Loving the bass and piano in this.

yeah, snare's great tho

verses are solid (love that rmx, lex), wish the chorus were a little less irritating

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:18 (fifteen years ago)

Prob one of my least favourite Gucci tracks tbh but I still love him.

waka flocka flamini (pandemic), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:19 (fifteen years ago)

ok yeah just finished it, wonderful track

teledyldonix, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:19 (fifteen years ago)

i put it on again, really like it.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:20 (fifteen years ago)

lemonade is a classic & would have ranked much higher im guessing if the year it came out vs. year it peaked were the same

tuomascratch beat (deej), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:20 (fifteen years ago)

it's not one of my top gucci singles even, but i think it's a classic, still -- the beat & hook are pretty unusual for him and are really cool, the hook at least is kind of a throwback w/ the kids singing -- & then sticking to the yellow theme the whole time is kind of a gucci trademark & is still v impressive to me

wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:21 (fifteen years ago)

I had forgotten about this Lil B. Kinda track that sound wise is hard to tell when it was made. I mean that in a good way. Reminds me of Gangstarr actually.

ha i LOVE the chorus. "lemon pepper wings with the freeze cup" <3 it's so summery, actually fits weirdly alongside acknowledged summer r&b classics like "never leave you", "move ya body", "my boo" etc.

most underrated thing about "lemonade" = the BASSLINE.

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:22 (fifteen years ago)

love both these tracks so far. "lemonade" is absolutely perfect. def would have voted for them.

wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:23 (fifteen years ago)

This Lil B track is great. Very 90s production. Missed it last year.

I've been dancing since 9 and I'm tired and hungry (Dorianlynskey), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:23 (fifteen years ago)

fuck, this lil b amazing, and way more moving than it has any right to be

Yeah I was thinking something like that. Definite spacey old skool vibe, nice track.

Rejoice that you weren't eaten (chap), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:24 (fifteen years ago)

lil b was in my top 5 -- i wasn't sure if everyone was gonna love it or if ppl were gonna be put off -- it's def his most accessible song

wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:24 (fifteen years ago)

internet nerds loving song about being an internet nerd shocker

tuomascratch beat (deej), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:24 (fifteen years ago)

Love that Katy B tune.

Rejoice that you weren't eaten (chap), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:25 (fifteen years ago)

ha i LOVE the chorus. "lemon pepper wings with the freeze cup" <3

re: lemonade. and yeah, i love the lemon pepper wings line, too. it's just the piano that bugs me on the chorus (love it on the verses).

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:25 (fifteen years ago)

I did a complete 180 on Katy On A Mission - hated it at first and then got to love it because it really does work so well as a pop song in its own right, the fact its dubstep is almost an irrelevence, it's all about the vocal for me.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:27 (fifteen years ago)

i listened to the katy b again last night & i started to warm up to it but i don't really see how it's loved

wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:27 (fifteen years ago)

internet nerds loving song about being an internet nerd shocker

yeah, but it's also about being lost in the world and knowing it and not knowing how to deal, but sort of flailing ahead anyway. not necessarily a universal condition, but one i can sure as shit relate to. got me a feeling a little bit.

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:28 (fifteen years ago)

Just read your link J0rdan. Lil B's comment on your blog is so cool!!

waka flocka flamini (pandemic), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:28 (fifteen years ago)

Not going to be here much this evening...just checking in to say I voted for Lil B and Katy B, both being tracks I loved from scenes I don't pay much attention to and which I wouldn't have discovered if not for ILM. Thanks ILM!

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:28 (fifteen years ago)

Katy On A Mission was pretty ubiquitous in this country - part of the appeal for me is the excitement of having a potentially huge, credible pop star who's taking decent dancepop back into the charts.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:29 (fifteen years ago)

yeah "the age of information" makes me wish lil b made an effort to rap properly more, cuz he's really good at it.

katy b! THIS RIGHT HERE I SWEAR WILL END TOO SOOO-OOOO-OOOON.

also u&k for katy b newcomers - b-side "louder" and follow-up single (which would have had a chance of placing if it hadn't been released in dec) "lights on".

what i love about katy's approach to her solo career - which is itself a really groundbreaking thing by mere fact of its existence, coming out of a scene that historically privileges producers and MCs over "mere" singers, and breaking through to a mainstream that has rarely taken singers from the UK urban underground seriously - is that in both her lyrics and the way she's happy to sing over such a variety of beats, she really accurately captures the ordinary & feminine experience of clubbing and club music - away from the endless, self-serious blogwarz and nitpicking and genre border policing that this scene is so often subject to.

Is this kinda Wearing My Rolexy in the background?

yeah esp at the beginning before the drums come in, the synths sound very "wearing my rolex"

wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:30 (fifteen years ago)

hay lamp asked me to ask one of the poll guys if you could email him his ballot please? thanks

plax (ico), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:31 (fifteen years ago)

Matt DC (or another mod), could I ask you again to add a link to peter in montreal's Grooveshark playlist in the opening post?

Tyler/Perry's "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" (jaymc), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:31 (fifteen years ago)

i listened to the katy b again last night & i started to warm up to it but i don't really see how it's loved

jeez, it seems so immediate and obvious to me, an effortless club-pop hit waiting to happen. all it needs is that beat and that "ooh-ooh-ooh" really. fucking massive.

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:31 (fifteen years ago)

too bad that this has no chance of crossing over to the US

wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:32 (fifteen years ago)

Katy On A Mission was pretty ubiquitous in this country

This is true I guess, but I never listen to the radio and if I'd heard it out somewhere I wouldn't have known what it was if I hadn't seen it on ILM...

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:32 (fifteen years ago)

yesss katy b. i also love "lights on." she's doing everything right so far imo

sadly it does have no chance of crossing over to the us :(

Youtube

wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:34 (fifteen years ago)

if someone wants to direct the thread to the original version of "night air" that would be cool

wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:34 (fifteen years ago)

AWESOME. this has been an amazing run

teledyldonix, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:34 (fifteen years ago)

cool, nearly voted this #1

plax (ico), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:34 (fifteen years ago)

haha everything today has just been POW! POW! AWESOME!

<3 "night air"

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:35 (fifteen years ago)

"night air" really is kinda amazing

wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:35 (fifteen years ago)

yes!

Dan S, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:37 (fifteen years ago)

katy b first one i voted for! it's the dubby reggae descending ooo-ooo-oon in the vocal that got me into it. then i'm just into songs abt walking into the spot i think, esp. when they are actually kinda chill

zvookster, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:37 (fifteen years ago)

i heard 'night air' for the first time while i was already making my tracks list for this, and it went straight in

ciderpress, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:37 (fifteen years ago)

yeah 'night air' was top ten for me, but original version

tuomascratch beat (deej), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:38 (fifteen years ago)

"night air" also burial's finest moment imo (he co-produced). and the MOR tinge that people snark on is actually the secret to why it's so great.

genuinely magical to listen to while walking home on a freezing winter's night at 3am. i love how it's equal parts comforting and threatening.

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:38 (fifteen years ago)

middlebrow dubstep heads calling actually-great music 'MOR' shocker

tuomascratch beat (deej), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:38 (fifteen years ago)

im bringing shocker back btw

tuomascratch beat (deej), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:39 (fifteen years ago)

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 17:40 (fifteen years ago)
