last night a Drugs A. Money saved my life (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:19 (fifteen years ago)

wheyyyy

e40 album is def my own most underrated of last year - i found it kinda hard to digest TWO DISCS' WORTH of material - but this song is undeniable. not my fav off the album - think that's "got it" or "dem boyz" - but yeah a banger that i wish i'd heard in the wild a lot more last year.

waka flocka flamini (pandemic), Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:20 (fifteen years ago)

drums like that make me want to move to SF so i never have any period where i forget to keep up with bay area hip-hop ever again

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:21 (fifteen years ago)

i never felt the need to listen to both discs in sequence, only got around to night shift after i had od'd on day shift

flopson, Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:22 (fifteen years ago)

whoa the guy with the red cap and the glasses totally looks like the black version of an uncle of mine. Lovely drum loop.

what can i say? i'm lazy and was never a big fan in the past, though i've always respected them.

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:24 (fifteen years ago)

The video is funny in how awkward most of their dance moves are. Seems they don't seem too comfortable with the clichee of dancing in your hip hop video.

19. LCD SOUNDSYSTEM "Dance Yrself Clean" [434 points, 13 votes]
Youtube

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:27 (fifteen years ago)

YES

vienn?tta (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:27 (fifteen years ago)

Love Husalah's verse but I always get distracted and laugh if I'm watching the video when the other two dudes kinda rub up against each other just after he starts his verse, seems so unlikely and incongrous with the rest of the video.

waka flocka flamini (pandemic), Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:27 (fifteen years ago)

lightweight jammin is cool. like how minimal and conversational it is. wish i could hear more than 50% of the words. but yeah, got a nice, loose feel to it, doesn't seem like it was contrived in a boardroom and given a really dull tune

o god

acoleuthic, Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:28 (fifteen years ago)

20. E-40 ft. CLYDE CARSON & HUSALAH "Lightweight Jammin'" [432 points, 12 votes, 1 first place vote]

slap tremendo! voted for it (#2 slot, just below a pointless sacrifice vote), was pretty sure it'd place, glad it broke the top 20.

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:28 (fifteen years ago)

I took the Lightweight Jammin video to be straight-up comedy, is it supposed to be serious? Maybe I've just been primed by Smang.

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:29 (fifteen years ago)

find it v telling that of all the rap songs itt, smang and jammin are by a damned mile the ones i like best musically

acoleuthic, Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:30 (fifteen years ago)

this is the only song i loved full-stop on the lcd album

the new mordant & zingy ilxor persona (ilxor), Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:30 (fifteen years ago)

Haven't checked out any new stuff yet but these are the ones I have:

(TIE) 64. FOUR TET "Love Cry" [242 points, 9 votes]
Yeah, sorry, I must be the only Ilxor who found the Four Tet a bit dull and polite. There just didn't seem to be enough going on when I first checked it out and it was relegated to the "will go back to one day" pile. I think I included the Roska remix in a mix I put together a short while back, and I like that version.

62. SWANS "No Words/No Thoughts" [248 points, 7 votes, 1 first place vote]
I'd written this album off as "not my cup of cha" at first, but only after a cursory listen. I'd like to know more about the context of Swans, cos this album's more like Shriekback or 23 Skidoo than the harsh, grinding sound I had expected. Listening to this track on headphones really opened it up though, and I'm ready to give it a bit more of a go.

61. GAMES "Strawberry Skies" [250 points, 7 votes]
I love Games - more than Oneohtrix Point Never, which is something I respect rather than enjoy. This isn't my favourite track ("Planet Party" blows my mind), but it is great. Like Fleetwood Mac soundtracking an advert for Black Magic chocolate on an Amiga. Wicked!

58. GIL SCOTT-HERON "Me and the Devil" [254 points, 10 votes]
I loved the album, but it is a bit scrawny and lacks fully-fledged songs. This is a highlight though.

54. DRAKE "Fireworks (Deadboy Slo Mo House Edit)" [260 points, 10 votes]
Yep, love it!

52. BEACH HOUSE "Zebra" [266 points, 9 votes]
I don't know the difference between Beach House and Best Coast either, even though I realise they sound completely different. This sounds like very generic chillwave though - much like jj or something.

(TIE) 48. KANYE WEST "All of the Lights" [270 points, 8 votes, 1 first place vote]
The only track I've heard off the new Kanye, and wow is it underwhelming. I get about 2 mins into it before I instinctively turn it off. It's not bad, but I expect more from Kanye.

(TIE) 48. ARIEL PINK'S HAUNTED GRAFFITI "Bright Lit Blue Skies" [270 points, 8 votes, 1 first place vote]
I think I voted for this one although it could have been any of the other AP noms. I do prefer his previous material to the new album, which is a lot more cohesive in style and doesn't jump around as much. Still, it's lo-fi power pop par excellence and there's nothing wrong with that.

46. JANELLE MONÁE "Cold War" [272 points, 11 votes, 1 first place vote]
Love this. Love Archandroid. Not the best track on the album, thoguh I'm sure more will come.

45. NICOLAS JAAR "WOUH" [274 points, 8 votes, 1 first place vote]
Haven't heard it yet, even though I've heard nearly everything he's put out.

44. CARIBOU "Odessa" [278 points, 11 votes]
Best track on an overrated album. See, I really liked the previous one but the recent one just sounds reedy and annoying.

38. KATY B "Katy on a Mission" [322 points, 13 votes]
Played a d'n'b version out the other night. People are right about the singing - it's the oo-ooo-ooo what makes it. Heart this.

37. JAMIE WOON "Night Air" [324 points, 13 votes]
Heart this even more. It's utterly spellbinding. Woon on his own sounds like some backpacker AOR shit, but on this tune - wow! My favourite bit is the rising bassline that reminds me of "Just An Illusion" by Imagination.

36. CARIBOU "Sun" [330 points, 11 votes]
Bleh, not for me ta.

32. TENSNAKE "Coma Cat" [342 points, 11 votes, 1 first place vote]
YES! Absolute TUNE! I have trouble mixing it though as it's only about 112bpm which is slower on the whole than most of what I play out. I'd love to find a way of playing this as a penultimate track, but scared it would slow the crowd down. Still, it's amazing. I was just digging on this when I went to LED Festival last summer and it reminds me of the whole day.

25. TINIE TEMPAH "Pass Out" [398 points, 14 votes]
Phew! The anthems on this list! Best number one single in a decade I'd wager. An absolute beast! I played it at the end of the night to a crowd of minimal tech ravers, and they totally got into it, which was fun.

20. e-40 - Lightweight Jammin'
Now I know I voted for this. What started as an ILX meme fast became one of my all time jams. Every time I hear it, I hear something new. Love love love.

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:31 (fifteen years ago)

I have probably listened to "Dance Yourself Clean" more than any other song this entire year (except for "Mandinka"). The synth solo bit around the "it's your shooooooowwwwwwwww" part is facemelting and it makes me go totally and completely apeshit every time I hear a DJ play it. It has seriously become one of my absolute favorite single "moments" in musical history, alongside of, like, the last 40 seconds of "Once In A Lifetime" and the loud bits of "Soon"

vienn?tta (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:32 (fifteen years ago)

in retrospect, I should have voted for this over 'I Can Change.' My second favorite from TIH, after 'One Touch.' (which was not nommed).

beer, beer, beer (Pillbox), Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:32 (fifteen years ago)

Don't mind "Dance Yourself Clean", it has some ace moments.

this feels rly contrived and unoriginal

mind you it's at least kinda enjoyable* unlike the other lcd sstm track itt

this said, he is still my sworn enemy

*it is getting less enjoyable now and stevie d's claims are baffling me

it's okay

last night a Drugs A. Money saved my life (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:35 (fifteen years ago)

the only thing from this album that really hit me. I love the way it hits you all of a sudden long after the intro

Dan S, Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:36 (fifteen years ago)

i was ready to give up on it too

teledyldonix, Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:36 (fifteen years ago)

Well the synth sounds absolutely fucking incredible. He even said in some interview that it was the last song they recorded (I think?) and that it pretty much came out of him falling totally in love with that one synth sound. It is, more or less, perfection.

LOL @ teledydonix

LJ otm...Murphy writes decent songs but fares rather poorly as an "indie darling"

a synth sound that is basically the one MGMT used in all their hit singles

acoleuthic, Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:38 (fifteen years ago)

nope, that's gonna be higher up yet

the new mordant & zingy ilxor persona (ilxor), Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:38 (fifteen years ago)

erykah <3

threw my weight behind the album (and if i was voting for any one song off it, it's be the incredible 10-minute closer "out my mind, just in time", which is maybe the pinnacle of her career), but...this is such a beautiful song.

her brixton academy show = my favourite of the year, too.

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:38 (fifteen years ago)

(and if i was voting for any one song off it, it's be the incredible 10-minute closer "out my mind, just in time", which is maybe the pinnacle of her career)

yup-- voted for this tune

the new mordant & zingy ilxor persona (ilxor), Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:39 (fifteen years ago)

Can't remember whether I voted for this or another song off the album. Love it anyway.

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:39 (fifteen years ago)

Wow, that is waaaay lower than I thought it would be.

LJ what are you talking about? I do not remember ever hearing any snappy metallic synths in an MGMT single

vienn?tta (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:39 (fifteen years ago)

liking this LCD soundsystem track, way, way better than the last one. could be they might be giants or even electropop half japanese - up into the point where the big beat kicks in, anyway. agree about the beautiful buzzy synth bass sound, but i also like the knife-style steel drum bit, too.

haven't heard this album, but doesn't he want daft punk to come over and play anymore?

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:39 (fifteen years ago)

Looks like I did vote for Window Seat.

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:40 (fifteen years ago)

all f-bombs should be taken w a grain of salt, but still, erykah song doing better in p&j = nagl folx

i've come around a little to "out of my mind" but still feel like it bites "green eyes" in an album-damaging way...

last night a Drugs A. Money saved my life (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:41 (fifteen years ago)

vienn?tta (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:42 (fifteen years ago)

First time hearing this Badu and now I want to hear it again. Lovely.

waka flocka flamini (pandemic), Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:43 (fifteen years ago)

erykah tune is gorgeous, of course. didn't vote for it, but should have. blame me for the low placing.

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Thursday, 27 January 2011 17:43 (fifteen years ago)

I'm talking about the high synths, not the synth bass in DYC

okok well as I said about the previous LCDS song, the synth tones are not the problem - in fact they're frequently the only thing I like. not my thing. listening to erykah now. it's smoooooth. and a little menacing. nice.
