yeah that similar artists thing just looks like a random list of metal bands to me.

I mean they are similar in the sense of "these are bands that are also metal bands" but that's a pretty broad brushstroke

It's fun to be able to knock out tge only stuff on my ballot I thought might place on the first day (Harvey milk, third eye foundation and enslaved). Going to be a rough one from here on out though.

hehe this applies to me too (3EF, The Knife) and yeah, am hoping to make some cool discoveries but the top 50 is gonna be mostly other ppls business

btw I'd advise a listen for all those into prog, BM or noisy melodicism. if not then ymmv

yup. didn't vote for it, but easily might have. only means that i break ties by going with my sentimental favorites. glad metal cru got a couple in. still hoping for christian mistress & black breath, but prob foolishly.

lj re: the nat'l, try "afraid of everyone" (i'm in a meeting and am not tracking down links, sry to be difficult). one of the stronger melodies on the record imo.

Nothing has placed from my ballot yet, but a few things I like/am interested by have come up.

Looking over my ballot, there are two I'm almost definite will come up, about three or four I'd expect to see, and the rest I will eat my hat if they show up.

still can't read the BM acronym without thinking the person is into scat, yes I'm 12

basically to like the nat'l you have to

a) like dude's voice
b) agree they have a knack for simple but effective vocal melody
c) treat their wallpapery music as an aggressive aesthetic decision

I voted Harvey Milk and 3rd Eye Foundation, and liked The Knife. Need to listen to (most of) the others.

the people I've played that Quadron disc for have liked it so much that it's made me like it more, too. It's one of the discs this year that's associated with the happiest memories.

I voted the Christian Mistress record ~high as hell~ and enough others said good things about it that it wouldn't amaze me if it turned up in say the next five things on the countdown

The National's best album (and likely best entry point) was Alligator. imo they should've broken up immediately after it was released.

all good heuristics for guessing whether a particular individual likes the National, but not an explanation of why someone might like the national (unless you believe your skin color is what helps certain music sound good)

That said, there are enough neat production touches in The National that I can see why they'd be effective in certain situations. Just doesn't have much bite to it, it's got a kinda studied softness instead. As you said, really.

i haven't gone back to the national album a lot but i was really into it over the summer (and iirc, i voted for it on my ballot). there's a kind of epic desperation in the songs. esp love the "i still owe money to the money to the money i owe" which turns all my economic anxiety into something like a dirge.

i think we all rly need to meet for an irl drink, wd prevent these episodes
