lonely drunk ppl pining for sex, idk seems easy to see to me

wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:03 (fifteen years ago)

i like need you now alright, altho i've been way overexposed to it & am a bit numb to its charms. loved it at first tho. nothing to get or not, mechanistically it's pure affect w/ a good hook take it or leave it

or, what k3vin said

flopson, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:03 (fifteen years ago)

that guitar wail is pretty cool, yeah

cant be worse you mean?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:04 (fifteen years ago)

every verse is orchestrated a little differently, it's really fleetwood mac-y (as sh@kedown said), the m-f tradeoff + harmonies are great for the material, the two lead guitars comment really well on the vocals, it's big and emotional and well put together

nb i'm not a pop-country dude by any stretch

goole, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:05 (fifteen years ago)

ha this thread moves fast, that's about "need you now"

goole, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:05 (fifteen years ago)

I think this year's selection is already quite a bit better... and I'm one of the complainers!

Moodles, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:05 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm not sure I can add more to what K3vin said -- except that I esp. like the deployment of pedal steel.

Tyler/Perry's "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" (jaymc), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:06 (fifteen years ago)

today had some gems but yesterday was historically dire imo xp

fruit of the goon (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:07 (fifteen years ago)

i really like rev's "dynamite" post upthread. it's true like, ever part is a hook strong enough to be the anchor of its own song. also really like how loud & heavy the house piano is, the stabs are so sharp and chunky, and really guide the song through each part so deliberately, definitely gives it more of an epic scope. i feel like ppl who have yet to realize its undeniable power just need to consider the possibility of it being a jam & then it will be immediately apparent, like when someone solves a riddle & you can't imagine how you could have possibly ever not known it

i hit the floor cause thats my
plans plans plans plans

flopson, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:20 (fifteen years ago)

thnx for the explanations dudes, i guess lady antebellum just aint 4 me

& yeesh goole its not like i dont explain in pretty detailed terms why i like things when other folks ask about them

tuomascratch beat (deej), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:24 (fifteen years ago)

i still can't believe they thought lady antebellum was a good name, i'm like table is the table with j.stalin on that one

zvookster, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:25 (fifteen years ago)

Tru. I got plenty of explanation about "Smang It" when I asked for it, but still idgi. xp

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:25 (fifteen years ago)

ok fair enough!

schlocky isn't wrong anyway...

xp to deej

i still can't believe they thought lady antebellum was a good name

It may not be good, but it definitely strikes a chord with housewives who read Southern Living and watch Paula Deen.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:27 (fifteen years ago)

like i heard a ton of other lil b tracks but this is head and shoulders above

ciderpress, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:27 (fifteen years ago)

the lil b-ness of it is basically that super-honest confessional style, just wedded to traditional west coast underground rap

tuomascratch beat (deej), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:28 (fifteen years ago)

taio cruz's "dynamite" is def my fav dr. luke vomit-house joint -- pretty much cuz it sounds like an akon song

― altered scones (J0rdan S.), Thursday, July 8, 2010 3:22 AM (6 months ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

also the melody is pretty obvious (not that all dr. luke's stuff isn't) but the "whoa-oh-oh"ing seems more appropriate since the song just feels... a bit bigger, fuller, more housey than kesha, flo rida, katy p etc

& taio cruz obv doesn't have a "good" voice by any means but he doesn't sound like he's being strangled when he does it

this is what i originally posted about "dynamite"

wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:28 (fifteen years ago)

I can't really complain about "Dynamite"--in 2007 my song of the year was Sean Kingston's "Beautiful Girls"

last night a Drugs A. Money saved my life (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:29 (fifteen years ago)

Dynamite resembles Akon/Kingston in much the same way I think Cold War resembles Gnarls Barkley

last night a Drugs A. Money saved my life (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:30 (fifteen years ago)

i still can't believe they thought lady antebellum was a good name

I'll be honest, when I first heard the name, I thought it was a R&B diva inspired by the work of Kara Walker.

Tyler/Perry's "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" (jaymc), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:34 (fifteen years ago)

I've listened to "Pass Out" three times in a row now and I think I'd like to revise my earlier statement that "Frisky" is the superior song. I'd put them neck and neck, actually.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:38 (fifteen years ago)

JF, can you email my ballot to me?

going to be on an airplane tomorrow but will be very surprised if Tightrope doesn't win...so congrats Tightrope

Sure...coming thru ilx mail

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:50 (fifteen years ago)

while i was out:

kanye - "power"
love this song to death. feel i should duck while saying that, but i do i do i do. like it even more than "monster", which i like a lot. love the rapping, the beat, the crimson sample, the weird production, the facepalm jokes, everything. if the rest of MBDTF were even half this good, i'd have voted for it in albums. but no.

sade - "soldier of love"
sorry not have kept up, cuz i loved sade once upon a time. while i enjoyed hearing her voice again, this song struck me as sadly hookless and staid. maybe it will grow on me? and maybe it exists more to be respected than loved.

ke$ha - "tik tok"
an obvious hit, can totally see why otherwise sensible people might love it, but her snarky, painted-on kookiness works my last nerve. it's like listening to someone else's crazy party through the wall. at 3am.

joanna newsom - "good intentions pc"
yeah, okay, i dunno. probably the best track on the album, fwiw. i'm happy for those who like to have to hear it.

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:50 (fifteen years ago)

i like dynamite more than any akon song. although i really like the new akon/mj single. do you like that one j0rdan

flopson, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:52 (fifteen years ago)

i have not heard it

wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:53 (fifteen years ago)

lol, i made the same mental connection when i first heard the name. didn't think it was literally inspired, but i expected an R&B diva, and couldn't help thinking of kara.

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:54 (fifteen years ago)

an R&B diva inspired by the work of kara walking would (might) be amazing, btw. somebody should be taking notes.

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:55 (fifteen years ago)

i was 100% sure lady antebellum was pretentious pop-punk

abcfsk, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:57 (fifteen years ago)

voted for that joanna newsom track btw! asked a friend to show me some album highlights and when that one came up I was basically all 'whoa that one is AWESOME' and whaddaya know, it's done well for itself

still haven't heard even 1/3 of the album (ffs newsom, 45 minutes is your length), but that song kills it

I've been dancing since 9 and I'm tired and hungry (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 21:59 (fifteen years ago)

So psyched for the inevitable Volebeats run in the top 20.

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:00 (fifteen years ago)

super surprised to see it place and stoked too cause it's yeah the only song i can really take from that rec but i love the heck out of it (#didn't vote/#no unicorn)

bear, bear, bear, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 22:02 (fifteen years ago)

I can't sometimes get past a singer's voice if the songs are strong enough and I'm determined to do it, but Joanna Newsom is never going to be someone I can handle.
