"shutterbugg" is a first-rate banger and the momentary soul ii soul nod might be the best use of a sample i heard in 2010? really amazing pop moment. didn't vote for it though.

yeah very little about the order - of the entire list really - has been what i would have thought. embracing the unpredictability.

I feel people aren't digging how this song turns introspective and ominous as it goes on - it's all about the subtleties

I'll listen to it again...this is my first encounter w/Janelle, and the expectations have been rather high. I like Cold War a lot but I think Tightrope under-delivers on first blush. I'll def. work with it.

fwiw (and Tuomas agreed last night) "Wondaland" is better than both "Tightrope" and "Cold War" and you should definitely make a point of hearing that one.

aw, they're very different songs. this isn't anywhere near as deep, but it's great fun. and it is a bit generic, not in sounding like other pop of the moment, but in hewing closely to an established retro-funk template. it's modernized the sound somewhat, but doesn't take it off in any shocking new directions. D.A.$ OTM in that respect: it is a lot like cee lo's "fuck you", though the reference points are a bit different. also reminds me of that retro-swing moment in the 90s, with squirrel nut zippers and the brian setzer orchestra and all (or yeah, "mambo #5"). better than most of that, though, and more willing to engage with contemporary pop technique than most of the nu swing cru were. the one thing it does bring to its template is an incredible nimbleness of delivery on the part of both janelle and big boi, a light dexterity that keeps all the pieces bouncing off the walls for the duration.

feel like i'm overlooking something obvious-- i had robyn, janelle, big boi, kanye all marked for top 5 inclusion. either that, or several of these going top 5 (girl unit, waka flocka flame) will be a v. unexpected surprise & there are a LOT more girl unit fans on ILM than i thought.....

ariel & the-dream are locks, probably arcade fire, not sure about waka + girl unit
