"night air" really is kinda amazing

wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:35 (fifteen years ago)

yes!

Dan S, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:37 (fifteen years ago)

katy b first one i voted for! it's the dubby reggae descending ooo-ooo-oon in the vocal that got me into it. then i'm just into songs abt walking into the spot i think, esp. when they are actually kinda chill

zvookster, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:37 (fifteen years ago)

i heard 'night air' for the first time while i was already making my tracks list for this, and it went straight in

ciderpress, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:37 (fifteen years ago)

yeah 'night air' was top ten for me, but original version

"night air" also burial's finest moment imo (he co-produced). and the MOR tinge that people snark on is actually the secret to why it's so great.

genuinely magical to listen to while walking home on a freezing winter's night at 3am. i love how it's equal parts comforting and threatening.

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:38 (fifteen years ago)

middlebrow dubstep heads calling actually-great music 'MOR' shocker

tuomascratch beat (deej), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:38 (fifteen years ago)

im bringing shocker back btw

tuomascratch beat (deej), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:39 (fifteen years ago)

nice track

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:40 (fifteen years ago)

i forgot how dope age of information is, i love the offbeat yelping interacting w/ offbeat snare

flopson, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:40 (fifteen years ago)

what? the people who think "MOR" is a snark aren't the er "middlebrow dubstep heads" (as if that phrase actually means anything), they're the people snarking on dubstep

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:40 (fifteen years ago)

pop songs about "the club" felt way too omnipresent in 2010, but katy b was one of the few who managed to pull it off really well (probably because she really nailed some of the emotional complexities of club culture)

prolego, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:41 (fifteen years ago)

i didn't know about the burial connection but it makes so much sense

ciderpress, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:41 (fifteen years ago)

maybe in the UK. ppl into dubstep here are not checking 'night air' bcuz it sounds nothing like dubstep xp

36. CARIBOU "Sun" [330 points, 11 votes]
Youtube

wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:43 (fifteen years ago)

Damn, this is a great run... Sun is the one unimpeachably great Caribou track.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:44 (fifteen years ago)

I get the appeal of Katy B but it doesn't grab me right now. Can see certain circumstances where it would, though.

Absolutely cannot stand the Jamie Woon vocals - I have the feeling that musically I might quite like this but he won't shut up and I can't carry on listening to it.

emil.y, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:47 (fifteen years ago)

and the MOR tinge that people snark on is actually the secret to why it's so great.

i don't hate "night air," but i'm having resistance issues, and suspect they have something to do with this. love the track, but the vocal only makes me think of patrick cullen moping about the rain-slick streets at night. prefer the original to the version that apparently won.

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:47 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, the vocals are the weak point for me as well. Can still dig it though.

Rejoice that you weren't eaten (chap), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:48 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, I have softened considerably on the album but still play "Sun". In my head it's paired with that Delorean track for some reason.

skip, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:48 (fifteen years ago)

surprised but i actually like this caribou track on 1st listen

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:48 (fifteen years ago)

I like the run so far, much more interesting than the one we had yesterday imho. The constant repetition of the word 'sun' is sort of maddening to my ears but it doesn't stop me from enjoying the infectious propulsiveness of the song. Makes me want to stand up, clap and dance. But I'm in my office. And I can't.

Moka, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:49 (fifteen years ago)

i keep meaning to listen to this caribou album... this song is a banger

wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:50 (fifteen years ago)

same here

flopson, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:51 (fifteen years ago)

love the filtering in this track

wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:53 (fifteen years ago)

whoops -- this is obv #35

wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:53 (fifteen years ago)

video for Night Air is very creepy

skip, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:53 (fifteen years ago)

"sun" is crazy great, like disco boredoms

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:53 (fifteen years ago)

"black & yellow" is a banger, wish i'd had room to vote for it

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:54 (fifteen years ago)

the shots of the praying mantis in the "night air" are incredibly beautiful

wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:54 (fifteen years ago)

cool

tuomascratch beat (deej), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:54 (fifteen years ago)

i like this

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:54 (fifteen years ago)

wow didn't realize black&yellow had a presence on ILM

ciderpress, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:54 (fifteen years ago)

"black & yellow" is another one that would've been on my ballot if voting was a few weeks later -- i didn't really buy it until i started hearing it on the radio a ton & it's just great -- the verses have a weird off kilter flow & combined w/ wiz's enunciation i think they're pretty unique & fun

wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:55 (fifteen years ago)

black & yellow is that rare rap song that is a straight-up rap song & charts but is liked by clubgoing pop-listening women more broadly

these used to be so common :(

tuomascratch beat (deej), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:55 (fifteen years ago)

I seem to keep going on about Caribou live but seeing him do "Sun" was one of my top musical moments of 2010.

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:55 (fifteen years ago)

I didn't hear this until the Girl Talk album. Made me want to check it out. Love it, especially "no keys, push to start" for some reason.

waka flocka flamini (pandemic), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:55 (fifteen years ago)

great jpg

wish I could listen to these youtubes at work

Dan S, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:56 (fifteen years ago)

people who enjoyed both "night air" and the deadboy drake remix earlier might be interested in the deadboy remix of "night air" - the moment when deadboy starts cutting up the vox is so so good

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:56 (fifteen years ago)

Finally! A song about Pikachu.

Moka, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:56 (fifteen years ago)

OK, this beat is pretty great.

lol @ "clubgoing pop-listening women"

those songs are basically my own favourite type of songs

Ha, maybe explains why I voted for it?

Tyler/Perry's "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" (jaymc), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:57 (fifteen years ago)

discovered some really good songs for the 1st time today thanks to this poll.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:57 (fifteen years ago)

dont know why thats 'lol,' this is the demographic that made rap music in the early 00s cross over in such a big way

tuomascratch beat (deej), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:58 (fifteen years ago)

pink and purple

teledyldonix, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:58 (fifteen years ago)

Fuck why did I not bother to listen to that Caribou album??

vienn?tta (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:58 (fifteen years ago)

hey jaymc have you checked my pnj top ten at all?? fives was on it & most of the stuff i voted is fairly pop-y, including the rap

tuomascratch beat (deej), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:58 (fifteen years ago)

this run of songs so far is fantastic
