btw as with the rihanna, nobody is leaping in the defence of the national.

to quote rihanna: I'll drink to that

metal yes but metal chock-full of TUNES

there are three enslaved albums better than that one, but it's still one of my favourites from 2010

charlie h, Monday, 31 January 2011 19:41 (fifteen years ago)

It's fun to be able to knock out tge only stuff on my ballot I thought might place on the first day (Harvey milk, third eye foundation and enslaved). Going to be a rough one from here on out though.

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Monday, 31 January 2011 19:42 (fifteen years ago)

that enslaved album is really really good

call all destroyer, Monday, 31 January 2011 19:43 (fifteen years ago)

jjj - your'e ahead of me. Nothing has placed from my ballot.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 31 January 2011 19:43 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah that list of similar artists is mostly wrong imo.

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Monday, 31 January 2011 19:43 (fifteen years ago)

there's one version w/ "fever ray" person on vox and another w/ the opera person that dominates the rest of the album

― the new mordant & zingy ilxor persona (ilxor), Monday, January 31, 2011 11:25 AM (8 minutes ago) Bookmark

have only heard the "opera person" version, love it.

re lj: checking "epochs". starting slow & low... god, i just LOVE the combo of operatic vocals and dark industrial drones. sudden dubstep!

don't get the dismissal of "seeds" though. takes its time, but eventually builds up quite a head of steam. love the housey boonka-boonk and doubled vocals towards the end. needs some ghetto bass, but other than that...

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Monday, 31 January 2011 19:43 (fifteen years ago)

yeah that similar artists thing just looks like a random list of metal bands to me.

charlie h, Monday, 31 January 2011 19:44 (fifteen years ago)

I mean they are similar in the sense of "these are bands that are also metal bands" but that's a pretty broad brushstroke

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Monday, 31 January 2011 19:45 (fifteen years ago)

hehe this applies to me too (3EF, The Knife) and yeah, am hoping to make some cool discoveries but the top 50 is gonna be mostly other ppls business

btw I'd advise a listen for all those into prog, BM or noisy melodicism. if not then ymmv

acoleuthic, Monday, 31 January 2011 19:45 (fifteen years ago)

Edward III must have an awesome Best Buy that hasn't yet been slashed down to one aisle of Top 40 only releases.

er, .com, still

yup. didn't vote for it, but easily might have. only means that i break ties by going with my sentimental favorites. glad metal cru got a couple in. still hoping for christian mistress & black breath, but prob foolishly.

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Monday, 31 January 2011 19:47 (fifteen years ago)

lj re: the nat'l, try "afraid of everyone" (i'm in a meeting and am not tracking down links, sry to be difficult). one of the stronger melodies on the record imo.

call all destroyer, Monday, 31 January 2011 19:48 (fifteen years ago)

Nothing has placed from my ballot yet, but a few things I like/am interested by have come up.

Looking over my ballot, there are two I'm almost definite will come up, about three or four I'd expect to see, and the rest I will eat my hat if they show up.

emil.y, Monday, 31 January 2011 19:48 (fifteen years ago)

still can't read the BM acronym without thinking the person is into scat, yes I'm 12

^ probably more bullshit self-aggrandizement and non-essential info (Edward III), Monday, 31 January 2011 19:48 (fifteen years ago)

basically to like the nat'l you have to

a) like dude's voice
b) agree they have a knack for simple but effective vocal melody
c) treat their wallpapery music as an aggressive aesthetic decision

call all destroyer, Monday, 31 January 2011 19:49 (fifteen years ago)

I voted Harvey Milk and 3rd Eye Foundation, and liked The Knife. Need to listen to (most of) the others.

Neil S, Monday, 31 January 2011 19:49 (fifteen years ago)

the people I've played that Quadron disc for have liked it so much that it's made me like it more, too. It's one of the discs this year that's associated with the happiest memories.

Dan S, Monday, 31 January 2011 19:50 (fifteen years ago)

xxp The National are like Tindersticks with all the rough edges sanded off IMO.

Neil S, Monday, 31 January 2011 19:50 (fifteen years ago)

I like the noisy melodicism of bowel movements

^ probably more bullshit self-aggrandizement and non-essential info (Edward III), Monday, 31 January 2011 19:50 (fifteen years ago)

aka the national

^ probably more bullshit self-aggrandizement and non-essential info (Edward III), Monday, 31 January 2011 19:50 (fifteen years ago)

checking the national - "afraid of everyone". lovely sound, but i think i just don't much like where they're coming from. dirge coldplay is not my thing.

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Monday, 31 January 2011 19:53 (fifteen years ago)

Things I think are *brilliant* out of that lot: T3EF, The Knife
Things I love out of that lot: Enslaved
Things I am *intrigued* by: Sun City Girls, Harvey Milk, Warpaint Sun Araw
Things I am interested to hear more of: Quadron, The Tallest Man On Earth, Kylie Minogue
Things I will check out later: The Radio Dept, No Age

all in all, fucken A

and now I listen to The National

acoleuthic, Monday, 31 January 2011 19:53 (fifteen years ago)

basically to like the nat'l you have to

a) like dude's voice
b) agree they have a knack for simple but effective vocal melody
c) treat their wallpapery music as an aggressive aesthetic decision

a) take NPR or Pitchfork's music recommendations seriously
b) enjoy boring indie bands like the Walkmen, Arcade Fire, Band of Horses and Wilco
c) you're white btw

the new mordant & zingy ilxor persona (ilxor), Monday, 31 January 2011 19:55 (fifteen years ago)

I voted the Christian Mistress record ~high as hell~ and enough others said good things about it that it wouldn't amaze me if it turned up in say the next five things on the countdown

Rogaine's a hell of a rug (DJ Mencap), Monday, 31 January 2011 19:55 (fifteen years ago)

the radio dept album so good. near the top of my ballot.

Mordy, Monday, 31 January 2011 19:55 (fifteen years ago)

hah this list is great

Jacka Laroo and Tyler Too (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 31 January 2011 19:56 (fifteen years ago)

feel like this would be a good time for any non-white enthusiasts of The National to post xps

Rogaine's a hell of a rug (DJ Mencap), Monday, 31 January 2011 19:56 (fifteen years ago)

most of my face is obscured with dark hair but sadly I am not liking this. you could have won my heart, the national, but you blew it

acoleuthic, Monday, 31 January 2011 19:57 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i didn't really see you liking them dude

call all destroyer, Monday, 31 January 2011 19:58 (fifteen years ago)

did not vote for them in this btw

call all destroyer, Monday, 31 January 2011 19:58 (fifteen years ago)

The National's best album (and likely best entry point) was Alligator. imo they should've broken up immediately after it was released.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 31 January 2011 19:58 (fifteen years ago)

Everyone has at least two albums showing up in the top 77 btw.

Daithi Lacha Flame (seandalai), Monday, 31 January 2011 19:58 (fifteen years ago)

a) take NPR or Pitchfork's music recommendations seriously
b) enjoy boring indie bands like the Walkmen, Arcade Fire, Band of Horses and Wilco
c) you're white btw

all good heuristics for guessing whether a particular individual likes the National, but not an explanation of why someone might like the national (unless you believe your skin color is what helps certain music sound good)

Mordy, Monday, 31 January 2011 19:58 (fifteen years ago)

c) you're white btw

p.s. - there actually are some white ppl who post (or at least lurk) on ILX, FYI

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Monday, 31 January 2011 19:59 (fifteen years ago)

That said, there are enough neat production touches in The National that I can see why they'd be effective in certain situations. Just doesn't have much bite to it, it's got a kinda studied softness instead. As you said, really.

acoleuthic, Monday, 31 January 2011 19:59 (fifteen years ago)

Everyone has at least two albums showing up in the top 77 btw.

GOOD NEWS E'RYBODY
