I'll be honest, when I first heard the name, I thought it was a R&B diva inspired by the work of Kara Walker.
― Tyler/Perry's "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" (jaymc), Wednesday, January 26, 2011 1:34 PM (16 minutes ago) Bookmark
lol, i made the same mental connection when i first heard the name. didn't think it was literally inspired, but i expected an R&B diva, and couldn't help thinking of kara.
― normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:54 (fifteen years ago)
an R&B diva inspired by the work of kara walking would (might) be amazing, btw. somebody should be taking notes.
― normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:55 (fifteen years ago)
i was 100% sure lady antebellum was pretentious pop-punk
― abcfsk, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:57 (fifteen years ago)
voted for that joanna newsom track btw! asked a friend to show me some album highlights and when that one came up I was basically all 'whoa that one is AWESOME' and whaddaya know, it's done well for itself
still haven't heard even 1/3 of the album (ffs newsom, 45 minutes is your length), but that song kills it

So psyched for the inevitable Volebeats run in the top 20.
― kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:00 (fifteen years ago)
super surprised to see it place and stoked too cause it's yeah the only song i can really take from that rec but i love the heck out of it (#didn't vote/#no unicorn)
― bear, bear, bear, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:02 (fifteen years ago)
I can't sometimes get past a singer's voice if the songs are strong enough and I'm determined to do it, but Joanna Newsom is never going to be someone I can handle.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:04 (fifteen years ago)
can't=can
it's not her length when she's writing several excellent songs at 8 or 9 minutes plus. listen to the album.
xp
― bobbyhackettscornet (whatever), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:04 (fifteen years ago)
I agree - lots of good stuff on the Joanna Newsom album, though nothing else that sounds like GIPC

― bobbyhackettscornet (whatever), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:04 (1 minute ago)
fair enough, I'm hardly one to talk given some of the stuff I stan for. three CDs is ridiculous though

*goes and listens to Pan Sonic's Kesto*
ah fine, it's her decision, I'll shut up :)
that song really killed it and another one I heard killed it much less though so I think editing may have been an idea, sall
― I've been dancing since 9 and I'm tired and hungry (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:10 (fifteen years ago)
i still feel so virtuous that i sat through all three fucking newsom cds.
i have no desire to go back to any of them - such meandering songs.
― lextasy refix (lex pretend), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:10 (fifteen years ago)
I'm hoping that since her album last year was 3 cds long, it'll be another several years before she releases anything else.
Okay, that's not really true...people can like what they like. It's not my place to piss on it. I just think there are better ways to spend your time listening to music.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:11 (fifteen years ago)
SO SAD nothing from Kingdom is going to make it.
i voted "mind reader" - i think if he'd had one obvious track there'd have been enough voters to get him in, but as it is they'll be split between "mind reader", "fogs" and "that mystic"― lextasy refix (lex pretend), Wednesday, January 26, 2011 8:29 PM (1 hour ago) Bookmark

voted mindreader also, so that makes 3 of us, but I could have seen it in the top 60, but not the top 20 tbh.
― waka flocka flamini (pandemic), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:11 (fifteen years ago)
btw Ys is about 45 (ok, 50) minutes and is made up entirely of such epics, and is very good, hence my line, but artistic development must be catered for, no two albums are alike, blah
ke$ha slowed down is kinda great btw

thing is i find i have less and less patience w/any album with more than one cd's worth of material these days - this is obv a function of how much music i (have/want to) consume but even the e40 double album, most of which i actively LIKED, i found a little hard to digest
― lextasy refix (lex pretend), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:14 (fifteen years ago)
btw gonna digest these tomorrow, too tired tonight. seems like today was pretty stellar by most accounts :)

yeah my only complaint about most of today's lot, with only a handful of exceptions, would be "too low"
― lextasy refix (lex pretend), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:17 (fifteen years ago)
yeah, super good run
― bear, bear, bear, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:18 (fifteen years ago)
idk I quite admire the sheer bloody mindedness of releasing a triple, 3-hour album of long, dense songs in this restless, impatient age. It helps that I like the music anyway tho, I suppose.

amazing day ITT. thanks everybody - especially to jo/jo, but likewise to all who voted for things that were not taio cruz and kesha.

DWELE - "Power" (fuiud, but not really, cuz i know ud, w/e)
like a lot:GUCCI MANE - "Lemonade"KATY B - "Katy on a Mission"WIZ KHALIFA - "Black & Yellow"M.I.A. - "Born Free"TENSNAKE - "Coma Cat"TINIE TEMPAH - "Pass Out"

KANYE WEST ft. DWELE - "Power" (fuiud, but not really, cuz i know ud, w/e)
I agree. Voted for it too. I just kind of wish it was his lone contribution to 2010 and didn't get buried in the mess of Good Fridays and MBDTF.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:26 (fifteen years ago)
i voted "mind reader" - i think if he'd had one obvious track there'd have been enough voters to get him in, but as it is they'll be split between "mind reader", "fogs" and "that mystic"
I voted for Mind Reader as well and don't expect it to place and I'm going to blame anyone who voted for Fogs or That Mystic for this.
Nothing I like placed since I stopped following the thread today, although I don't mind Soldier Of Love I always feel it should build a bit more than it does.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:29 (fifteen years ago)
Btw - for those of you who love 'Hold Yuh' and haven't heard it yet - reggaeton version is a treat:
Los Rakas - Abrazame (Uproot Andy remix)

Also great production values on the video for an unsigned band.

Oh also this isn't the Robyn song I thought it was, this one is pretty good actually.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:35 (fifteen years ago)
I love the video for "Hang With Me" — it's basically just Robyn on tour or whatever, but there's a sweetness/loneliness about it that's not often captured in makeshift "on the road" videos.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:37 (fifteen years ago)

Pretty sure I know most of what's going to be in the top 10 but the ONE Arcade Fire song nominated is going be ridiculously high, top three probably.
