wouldn't have been upset to see shutterbugg take this thing
― call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:55 (fifteen years ago)
woah, thought "shuterbugg" would be #1
― prolego, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:55 (fifteen years ago)
"shutterbugg" is a first-rate banger and the momentary soul ii soul nod might be the best use of a sample i heard in 2010? really amazing pop moment. didn't vote for it though.
― lextasy refix (lex pretend), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:55 (fifteen years ago)
Also not a million miles away from Mambo #5, unfortunately.

big boi album will do better, there's hardly a bad track on the entire thing
― the new mordant & zingy ilxor persona (ilxor), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:56 (fifteen years ago)
Uhm was expecting this one to fare much better.
Usher's OMG is next! I sense it.
― Moka, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:56 (fifteen years ago)
lol
― teledyldonix, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:56 (fifteen years ago)
yeah very little about the order - of the entire list really - has been what i would have thought. embracing the unpredictability.
― lextasy refix (lex pretend), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:57 (fifteen years ago)
I feel people aren't digging how this song turns introspective and ominous as it goes on - it's all about the subtleties
oh and here's big booooiiiiii, another good song :)

I'll listen to it again...this is my first encounter w/Janelle, and the expectations have been rather high. I like Cold War a lot but I think Tightrope under-delivers on first blush. I'll def. work with it.

Is this Scott Storch, or am I confused?
― waka flocka flamini (pandemic), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:58 (fifteen years ago)
First time I see the video. Pretty cool. Love the party cup wall, might snatch the idea for my apartment.
― Moka, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:58 (fifteen years ago)
would rather "Umm Hmm" placed higher actually...
j/k I think I've only heard this one & really liked it if I'm not mistaken...
― last night a Drugs A. Money saved my life (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:58 (fifteen years ago)
fwiw (and Tuomas agreed last night) "Wondaland" is better than both "Tightrope" and "Cold War" and you should definitely make a point of hearing that one.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:59 (fifteen years ago)
haha wall of red cups

I feel that this is the worst part of the song, actually

aw, they're very different songs. this isn't anywhere near as deep, but it's great fun. and it is a bit generic, not in sounding like other pop of the moment, but in hewing closely to an established retro-funk template. it's modernized the sound somewhat, but doesn't take it off in any shocking new directions. D.A.$ OTM in that respect: it is a lot like cee lo's "fuck you", though the reference points are a bit different. also reminds me of that retro-swing moment in the 90s, with squirrel nut zippers and the brian setzer orchestra and all (or yeah, "mambo #5"). better than most of that, though, and more willing to engage with contemporary pop technique than most of the nu swing cru were. the one thing it does bring to its template is an incredible nimbleness of delivery on the part of both janelle and big boi, a light dexterity that keeps all the pieces bouncing off the walls for the duration.

Mmmm yeah feels strange Gorillaz not placing at all on this poll. Votes might have been splitted amongst their nominated singles. There wasn't any particular consensus on which one was the better one.

6. ROBYN "Dancing on My Own" [674 points, 22 votes, 5 first place votes]Youtube
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:03 (fifteen years ago)
I was so sure Scribble would place top 5
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:04 (fifteen years ago)
YES neither robyn nor janelle is number one! i had feared those two.
― lextasy refix (lex pretend), Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:04 (fifteen years ago)
cntndrzr-- well tik tok and no words/no thoughts are v. diff songs but someone could make the same comment there!
suffice to say i'm v. down on retro-soul in general and janelle in particular who doesn't seem to understand why people liked soul music.
― call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:04 (fifteen years ago)
Too low etc.

feel like i'm overlooking something obvious-- i had robyn, janelle, big boi, kanye all marked for top 5 inclusion. either that, or several of these going top 5 (girl unit, waka flocka flame) will be a v. unexpected surprise & there are a LOT more girl unit fans on ILM than i thought.....
ariel & the-dream are locks, probably arcade fire, not sure about waka + girl unit
― the new mordant & zingy ilxor persona (ilxor), Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:05 (fifteen years ago)
Shutterbug easily my favorite thing in top 10 so far
did it get any radio play this year? my car got wrecked and I got stuck with a car whose radio was p much inoperable...

this sounds like The Knife on uppers
(a compliment)
nothing too special tho, but yeah totally get why people go mad for it

― waka flocka flamini (pandemic), Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:07 (fifteen years ago)
voted for this robyn track btw. had i ordered my ballot, either "ILU" or "dancing on my own" would've been #1 (impossible decision), but might as well consider that an ilxor #1 fav track of the year-- slays me every time
― the new mordant & zingy ilxor persona (ilxor), Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:07 (fifteen years ago)
so ilxor if yr five are correct...this'll be the first time, well, ever, that there won't be a bona fide POP SMASH in the top 5?
― lextasy refix (lex pretend), Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:07 (fifteen years ago)
mark my words--dream is #1, waka is top 3
like this Robyn song better than the other one...
― last night a Drugs A. Money saved my life (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:07 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah ilxor your top 10 was pretty much otm asides maybe those 3 you mention. Weird choices for top 5 tho if those are the correct ones.

ooh I like the outro - formulaic but effective
don't see myself going back to it tho - way too emptily beatific - it's pure pop but it's nothing else
― 2010 was a great year for highly-credible pop-ambient (acoleuthic), Thursday, 27 January 2011 20:09 (fifteen years ago)
I actually preferred "Don't Fucking Tell Me What To Do" over this, but not by much.
Would've liked the beat on this to have been a bit more fierce.
