i like "we want war" but i sometimes turn it off before the choral bits at the end
― opeth winfrey (donna rouge), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:23 (fifteen years ago)
I think it may have something to do with live drums processed like booming dance drums plus "intensity".
― Moodles, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:24 (fifteen years ago)
this is the first i've ever seen this dude & i'm pretty sure he's just like gr80 irl
― wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:24 (fifteen years ago)
btw contenderizer you missed the best 2 minutes of the song
am listening again, tbh, cuz i felt i'd given it short shrift. i just wasn't ready to feel the darkness. still don't like the guy's vocals when they're given clear prominence, but i'm weathering it out.
― normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:24 (fifteen years ago)
Hey, Tensnake stole my APC40!
"coma cat" is a great track that i completely forgot about when making my own list ;_;
― opeth winfrey (donna rouge), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:24 (fifteen years ago)
this track has basically the most perfect hook ever.
― skip, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:25 (fifteen years ago)
actually once you start drawing TNP comparisons outside of british indie - nine inch nails/massive attack/tori amos/indeed anyone in the late 90s playing around with industrial/modern classical/electronic influences, and there were lots of them - TNP suddenly seems way less impressive.
― lextasy refix (lex pretend), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:25 (fifteen years ago)
"coma cat" is 7+ long btw so here's the radio edit if anyone wants that instead coma cat edit

oh goddamn this tensnake track is flawless
― vienn?tta (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:26 (fifteen years ago)
I am p sure he played this when I saw him in Philly
― vienn?tta (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:27 (fifteen years ago)
and that it was the moment that I was like "oh shit this guy is rly good"
Never heard this before, sounds very 1988.
― Danzig, with tears in my eyes (DavidM), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:27 (fifteen years ago)
today's tracks have been so good
― teledyldonix, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:27 (fifteen years ago)
tensnake <3
tho i felt there were lots more ~anthemic~ balearic trax along similar lines last year (jacques renault remix of midnight magic's "beam me up", primarily).
i don't think he's like gr80 irl - well, i don't know gr80, but tensnake is quiet and kinda shy and plump. i just put my interview w/him on my tumblr. key quote = "just perfect happy sunshine vibes. that’s what i like."
― lextasy refix (lex pretend), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:27 (fifteen years ago)
jesus c, these handclaps
― vienn?tta (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:28 (fifteen years ago)
This beat is Technotronic, is what I'm saying. A good thing, obviously.
― Danzig, with tears in my eyes (DavidM), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:28 (fifteen years ago)
Oh the 'inertia creeps' shout from Matt DC OTM!!
― waka flocka flamini (pandemic), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:28 (fifteen years ago)
Yes, but all those acts forgot to add in the French Horns and Clarinets!
― Moodles, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:28 (fifteen years ago)
today's choices making me feel like l jagz :(
― congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:29 (fifteen years ago)
Didn't hear the Tensnake until 2 weeks ago otherwise it would have made my list for sure.
― waka flocka flamini (pandemic), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:29 (fifteen years ago)
TNP is, uh, okay. Kind of wrote quite a lot here but have deleted it, suffice it to say that the fact that they are clearly influenced by stuff I love dearly brings me quite close to hating them.
Tensnake is well cheesy.
― emil.y, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:29 (fifteen years ago)
did y'all hear "need your lovin", btw? the b-side of "coma cat" - a proper fully vocal disco track, really amazing.
― lextasy refix (lex pretend), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:29 (fifteen years ago)
OK - I was about to give up on the Tensnake track, but then those awesome synth steel drums came in around 2:00 and I was sold.
― Moodles, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:30 (fifteen years ago)
Coma Cat just feels like one of those timelessly perfect house records, like Chime/Voodoo Ray level perfect. It sends dancefloors into states of ridiculous grinning euphoria.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:30 (fifteen years ago)
ok i really need to hear this track i guess
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:31 (fifteen years ago)
It sounds like Axel F. goes Caribbean.
― Moodles, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:31 (fifteen years ago)
"Coma Cat" seems like it needs a club atmosphere to be properly enjoyed, so I'm only enjoying it at 50% potential right now.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:31 (fifteen years ago)
okay, on a more closely attentive second pass, i feel ... much the same about "we want war". it's hugely impressive, overwhelming and immersive. i can't deny it, but i don't know that i actually like it very much. i'm not sure though. there are elements that i adore, and others that bore me a little. i'm curious about the band, especially given the this heat comparisons, so i plan to spend a bit more time with it.
― normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:31 (fifteen years ago)
deej i don't think tehre's an official video? the one i linked under the image is the full length song tho
― wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:31 (fifteen years ago)
what renault tracks would you recommend besides that?
― skip, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:31 (fifteen years ago)
like i mean this might be true:
but almost all of the dance tracks on this thread, to my admittedly uneducated ears, sounds like it came out 15 years ago, and apparently that makes it no less impressive to ILM, so what's the difference?
― congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:32 (fifteen years ago)
Did the Tensnake remix of "Manthem" get nominated? Kind of paint by numbers but I enjoyed that a lot this year.
― skip, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:33 (fifteen years ago)
it's actually the only one i've heard! apart from his remix of john talabot's "matilda's dream", which is ok but the original is AMAZING. i shall have to remedy that, i think.
― lextasy refix (lex pretend), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:33 (fifteen years ago)
whatevs, i probably shouldn't be opining on the dance tracks, I don't really know anything about anything. i like the nicolas jaar track though.
― congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:33 (fifteen years ago)

^^this was the best rapping of 2010
― wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:34 (fifteen years ago)
so what's the difference?
It depends on what you're a stan of and what you like to debase.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:34 (fifteen years ago)
wow awesome
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:34 (fifteen years ago)
shit, tensnake is way more my speed. love the steel drum/bells bit! one of my favorites of what's come up today, though there's lots of competition.
― normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:34 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah I wasn't really sold on Coma Cat until I heard it on a club. The club was previously playing Guetta house pop stuff so as cheesy as this is it was a very welcome refreshing and euphoric moment for me.
Not feeling 'these new puritans' but happy that it's here. It keeps the list healthy, with variety which is usually lacking at this stage of the ranking.
― Moka, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:35 (fifteen years ago)
earl video is probably nsfw btw
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:35 (fifteen years ago)
Is this the barbershop one? Oh it is, or all his videos set in a barbershop? Like this.
― waka flocka flamini (pandemic), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:35 (fifteen years ago)
Need Your Lovin is also terrific. I think Coma Cat beats Beam Me Up in the anthem stakes for sheer ubiquity but they're both great.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:35 (fifteen years ago)
This is the first artist in the ranking whose existence I was completely unaware of.
― Moka, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:36 (fifteen years ago)
I really tried with Earl Sweatshirt, honest...but I'm clearly not his target demo.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 18:36 (fifteen years ago)
"earl" was in my top 5
