^right on! these are the little decisions that separate good poll from great ones!

last night a Drugs A. Money saved my life (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:16 (fifteen years ago)

instead of listening to that fucking dreadful pile of shit again, I just listened to The Age Of Information for the first time. fucking AWESOME.

2010 was a great year for highly-credible pop-ambient (acoleuthic), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:16 (fifteen years ago)

*whip my hair out

teledyldonix, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:16 (fifteen years ago)

Run from 20 to 16 was completely unimpressive for me. Not because I didn't expect them to place but because they sound like some of the most generic tRacks I've heard on this countdown so far. Not good not bad.

Run from 15 to 11 is great.

Moka, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:17 (fifteen years ago)

It's so hateful, idg the love.

Danzig, with tears in my eyes (DavidM), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:17 (fifteen years ago)

that post was sponsored by the word 'fuck' btw

2010 was a great year for highly-credible pop-ambient (acoleuthic), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:17 (fifteen years ago)

"Invisible Light" sounds generic to you? "Window Seat" sounds generic to you?

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:18 (fifteen years ago)

"bodies" is pretty great though. wish it had done well enough to have a shot here. didn't even get an official single release or video.

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:18 (fifteen years ago)

correction: I actually liked #20.

Moka, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:18 (fifteen years ago)

re: katy b

well, she's from london, of irish heritage, and i first heard her as the vocalist on various uk funky trax - dj ng's "tell me", geeneus' "as i", geeneus' "good life" refix. so many of those vocalists end up just being names featured on other people's records but i guess the time ended up being just right for her to make a commercial breakthrough - "katy on a mission" was one of the more ubiquitous UK pop hits last year. she's not on a major label though - it was the first single released under rinse fm's imprint, a former pirate station that only got its official licence last year.

her songs document really accurately what i consider the "real" experience of clubbing (as opposed to the weird up-in-the-club aesthetic that otherwise dominates pop atm, which is kind of like...what a 15-yr-old who's never been to a club thinks they're like). katy sings about the way the music punches you in the stomach, the encounters w/strangers that are half hostile and half flirtatious, the way you lose yourself in the crowd and the music, the way being on the dancefloor feels comfortable in the end, the dread in the back of your mind of the night ending, the next day when you keep reliving the best moments and just want to do it all over again. and she sings this beautifully and anthemically.

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:18 (fifteen years ago)

I'd love if there was so much stuff that sounded like those two songs that I could be allowed to be bored by those two songs.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:18 (fifteen years ago)

I get how Invisible Light sounds generic (but really fun and joyful with it; plus they give it their own spin) but nobody is making music like Window Seat

2010 was a great year for highly-credible pop-ambient (acoleuthic), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:19 (fifteen years ago)

i've listened to 'the age of information' like 30 times since i first heard it yesterday

would have been in my top 5 had i heard it before the poll, maybe #1 if it was this fresh in my head

ciderpress, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:19 (fifteen years ago)

I think FU is a decent single, tho tbh I have been continually baffled at how highly it has been touted in critical circles throughout the year.

beer, beer, beer (Pillbox), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:19 (fifteen years ago)

Okay, ready to crack open the top 10?

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:20 (fifteen years ago)

the lex's great explanation there makes me wish i liked katy b's songs. But I was never a clubber so I guess I'll never get it.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:20 (fifteen years ago)

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:22 (fifteen years ago)

first things first i'll eat your brains

waka flocka flamini (pandemic), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:23 (fifteen years ago)

Katy B's songs are like "Weak Become Heroes" then?

Danzig, with tears in my eyes (DavidM), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:23 (fifteen years ago)

Okay, ready to crack open the top 10?

― Johnny Fever,

But we already got one. It's this one + screencaps:

top ten predictions (would say the first 5 are absolute locks)

the-dream - yamaha
janelle - tightrope
kanye - monster
robyn - dancing on my own
big boi - shutterbugg
ariel pink - round & round
arcade fire - sprawl ii
girl unit - wut
waka flocka - hard in da paint
rihanna - rude boy

would love for a surprise to sneak in there-- maybe "always loved a film"/"scribble" or alicia keys "broken heart".............

Moka, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:23 (fifteen years ago)

hey LJ what did you like more abt "Age of Information"? the highly intricate flow or the pop-ambient music?

also AG otm about the lex...poet of the dance club.

last night a Drugs A. Money saved my life (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:23 (fifteen years ago)

i'm not even going to complain about kanye because for real nicki's verse is one of the best couple of minutes i heard in 2010 and if kanye and jay were good for little else last year, they at least provided the stage for nicki to comprehensively murk them

PINK WIG THICK ASS GIVE EM WHIPLASH

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:24 (fifteen years ago)

Actually, no wait there's 2 songs in there which I'm sure will be replaced by other ones.

Moka, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:25 (fifteen years ago)

Katy B's songs are like "Weak Become Heroes" then?

that's a good comparison point, though she's in the moment, not reminiscing, so she's less sentimental and more...real time. also, it's v definitely a girl's perspective.

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:25 (fifteen years ago)

only song I had heard off this album...cute indie girl I went to school with (the one who thought MAYA was a sellout, for those of you keeping track) played it for a bunch of us around Christmas...she said she didn't like the album at all, but she wanted me to listen to Minaj: "She becomes twenty different people in, like thirty seconds!"

last night a Drugs A. Money saved my life (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:27 (fifteen years ago)

― last night a Drugs A. Money saved my life (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:23 (3 minutes ago)

lol

the way the music intensified I guess...can't separate the rapping from the synths, they needed each other...beautiful song tho and I rly appreciate what he's saying

2010 was a great year for highly-credible pop-ambient (acoleuthic), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:28 (fifteen years ago)

if scribble isn't top 5 I will be extremely pissed off.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:29 (fifteen years ago)

gonna be very surprised if arcade fire makes this list

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:29 (fifteen years ago)

me too

teledyldonix, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:29 (fifteen years ago)

hopefully "wile out" makes it

prolego, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:30 (fifteen years ago)

I have a feeling "Goomba Pimpin'" isn't going to place. Shame on you all.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:31 (fifteen years ago)

gonna be very surprised if arcade fire doesn't make this list

they only had the one track nominated so no votesplitting

ciderpress, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:31 (fifteen years ago)

"monster" would have been top 5 for me without jay-z's verse, i think? but i couldn't in all honesty vote for a song that i have to skip a third of every time, even if i always end up playing nicki's verse on loop like 10 times to make up - have it totally off by heart obv

she on a diet but my POCKETS EATING CHEESECAKE!

also, "forget barbie, fuck nicki, sh-she's fake!" is such a great way to discourse on her own realness.

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:31 (fifteen years ago)

more props to lex on that katy b post. dude can write.

9. RIHANNA "Rude Boy" [628 points, 23 votes, 2 first place votes]
Youtube

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:32 (fifteen years ago)

good song, good video

ciderpress, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:33 (fifteen years ago)

Monster has a good beat and Minaj is indeed quite arresting. That's all I'll say for it. Overlong and coarse, otoh.

2010 was a great year for highly-credible pop-ambient (acoleuthic), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:33 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, "Rude Boy" video is amazing.

Tyler/Perry's "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" (jaymc), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:33 (fifteen years ago)

ur right LJ; message is great. I wz a little rmde at the whole 'evil-Internet' thing at first, but when he asks "why are there still races?" right at the end, it really sends it home...

(xpost abt Lil B)

last night a Drugs A. Money saved my life (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:34 (fifteen years ago)

I love Rihanna but only like this song...

last night a Drugs A. Money saved my life (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:34 (fifteen years ago)

yay

hmmm might miss the rest of the top 10. oh wellz.

teledyldonix, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:35 (fifteen years ago)

the-dream - yamaha
janelle - tightrope
robyn - dancing on my own
big boi - shutterbugg
ariel pink - round & round
arcade fire - sprawl ii
girl unit - wut
waka flocka - hard in da paint

These are the two songs I'm not quite sure they'll make it. I'd figure they'd place much earlier somewhere around 30-40, will be actually surprised if they make it to the top slots.

Moka, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:35 (fifteen years ago)

i think girl unit might be a bit too out there for a bit # of votes? same w/ waka flocka, actually.. but we'll see
