"Lightweight Jammin'" will be in the top 20

"Hold Yuh" is such a sweet song, I wish this type of thing could be big here but I haven't heard it other than of my own volition. It seems ridiculous that I've heard Katy B and Tinie Tempah out in the wild (love both obv) but not this.

considered tactically voting for "Lovesick" but went with the honest option. Glad to see it placed anyway, and a shame that High and Low won't make it.

lol @ me posting this, but lex is gonna have to explain in better detail the diff between why gayngs 'weak' vocals are somehow different than ciara's. i mean, i like both (ciara has more songs i like but when gayngs works it works) but his hypocrisy here -- anti-rockism only applies when talking about R&B apparently? -- is either a result of poor explanation (i.e. he means there are more problems w/ gayngs than just 'weak' vocals or w/e it was he said) or simply holding two entirely contradictory ideas in his head at once

ppl - good poll so far & thanks again to the poll-runners! Work schedule has been preventing me from participating too much during the day, as the results unfold, tho in anticipation of tomorrow's end run, I'm going to try to clear some time out of the way.
so far I am digging all the dance & rap tracks that have been showing up. gapdy-esque indie dominance has its place on so many other polls, after all (even tho I'm still a bit of a corny indie fuxor at heart).
only four tracks I voted for have placed so far:75. AZARI & III "Reckless (With Your Love) (Tensnake remix)" [228 points, 8 votes]68. RICK ROSS ft. STYLES P "B.M.F. (Blowin' Money Fast)" [238 points, 12 votes]59. LCD SOUNDSYSTEM "I Can Change" [250 points, 8 votes]26. KANYE WEST ft. PUSHA T "Runaway" [396 points, 13 votes]
thought about voting for these, but decided to put weight behind corresponding albums instead:(TIE) 64. FOUR TET "Love Cry" [242 points, 9 votes]58. GIL SCOTT-HERON "Me and the Devil" [254 points, 10 votes]44. CARIBOU "Odessa" [278 points, 11 votes]27. LINDSTRØM & CHRISTABELLE "Lovesick" [394 points, 18 votes]46. JANELLE MONÁE "Cold War" [272 points, 11 votes, 1 first place vote]
<3 all of these - they were on my shortlist, but eventually got the axe:77. DIDDY-DIRTY MONEY "Ass on the Floor" [222 points, 7 votes] - song/album are too new to me to properly contextualize, but <3 it so far 76. VAMPIRE WEEKEND "Giving Up the Gun" [222 points, 10 votes, 1 first place vote]67. THE KNIFE "Colouring of Pigeons" [242 points, 7 votes, 1 first place vote] - #26 on my list51. GAYNGS "The Gaudy Side of Town" [266 points, 13 votes] - voted highly for "cry," which prob does not have a chance at this point ;_;42. HOT CHIP "One Life Stand" [288 points, 11 votes]41. LADY GAGA ft. BEYONCÉ "Telephone" [294 points, 11 votes, 1 first place vote]40. GUCCI MANE "Lemonade" [300 points, 10 votes]
wish I had voted for this & am psyched that it placed!:55. JUSTIN BIEBER "U Smile (Ambient Version)" [256 points, 9 votes, 1 first place vote]
I have not heard 30-40% of these yet (including some of the most *popular* trax). will investigate & report back..

if i could vote again after reading this thread, I would vote all lyrikkal tracks
― symsymsym, Thursday, 27 January 2011 03:59 (fifteen years ago)
voted for J Biebz 800% slower, Drake Deadboy edit, Nicolas Jaar, Jamie Woon, Caribou 'Sun', and 'Lovesick' (and 'Lemonade' last year)
hoping that a couple of others, maybe Wut or BRKLN CLLN might show up still, but not likely anything else on my list will
love a lot of these I didn't vote for...25 choices seems too few with so much good stuff to choose from
― Dan S, Thursday, 27 January 2011 04:02 (fifteen years ago)

thought I'd check out a minute or two of each of these in the spirit of discovery, but keep in mind I am a hopeless snob and not really a trax kinda guy, just trying to learn here.
77 Diddy - ick76 Vampire Weekend - don't even75 Azari - terrible74 Crystal Castles - ick73 Taylor Swift - voice sounds weirdly pinched... nice accompaniment and writing. I can hang with this.72 Marina - whiney was right on with the Florence And The Machine comparison, this is OK.71 RIhanna - much better than i expected70 Fives - hm I dunno. not my thing at all but I would dance to it.69 Lemme Smang It - I love this kind of goofy minimal rap, take out the vocals and this could almost be Coil. The first one I kept on the whole way.68 Rick Ross - nononono67 The Knife - somehow I didn't vote for this but I like the record for what it is66 Cassie - nah... well this does have a good keyboard sound. but nah.65 Kelis - pretty good! bright and sunny.64 Four Tet - like this record a lot
(at this point my wife joins me in listening)
63 Javiera - reminds me of the Eurythmics, in a good way. Laurie says "nah".62 Swans was actually my #1 when I checked my ballot, amazing tune.61 Games - god no60 Taylot Swift - Mine - 20 seconds in Laurie yells "boring!" from the kitchen, I couldn't make it through the chorus.59 LCDSS - Gary Numan royalties lol. Laurie sez "I don't like his voice".58 Gil Scott-Heron - this is more like it, I never got around to listening to this record but I will check it out. Laurie says yes to Waits comparisons and also mentioned Beefheart.57 We R Who We R - oh god no. Laurie says "trash".56 Nicki Minaj - this shit kills, awesome. love the beat and the cavernous sound. would dance again. ahaha the outro! doesn't need Eminem at all as has been noted.55 Bieber slowed down - this is amazing54 Fireworks slow mo mix - this was OK until the vocals came in, ick.53 Lady Antebellum - Laurie gives me a disgusted look 20 seconds in.52 Beach House - we liked this - the record never made an impression on me but I will try again.51 Gayngs - weird, but no thanks. the static noises are interesting. Laurie says "it's been done before".50 Taio Cruz - noise night weirdness intro, Laurie says "sounds like something you'd like". Before the first verse she was begging me to turn it off.49 Kanye - All Of The Lights no no no48 Ariel Pink - we like this, I voted for it.47 Taylor Swift - Back To December - Laurie shakes her head, wrinkles her nose, says No.46 Janelle Monae - Cold War - I almost like this, club fodder45 Nicholas Jaar - this is cool... is this what y'all talk about on those slo-mo house threads?44 Caribou - Odessa - this album sounded overmodulated to me on first listen (I have really tried with this band). Laurie immediately dislikes the "crow-like sound". Good but I just can't connect with something about the sounds... too busy.43 El Guincho - Bombay - love love love this, the whole record is solid.42 Hot Chip - well I can't get effusive but I can listen to it, more than I can say for some of these41 Telephone - is ubiquitous and I like it but probably just cuz of burning cigarette sunglasses40 Lemonade - this is swank, would love to drive around playing this in the car real loud39 Lil B - Age Of Information - good, needs more attention than I have now38 Katy B - OK but seems a little slight37 Jamie Woo - inoffensive beginning... huh, this is almost like new wave! OH GOD NO at 1:3036 Caribou - Sun - OK this is much better, I'll try the album again35 Black & Yellow - nope34 MIA Born Free - one of the worst tracks on an occasionally great record (but I need to see this Letterman version)33 These New Puritans - like this much more than I thought even tho the signifiers (This Heat, Young Gods) are some of my faves... these guys also sound a teeny bit like Test Dept. a nice surprise. Laurie likes the pacing and rhythms.32 Tensnake - Coma Cat - like this much more than that Azari thing, straight up club bangin31 Earl Sweatshirt - nah, not down.30 Robyn - nope (we pick up the pace a bit here)29 Gyptian - Laurie likes this, I can definitely hang with it. Heartfelt and sweet..28 Ciara - no27 Lindstrom - yeahhh this is cool.26 Kanye again - this sure takes a while to get going, then the vocals kill it. does he say "douchebags"?25 Tinie Tempah - I like the verses, Laurie likes the chorus, this is good!24 Kanye - Power - haha wtf King Crimson and martial chorus, impressively weird23 Sade - this is OK... Laurie sez "I guess so"22 Tik Tok - Laurie puts her head in her hands, says "why do I have to hear this"?21 Good Intentions Paving Co - we love her, I wrote abt this already upthread, my fave on the record and I voted for it.
looking forward to tomorrow, thanks poll runners and voters!

I have never in my life attempted to stay current with popular music, but hanging out in the Listening Room the last week or more really made me understand how far out of touch I was, so I've been checking these out as the reveal has rolled out (thx for the youtubes). All I can say so far is DAMN I'M SO OLD. I did mark 10 tracks that I actually liked, though, and three more that were kind of interesting.

sade - "soldier of love"sorry not have kept up, cuz i loved sade once upon a time. while i enjoyed hearing her voice again, this song struck me as sadly hookless and staid. maybe it will grow on me? and maybe it exists more to be respected than loved.
― normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Wednesday, January 26, 2011 4:50 PM (Yesterday) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink
you should definitely give this another listen b/c this is so offtm. i've never had any particular interest in sade, but this song is amazing. the combination of the popping martial beat and her lush, rich voice, plus the use of space, is fucking beautiful. the wild wild west/tryin my hardest, doin my best line is a hook.
love unreservedly:
40. GUCCI MANE "Lemonade" [300 points, 10 votes]39. LIL B "The Age of Information" [302 points, 11 votes]32. TENSNAKE "Coma Cat" [342 points, 11 votes, 1 first place vote]27. LINDSTRØM & CHRISTABELLE "Lovesick" [394 points, 18 votes]23. SADE "Soldier of Love" [410 points, 16 votes]
also dig:38. KATY B "Katy on a Mission" [322 points, 13 votes]37. JAMIE WOON "Night Air" [324 points, 13 votes]36. CARIBOU "Sun" [330 points, 11 votes] i definitely dig some aspects of what he does, but kinda wish this guy would stop with the floppy beats and just make a go at real house music tbh35. WIZ KHALIFA "Black & Yellow" [330 points, 13 votes]31. EARL SWEATSHIRT "Earl" [344 points, 10 votes]30. ROBYN "Hang With Me" [346 points, 14 votes]28. CIARA ft. LUDACRIS "Ride" [394 points, 12 votes] this would go in love unreservedly if it weren't for ludacris ;_; why does he have to be there? this song is soooo fucking good besides him.22. KE$HA "TiK ToK" [424 points, 14 votes, 3 first place votes] never really need to hear this again, but it was good while it lasted
actively dislike:21. JOANNA NEWSOM "Good Intentions Paving Company" [428 points, 13 votes]
― karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 27 January 2011 05:34 (fifteen years ago)
CAD -- "Lemme Smang It," kinda despite myself. Listened to it a 2nd time without looking at the video and yeah, kinda confirmed that I actually liked the song.
Swans, LCD, Gil Scott-Heron, the slowed down Bieber, Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, Jaar, El Guincho, Lil B, M.I.A. The kinda-sortas were the Caribou and Joanna Newsom tracks.
