eventually things align pretty well until it eventually peaks. that video was released november 8th, which was during billboard's sales tracking week going from the 8th to the 14th. for whatever strange reason, this corresponds to the chart dated november 27th, which is actually when the track debuted on the hot 100 at #67.

that said, i think that vid has definitely done something because i have at least one friend who only heard the song because of that video.

in other news, i am kind of shocked that a jennifer lopez song is in the upper reaches of the itunes singles chart right now.

teledyldonix, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 07:00 (fifteen years ago)

it was dormant for two months (on itunes in mid sept), video w/ famous internet star is posted, track debuts in the top 70 of the hot 100 = a pretty good case that the video made it a hit (or at least sparked it to be a hit)
