9. RIHANNA "Rude Boy" [628 points, 23 votes, 2 first place votes]
Youtube

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:32 (fifteen years ago)

good song, good video

ciderpress, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:33 (fifteen years ago)

Monster has a good beat and Minaj is indeed quite arresting. That's all I'll say for it. Overlong and coarse, otoh.

2010 was a great year for highly-credible pop-ambient (acoleuthic), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:33 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, "Rude Boy" video is amazing.

Tyler/Perry's "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" (jaymc), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:33 (fifteen years ago)

ur right LJ; message is great. I wz a little rmde at the whole 'evil-Internet' thing at first, but when he asks "why are there still races?" right at the end, it really sends it home...

(xpost abt Lil B)

last night a Drugs A. Money saved my life (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:34 (fifteen years ago)

I love Rihanna but only like this song...

last night a Drugs A. Money saved my life (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:34 (fifteen years ago)

yay

hmmm might miss the rest of the top 10. oh wellz.

teledyldonix, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:35 (fifteen years ago)

the-dream - yamaha
janelle - tightrope
robyn - dancing on my own
big boi - shutterbugg
ariel pink - round & round
arcade fire - sprawl ii
girl unit - wut
waka flocka - hard in da paint

These are the two songs I'm not quite sure they'll make it. I'd figure they'd place much earlier somewhere around 30-40, will be actually surprised if they make it to the top slots.

Moka, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:35 (fifteen years ago)

i think girl unit might be a bit too out there for a bit # of votes? same w/ waka flocka, actually.. but we'll see

the new mordant & zingy ilxor persona (ilxor), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:36 (fifteen years ago)

for a big # of votes

COME HERE RUDE BOY CAN YOU GET IT UP

^^echoed around playgrounds everywhere last year lol. what a fantastic summer jam - i wrote on the jukebox that it felt out of place on rated r at first, but actually it's another manifestation of that album's themes of self-reclamation - she's fucking the pain away, and if she wants you to be the captain and ride her, it's only at her behest - "imma let you...". and the imperatives in the chorus!

so many great remixes too - loose cannons remix ft. lady chann, remix ft. assassin...

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:36 (fifteen years ago)

I'm calling either big boi or ariel pink to take #1. Yamaha on #3.

Moka, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:36 (fifteen years ago)

big arcade fire backlash plus a lot of hate for voting for an album & track might mean people deliberately didn't vote for the track just the album. otoh it could show up in the next 2 posts, lol.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:37 (fifteen years ago)

don't really need to hear it again so I am going to listen to Fireworks (Deadboys slo-mo edit) again...

i'd be v surprised if hard in da paint doesn't make top 5...

last night a Drugs A. Money saved my life (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:37 (fifteen years ago)

Rude Boy video is A+, had never seen it before. Decent song too.

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:37 (fifteen years ago)

Sprawl II transcends its Arcade Fire-ness imo. I'm also doubting it will place at this point, tho I would be happy to see it b/c it is a jam.

pretty sure the ilx consensus was boring album, great track -- but could be wrong!

the new mordant & zingy ilxor persona (ilxor), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:38 (fifteen years ago)

just listened to lil b again, these are probably my favorite lyrics all year

its like the case human race has failed
even tho we in space we still hate ourselves
age of information is hell

wow...... hmmm.... crazy...... damn….. (diamonddave85), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:38 (fifteen years ago)

i like rude boy well enough but am past my limit on how much i've heard it

call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:38 (fifteen years ago)

who did the beat for 'rude boy'?

ciderpress, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:38 (fifteen years ago)

xp to diamonddave - just as you posted those lyrics I got to just that point in the song!

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:39 (fifteen years ago)

Rude Boy feels a bit...similar to stuff that dominates the charts every year

sure it does a job, but nothing to really distinguish it

2010 was a great year for highly-credible pop-ambient (acoleuthic), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:39 (fifteen years ago)

xp stargate did it iirc

call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:39 (fifteen years ago)

Rude Boy video is a complete ripoff of M.I.A.'s aesthetics. Like it but can't switch my brain to stop thinking mia.

Moka, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:39 (fifteen years ago)

who did the beat for 'rude boy'?

stargate. beats out of character

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:39 (fifteen years ago)

I think I kinda assumed i missed this entirely? Gotta go read whole thread now brb

i turned my head n boom I saw that tweet #wow (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:40 (fifteen years ago)

Rude Boy video is a complete ripoff upstaging of M.I.A.'s aesthetics.

the new mordant & zingy ilxor persona (ilxor), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:40 (fifteen years ago)

xp wow i would have never guessed

ciderpress, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:40 (fifteen years ago)

funny how much the "rude boy" video looks like an M.I.A. album cover

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:40 (fifteen years ago)

duh, i guess the M.I.A. thing's been covered...

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:41 (fifteen years ago)

MIA aesthetics are all rip-off to begin with! rihanna is from the actual caribbean at least.

i really like this song, but i do wonder in an academic way when we won't have pop hits built on stuttering trancey synths anymore. that's the sound of the decade imo.

goole, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:41 (fifteen years ago)

Come to think about it there's nothing aurally speaking that actually brings to mind any Jamaican rude boys on that song. Which is frankly very dissapointing. Would love to hear her do some ska skit.

the new mordant & zingy ilxor persona (ilxor), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:44 (fifteen years ago)

^ a good thing, right?

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:45 (fifteen years ago)

a consensus pick i will stand by

ciderpress, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:45 (fifteen years ago)

people voted this over window seat; christ

call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:45 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah this is amazing. Massively appealing, could hear it in either ads or clubs or cafes or supermarkets and it wouldn't sound out of place.

Moka, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:46 (fifteen years ago)

that's because it's secretly v. generic
