omg dying

call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:45 (fifteen years ago)

Would've been my #1 if I'd weighted my ballot.

Tyler/Perry's "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" (jaymc), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:45 (fifteen years ago)

r&b's yngwie malmsteen

^ a good thing, right?

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:45 (fifteen years ago)

a consensus pick i will stand by

ciderpress, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:45 (fifteen years ago)

people voted this over window seat; christ

call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:45 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah this is amazing. Massively appealing, could hear it in either ads or clubs or cafes or supermarkets and it wouldn't sound out of place.

Moka, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:46 (fifteen years ago)

that's because it's secretly v. generic

call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:46 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah the whole "JM is ultraweird" schtick isn't really borne out by the music.

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:47 (fifteen years ago)

this song is made by its dark melodicism - it sounds genuinely *different* to yr usual chart fare, unlike that rihanna song

lol xp

2010 was a great year for highly-credible pop-ambient (acoleuthic), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:47 (fifteen years ago)

Her head looks like it's been superimposed onto the body or something in that video.

Danzig, with tears in my eyes (DavidM), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:48 (fifteen years ago)

feel like 'tightrope' isn't a great club song actually despite the dance-centric video

ciderpress, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:48 (fifteen years ago)

it makes something quite unusual out of generic elements imo

2010 was a great year for highly-credible pop-ambient (acoleuthic), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:48 (fifteen years ago)

Nah, this has a ton of classic James Brown-isms, and James Brown-isms aren't commonplace enough to make this generic in any way. xps

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:48 (fifteen years ago)

it sounds genuinely *different* to yr usual chart fare

it didn't chart though, did it? it's not 'chart fare'

ciderpress, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:48 (fifteen years ago)

it may sound different from "chart fare" but it doesn't really sound different from like "music in general"

call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:49 (fifteen years ago)

xp - In a chart context that's true, but in alt-soul world JM plays it well safe compared to e.g. Erykah Badu.

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:49 (fifteen years ago)

I think it stands out from the rest of the mainstream this year because it doesnt have any synths or manipulated vocals which is quite refreshing to hear in a pop single nowadays.

I agree with this:

it makes something quite unusual out of generic elements imo

― 2010 was a great year for highly-credible pop-ambient (acoleuthic),

Moka, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:49 (fifteen years ago)

that's because it's secretly v. generic

really?? quick, name another pop/r&b tune that sounded like "tightrope" in 2010

it's like cheeky 60s dancing or something. feel like jm engages with the world in 2011 less than any artist we've had on this list.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:50 (fifteen years ago)

yeah and that Erykah Badu song is much, much, much better than this in every way

I do like how Tightrope strips back its sound in the last couple of minutes - that sense of dynamism is rly well-managed

I'd say Adele or Sharon Jones but not sure how popular they actually are.

Moka, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:50 (fifteen years ago)

^it DOES seem a bit generic...still intrigued by the album, though. I thought Cold War wz pretty cool (despite my massive comparisons to GBarkley)

the James Brown comment kind of makes a lot of pieces fall into place.

tightrope is not oceans apart from fuck you imo.

last night a Drugs A. Money saved my life (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:50 (fifteen years ago)

She has a fascinating face.

Danzig, with tears in my eyes (DavidM), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:51 (fifteen years ago)

Badu song would have made my top 10 and I didn't vote Tightrope (which has SUCH a greater sense of songcraft than Fuck You)

2010 was a great year for highly-credible pop-ambient (acoleuthic), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:51 (fifteen years ago)

i might like tightrope if it was from 1965

call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:52 (fifteen years ago)

Oh yeah duh, 'fuck you' is perhaps actually the closest pop/r&b single to this one. Although Cee-lo's appropiation of retro sound is complerelt tongue in cheek and Janelle seems pretty serious about it.

Moka, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:53 (fifteen years ago)

Also not a million miles away from Mambo #5, unfortunately.

Youtube

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:54 (fifteen years ago)

OMG that screencap

the new mordant & zingy ilxor persona (ilxor), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:54 (fifteen years ago)

Screencap makes me want to watch the video (which I've never seen).

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:54 (fifteen years ago)

I feel people aren't digging how this song turns introspective and ominous as it goes on - it's all about the subtleties

oh and here's big booooiiiiii, another good song :)

2010 was a great year for highly-credible pop-ambient (acoleuthic), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:54 (fifteen years ago)

matched P&J #7 ranking looks like!

the new mordant & zingy ilxor persona (ilxor), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:55 (fifteen years ago)

like I've only heard two J Monae songs but could picture both being sung equally as well as Cee Lo

(but yeah I'm willing to bet that Tightrope is a much more well-written song than FU)

last night a Drugs A. Money saved my life (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:55 (fifteen years ago)

Voted for this as well, though if I'd ranked my ballot it would have been towards the bottom.

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:55 (fifteen years ago)

wouldn't have been upset to see shutterbugg take this thing

call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:55 (fifteen years ago)

woah, thought "shuterbugg" would be #1

prolego, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:55 (fifteen years ago)

"shutterbugg" is a first-rate banger and the momentary soul ii soul nod might be the best use of a sample i heard in 2010? really amazing pop moment. didn't vote for it though.

big boi album will do better, there's hardly a bad track on the entire thing

the new mordant & zingy ilxor persona (ilxor), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:56 (fifteen years ago)

Uhm was expecting this one to fare much better.

Usher's OMG is next! I sense it.

Moka, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:56 (fifteen years ago)

lol

teledyldonix, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:56 (fifteen years ago)

yeah very little about the order - of the entire list really - has been what i would have thought. embracing the unpredictability.

I'll listen to it again...this is my first encounter w/Janelle, and the expectations have been rather high. I like Cold War a lot but I think Tightrope under-delivers on first blush. I'll def. work with it.

last night a Drugs A. Money saved my life (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:57 (fifteen years ago)

Is this Scott Storch, or am I confused?
