Hell yes, THAT Crystal Castles jam was my #3. This is what the next Cure album should sound like.

went for cobra commander and came out elephant man (Whitey on the Moon), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:01 (fifteen years ago)

although im guilty of not doing this i prefer big posts to rapidfire ones

tuomascratch beat (deej), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:01 (fifteen years ago)

I was hoping that Crystal Castles w/Robert Smith tune was going to be a 10CC cover, but instead it's a cover of a different and less interesting song. Meh.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:01 (fifteen years ago)

"crown on the ground" is a massive fucking jam too (sleigh bells on itunes now)

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:01 (fifteen years ago)

lol crystal castles feat. r. smith--ridic ilm bait but a really boring song

call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:01 (fifteen years ago)

"Not in Love" is nice enough but I don't get what it's doing all the way up at #12.

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:02 (fifteen years ago)

^^^now this i would have been in to.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:02 (fifteen years ago)

kinda prefer the smith-less album cut

opeth winfrey (donna rouge), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:03 (fifteen years ago)

ok here goes: here are my reactions to all the stuff i was a) unfamiliar with until this poll and b) liked. so if it’s not here either i’d heard it or it sucked! or both!

77. DIDDY-DIRTY MONEY "Ass on the Floor"
this kind of minor-key “epic” club tune is some of my favorite music ever, i’ll basically always like a song like this. i loved loved loved “last night” and this is really similar. the “ass on the floor” call-out seems kind of out place, but it still works, like everybody is miserable over some heartbreak but going out clubbing is some kind of duty -- imagine being in a club where every single person has just broken up with someone else? it’d be pretty weird but i bet everyone would get laid.

75. AZARI & III "Reckless (With Your Love) (Tensnake remix)"
yeah this is awesome. can i just throw out there that the C+C lift is great and if you like that then you ought not complain so much about girl talk? i know he beats a witty moment like that into the dirt but come on, it’s the same. hey i know that! lol! sharing an audio history with other people that can be called out is one of the great things about pop music.

70. THE FIVES FT. VANYA TAYLOR "It's What You Do (Hottest By Far)"
this is good but feels clinical i guess. i check the funky house thread once every six months. is this track a little too perfect or something?

66. CASSIE "Skydiver"
airy, diaphanous tracks like this either take you up or leave you thinking they’re boring and pointless (judging by the reaction here) but this really worked for me. just being really pretty for four minutes is more than enough. the last 30 seconds are especially great.

62. SWANS "No Words/No Thoughts"
never been real familiar with swans, tbh, i’ve tried their now-classic 80’s stuff and it didn’t really click for me. this certainly sounds awesome. maybe it’s the dive-bombing horns in the beginning segment, but this puts me in mind of mingus, weirdly enough. there’s a gospel-shout underpinning to both i guess.

61. GAMES "Strawberry Skies"
holy crap! this is like a fuzzier cheaper version of ryuichi sakamoto. why isn’t more music like this? it’s really not that hard! i dunno what the fuck these crystal castles people think they’re doing (those tracks are crap btw)

58. GIL SCOTT-HERON "Me and the Devil"
awesome.

56. KE$HA "We R Who We R"
ok this breaks my unfamiliarity rule but i have to say this: i really like this song. i can’t stand kesha, and i still can’t. but this thing just works really well for some reason. it charges headlong into everything that’s aggravating (“annoying” if you will) about kesha (the pronunciation of “ar” sounds) & dr luke (the music of dr luke), and comes out on the other side even more powerful. i really enjoy listening to this and i enjoy hating kesha as i listen to it. i think n1tsuh’s piece kind of contextualized her for me.

54. DRAKE "Fireworks (Deadboy Slo Mo House Edit)"
this rules rules rules, but i kind of wanted it to kick a little more? my ear wants a 2step beat i think. really pretty, one of the best things here. thanks tim!

45. NICOLAS JAAR "WOUH"
ooh, pretty

39. LIL B "The Age of Information"
is this guy serious? yes, he’s very serious. this is terrific. we have a lot of heartfelt pretty music on this list but this damn near beats all of it i think.

38. KATY B "Katy on a Mission"
i can see why this is important. i like the still-homemade quality of it. something about it reminds me of a highschool talent show and i don’t mean that as a diss.

33. THESE NEW PURITANS "We Want War"
not bad for jagger shit! lex hates the vocals, but i don’t think they are “indie” so much. reminds me of this heat in a way? extreme music with simple, declamatory working-class (?) english voices on it. i have to say it reminds me of kate bush, too, heh. the non-rock instruments are much better orchestrated than they usually are on rock records somebody went to school!

32. TENSNAKE "Coma Cat"
can’t argue with this. if you have some kind of bell/steel drum/chime/detuned twinkly metallic shit on your song, i will like it.

25. TINIE TEMPAH "Pass Out"
nice riff. “soon i’ll be the king like prince charles” is kind of a weak boast tho, right?

20. E-40 ft. CLYDE CARSON & HUSALAH "Lightweight Jammin”
stuff like this is so elemental and great, i dunno what to say really. i hope there are songs like this around until the lights finally go out.

goole, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:04 (fifteen years ago)

This is closer to David Guetta and Swedish House Mafia than the band are willing to admit but I still love it. I don't always like Robert Smith's vocals but he works on here and it blows the Smithless album version out of the water.

Matt DC, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:06 (fifteen years ago)

screaming chorus synths > R. Smith's voice, but "Not in Love" is a jam...

Rill Rill is okay, but I kind of feel the whole "don't vote for singles out of the albums you are voting" (which I've broken many times) should be enforced on that one.

great post, goole. agree on most everything, except fives (awesome) and kesha (poo)

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:08 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i am surprised at how down i am w/age of info

call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:08 (fifteen years ago)

so far, I am immensely pleased w/ how the top 20 is shaping up

beer, beer, beer (Pillbox), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:08 (fifteen years ago)

Rill Rill is okay, but I kind of feel the whole "don't vote for singles out of the albums you are voting" (which I've broken many times) should be enforced on that one.

I voted for "Rill Rill" but not Treats.

Tyler/Perry's "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" (jaymc), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:09 (fifteen years ago)

hey, never heard this crystal castles w/ robt smith thing. fucking love the dude's voice for all time true. good tune & lyrics, too (courtesy of platinum blonde). love when it goes all massive M83 crushing on the "i'm not in love chorus." goosebumps, like what U2 should be doing nowadays. totally fw this.

11. CEE-LO GREEN "Fuck You" [586 points, 19 votes, 2 first place votes]
Youtube

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:10 (fifteen years ago)

haha and FUCK YOU "fuck you" - no top 10 for you!

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:11 (fifteen years ago)

the diff ppl have with azari vs. girl talk is what its referencing obv -- im knee-deep in rap every day i dont need dude 'recontextualizing' 'whip my hair' for me -- i understand some ppl discover these songs this way but

otoh, at a house club using C+C codes a cheesy move -- so many house DJs avoid anything resembling pop moves so it feels a lot more energizing

tuomascratch beat (deej), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:11 (fifteen years ago)

hahahaha yesssssssssssssss just missing the top 10!

teledyldonix, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:11 (fifteen years ago)

awesome--no top 10 for that bullshit

btw can someone quickly explain katy b to me??

call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:11 (fifteen years ago)

ideally it would have placed 78th but i am very happy

teledyldonix, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:12 (fifteen years ago)

btw can someone quickly explain katy b to me??

who she is and where she came from or what's good about her music?

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:12 (fifteen years ago)

i mean, what girl talk recontextualizes that codes as 'cheesy' for me is rock & indie ... but i kinda feel like hes doing it w/ a pretty boring selection of songs ... basically he's right in a middlebrown niche that i feel like works angles that i dont have any interest in, recontextualizing in ways that dont generate their own friction or interest for me

tuomascratch beat (deej), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:13 (fifteen years ago)

both but more abt her music?

call all destroyer, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:13 (fifteen years ago)

I thought "Fuck You" was fun the first time I heard it. Every one of the thousand or so times I've heard it since has ranged from *shrug* to "MAKE IT STOP!"

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:13 (fifteen years ago)

"fuck you" wore on me so quickly. I went from loving it to hating it in about 5 listens.

prolego, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:13 (fifteen years ago)

top ten predictions (would say the first 5 are absolute locks)

the-dream - yamaha
janelle - tightrope
kanye - monster
robyn - dancing on my own
big boi - shutterbugg
ariel pink - round & round
arcade fire - sprawl ii
girl unit - wut
waka flocka - hard in da paint
rihanna - rude boy

would love for a surprise to sneak in there-- maybe "always loved a film"/"scribble" or alicia keys "broken heart".............

goole, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:13 (fifteen years ago)

I gather this has been ubiquitous on pop radio the past year, but I've only hear it a few times. Which was enough, frankly.

Danzig, with tears in my eyes (DavidM), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:14 (fifteen years ago)

"ILU" was another track that I wanted to vote for but ran out of time. FWIW I was about to give it 14 points, not enough to change its position. (Wow what a leap in points b/w ##14 and 13, did you notice?)

SVIIB album was pretty snoresworthy IMHO but "ILU" is fantastic.

Jeff W, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:14 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, one of a few standout knock-down brilliant tracks on this list. took me totally by surprise.

xp - I've only heard it once afaik and I guessed it wouldn't improve with continued exposure.

last night a Drugs A. Money saved my life (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:16 (fifteen years ago)

instead of listening to that fucking dreadful pile of shit again, I just listened to The Age Of Information for the first time. fucking AWESOME.

*whip my hair out

teledyldonix, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:16 (fifteen years ago)

Run from 20 to 16 was completely unimpressive for me. Not because I didn't expect them to place but because they sound like some of the most generic tRacks I've heard on this countdown so far. Not good not bad.

Run from 15 to 11 is great.

Moka, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:17 (fifteen years ago)

It's so hateful, idg the love.

"Invisible Light" sounds generic to you? "Window Seat" sounds generic to you?

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:18 (fifteen years ago)

"bodies" is pretty great though. wish it had done well enough to have a shot here. didn't even get an official single release or video.

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:18 (fifteen years ago)

correction: I actually liked #20.
