Xgau coined the term to describe a bunch of atonal 80s underground post-punk, post-"No Wave" bands that were preoccupied with perversion and seediness. Idk how much Swans were a part of this, but I know early Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore, Butthole Surfers, and Big Black were a part of this...
(don't tell me I just turned Lex off the Swans ;_;)

Let's get going! I'm off out to a gig tonight so going to miss the culmination anyway, but want to catch as much as possible before I have to leave.
― emil.y, Thursday, 27 January 2011 16:29 (fifteen years ago)
i think it's johnny, not j0rdan, who's at the helm today - he said noon his time but i, er, don't know what his time is.
― lextasy refix (lex pretend), Thursday, 27 January 2011 16:30 (fifteen years ago)
imo the pigfuck aesthetic is most visible in certain '90s films such as Kalifornia, The Doom Generation, and Natural Born Killers

i'll spare the thread a big, serious, metaphor-strewn "review" of it, but i've also had a moment of revelation with that swans track. it again required headphones and a shit ton of volume. fucking amazing, one of the best things on here, complete 180 from my initial, bored "eh." basically, i was listening to it through shitty computer speakers at low volume yesterday, so all the noise and texture got lost. all i heard was the drony build and gira moaning. and unlike most of the other unfamiliar tracks that didn't impress me on the first pass, i didn't go back to make sure.
gonna go buy the album today.

i'm surprised u haven't already heard it dude
― flopson, Thursday, 27 January 2011 16:36 (fifteen years ago)
the swans album is amazing but no words/no thoughts is not one of my favorite tracks - i would have chosen "jim" or "eden prison"
― congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 27 January 2011 16:36 (fifteen years ago)
i think noon his time is half an hourish from now?
― teledyldonix, Thursday, 27 January 2011 16:37 (fifteen years ago)
yes. Johnny is on US Eastern Standard time.
― EZ Snappin, Thursday, 27 January 2011 16:38 (fifteen years ago)
YES -- "jim" esp. is really something

I've been experiencing a lot of these songs over the past few days as low quality youtubes played through my crummy work headset. Probably doesn't do the tracks justice. I'm hoping to take some time this weekend to play everything back through youtube via my blu-ray and stereo. May help me see/hear these in a different light.
― Moodles, Thursday, 27 January 2011 16:39 (fifteen years ago)
If you're playing from YouTube then it's probably not ever going to sound good, though?
― Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Thursday, 27 January 2011 16:42 (fifteen years ago)
Also have the TNP album, and haven't listened to it yet...liked We Want War but wasn't bowled over by it. I like how the derangement of the senses thing kind of undercuts the bombastic proggy cliches, but all the modern touches are kind of out-of-place...
― last night a Drugs A. Money saved my life (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 27 January 2011 16:43 (fifteen years ago)
liked it more than Gayngs, less than 'Sun' or the Ariel Pink song...
― last night a Drugs A. Money saved my life (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 27 January 2011 16:44 (fifteen years ago)
Some have sounded better than others, especially the official videos.

― Moodles, Thursday, 27 January 2011 16:44 (fifteen years ago)
Apart from Antebellum, I think the only songs on this list that make me shrug are Kesha, El Guincho, Javiera Mena, Rick Ross, Marina and Fives. The rest I either liked already or like now. That's not a bad batting average.

deej did you hear funk butcher's "pull me close"?
― lextasy refix (lex pretend), Thursday, 27 January 2011 16:52 (fifteen years ago)
It's a great track, kind of feels like a lost Basement Jaxx tune.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 27 January 2011 16:53 (fifteen years ago)
i liked the fives a lot deej! last sunday i didn't know what uk funky was but three hours ago i can be bowled over by katy b bcz she does both funky AND dubstep (i'm a shameless rockist)
but i mean, that's because of the fives. it's a great song, easily top 15...

― Moka, Thursday, 27 January 2011 16:55 (fifteen years ago)
i love "it's what you do" but it took me a couple of listens for it to stand out - "pull me close" i adored instantly, and is the one i could actually imagine being a genuine summer hit (obv it sucks that neither were).
― lextasy refix (lex pretend), Thursday, 27 January 2011 16:56 (fifteen years ago)
Damnit, this poll is always announced when I'm not at the computer and I end up having to read the whole thing on my iPhone on the way to and from work (Zing won't let me post on my phone for some reason). So I'm very behind and not getting to discuss the results as they come, even though I really want to.
This is a great list. A few things I don't know, but I feel MUCH more in touch with it than I did last year.
Love these polls - highlight of ILM each year really. I always end up discovering soemthing I love.

oh yeah 2010 was definitely better music-wise than 2009. At least it felt like it had more variety. 2009 felt too oppressive/obsessed with retro schticks for the most part to me.

wheyyyy
e40 album is def my own most underrated of last year - i found it kinda hard to digest TWO DISCS' WORTH of material - but this song is undeniable. not my fav off the album - think that's "got it" or "dem boyz" - but yeah a banger that i wish i'd heard in the wild a lot more last year.

The video is funny in how awkward most of their dance moves are. Seems they don't seem too comfortable with the clichee of dancing in your hip hop video.
