Ah! That *is* kind of satisfying. I like the synths too, this is like Abba meets the Knife.
― Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:19 (fifteen years ago)
guys this is straight 70s production imo
― call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:19 (fifteen years ago)
as much as I want to hate Arcade Fire, that seems to be a pretty good song. vaguely reminds me of Heart of Glass, and the lyrics remind me of a certain ILE thread, but it's undeniably catchy and I like how it builds into something kind of majestic, as another poster put it
― rockapads, Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:19 (fifteen years ago)
arcade fire song goes on bloody forever though doesn't it? please end.
― lextasy refix (lex pretend), Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:19 (fifteen years ago)
would not have bitched if this placed outside the top 20
― call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:20 (fifteen years ago)
I'm an indie kid till I die, but I've never got this band. I mean, at all. Ah well.

well i am an indie kid but i have no idea what an e rush feels like. but if it's like this then good.
it's even better lol

That an Arcade Fire track managed to place so highly in an ILM poll is a testament to how fantastic this particular song is

― Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:20 (fifteen years ago)
i don't know why top-ticket indie albums always sound so badly produced to me. something about them is always so flat.
― goole, Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:21 (fifteen years ago)
hahaha remember when the fake arcade fire tracklist was posted with all kinds of wacky runtimes?
― call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:21 (fifteen years ago)
if this is the track I think it is, then yeah, it's a good one. Made me almost get interested in Arcade Fire again as I loved Funeral, but despised Neon Bible. But from what I understand, rest of The Suburbs isn't so hot.
― Moodles, Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:21 (fifteen years ago)
enough fuzz bass, kids, just make the bass BIGGER jeez
Lex If you think it's "exactly" like what they were doing before you weren't paying attention the first time. It's not really going for e-rushy, it's going for Abba meets the Knife's Heartbeats and it's clearly trying to sound like 80s teen flick mall pop as well. Credits going up music.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:21 (fifteen years ago)
sprawl 2 is great, it was like 12th or something on my ballot

lol @ seandalai--I was going to post that it sounded like the Knife covering Blondie...
this is okay...key change is a cheat, since it changes back 10 secs later. This is kind of high in the poll but it's p good for AF I will give you that...

empty bluster that sounds like an indie kid shut-in's idea of what an e rush is like.
as cute as this is, you're really reaching here

nor was I *covers ass*
rebellion (lies) was gr8 but also the only AF song that I ever feel like hearing or need
― 2010 was a great year for highly-credible pop-ambient (acoleuthic), Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:23 (fifteen years ago)
the only thing that bugs me about sprawl 2 is there's a part where some instrument in the mix sounds like that windows 'ding' sound when a message box pops up
― ciderpress, Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:23 (fifteen years ago)
I loved Funeral, but despised Neon Bible
I'm the complete opposite. And the rest of The Suburbs is pretty okay imo (I voted for it in albums).

― call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:23 (fifteen years ago)
Could be just the utube playing tricks again, but it sounds really shrill and thin. And not in a good way like Sleigh Bells.
― Danzig, with tears in my eyes (DavidM), Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:24 (fifteen years ago)
omg this song's tune is basically Indie Rock 101

maybe, but it's reminiscent of a lot of other things, too. folk, dance pop (abba, though less sophisticated), early springsteen. gorgeous arrangement. i like this about 100 times more than any other arcade fire i've hard. wish they were this band.
does sound a hell of a lot like the knife, though much less chilly and elegant.

Love Sprawl II, but for those who think it's a bit fragile/thin, the Tommy Sunshine Quaalude Edit might do the trick.

The Knife understand songcraft, dynamics and loads of other things on a diff lvl 2 TAF imo despite superficial similarities in the tone of the synths

― Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:27 (fifteen years ago)
great great song, but no way should this be so much higher than "Fancy" last year (at #11)
― prolego, Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:27 (fifteen years ago)
TOO LOW.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:27 (fifteen years ago)
I've been living with my head in the sand, so The-Dream is relatively new to me, but I knew from hearing the first notes in this track that I had to hunt down as much of his stuff as I could and it's all been great!
― Moodles, Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:27 (fifteen years ago)
whoaaaaa @ terius #4
― the new mordant & zingy ilxor persona (ilxor), Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:27 (fifteen years ago)
christ the order of this top 10 is REALLY unexpected. "yamaha" was my #2 though, i had so many incredible punching-the-air moments to it in 2010 and every time i hear it i just feel like it's hugging me tightly.
CLUTCH / BRAKE / GET THIS MUTHAFUCKER RUNNIN / ME & YOU TOGETHER, GIRL THEY NEVER SEEN US COMIN...
― lextasy refix (lex pretend), Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:28 (fifteen years ago)
i'm not gonna shit all over "Sprawl 2": it's too high considering what didn't make it but any song connecting the dots between ABBA, Blondie (the little reggae rhythms throughout) & the Knife is at the very least worthy

this is a nonsensical criticism. i say that not because i like the band (i don't, though i'm impressed by this song), but because you're judging them for not being something they never tried to be. they're not trying to capture an e-rush, but a quasi-spiritual sense of emotional immersion and transcendence. whether or not they effectively accomplish this is up for grabs, but it's not like they're trying to horn in on club music's emotional property.
― normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:28 (fifteen years ago)
If it wasn't for last year's year end poll I would never have heard the-dream. And wouldn't my 2010 have been poorer if I hadn't. My most played artist last year and this is glorious!
― waka flocka flamini (pandemic), Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:28 (fifteen years ago)
Shocked Terius isn't higher. Kind of expected Yamaha to pull in at #1. Regretting not ordering my trax ballot.
