its crazy that you had't heard reckless though it's like the best song ever
― flopson, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 03:33 (fifteen years ago)
im not that crazy abt the new diddy album either & i have a pet paranoid controversial theory that a lot of ilm contraristans clung to it exaggeratedly hard as an antidote to mbdtf hype. otoh i still feel like i could listen to it one more time & have a huge change of heard. & ass was not my favourite track either. i think i voted for hello good morning though
― flopson, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 03:35 (fifteen years ago)
45. NICOLAS JAAR "WOUH" not awful. def boring. i guess i don't "get" this stuff. is this dubstep? what makes this a standout song? explain me.

"we r who we r" is one of my favorite singles of the year -- the final two choruses are a great payoff & generally I now consider this to be Luke's masterpiececo-sign this― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, January 25, 2011 5:00 PM (Yesterday) Bookmark

this wd make sense if the contraristans werent largely ppl (me, tim f, al) who have followed diddy's career for a long time & were repping for his last album as well. it helps that it sorta operates as a rallying point to pick up extra support from less-contributing ilxors probably, but i think its a bit much to suggest that this record is simply benefiting from kanye h8 -- i mean, its a really unique & interesting record even if its not up your aesthetic alley (which in my case it def is)

i got so mad at ppl saying how amazing this video was last summer i had to give myself a time out
it's a great song and all, but you should really check out the video. it's amazing.
― normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 03:48 (fifteen years ago)
i dig the song, but the parts that aren't dancing mostly just seem like weak rip off of tarantino + gaga in crazy costumes.
― karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Wednesday, 26 January 2011 03:51 (fifteen years ago)
lol @ "seem" like weak rip off of tarantino

re: nicholas jaar, i figure. and i can't tell you what might make it interesting from within the context of whatever subgenre it might inhabit, but as an outsider, i love its fanatical attention to detail and space, to an irresistible head-nodding swing within a sea of seeming nothing. and it's beautiful, especially around 4:30 in when it goes all muted gospel and then the piano kicks in. it's head music, yeah, but the phish comparison makes no sense. phish are all about gunking up the horizons with trippy widdle, while this allows the horizons just to be while getting funky in the middle distance with the simplest tools imaginable. the kicker is the way it finally does jam out at abt 6:30, and maybe that's where you're drawing your phish comparison, but it's only for like 20 seconds, and by that point dude's earned it. i don't think there's a more lovely or hypnotically involving song on this list.

xp deej - yeah i mean it's more a conspiracy theory i until now secretely held just because i didn't hear what u were all hearing in it & all the posts comparing them rly started to grate. obviously it is total ilm catnip & would have equal or similar gotten love w/ more distance from kanye

― fruit of the goon (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 04:11 (fifteen years ago)
ha i wouldn't call it ilm catnip though, def for a certain bloc of posters but can't wait for the dismissals by chillwave voters when album countdown comes around
― fruit of the goon (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 04:13 (fifteen years ago)
or its a 'hey diddy's good now' crowd which will cause our cabal convulsions (maybe just me)

who are the posters who like chillwave i thought that was just a whiney scapegoat

i like chillwave
i hate the diddy album
― gr8080, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 04:16 (fifteen years ago)
there are some but tbh mostly i like using the idea of them as a lazy punching bag
xp there u go

i get down w/ some chillwave. & i like the youtubes on this thread a lot i know everybody else has already forgotten abt it but can we have one chillwave thread that isnt entirely ¡LOLwave! or w/e
― flopson, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 04:19 (fifteen years ago)
yeah and it's not like the diddy album is for everyone or anything - i mean granted you legit have bad taste if you can't immediately find 3-5 songs you really like but most of the other songs open up with multiple listens
― fruit of the goon (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 04:22 (fifteen years ago)
gr8080 hates 'shades' so disregard his opinions on the diddy imo

72. MARINA & THE DIAMONDS "Shampain" wtf is this garbage how did 10 ppl even bother to find this let alone vote for it
She's not an unknown, but the people who like her really like her (including me!)

^^^hates 'smang it'
― challopian youtubes (deej), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 04:32 (fifteen years ago)
"shades" is so bloated it makes MBDTF look skinny
― gr8080, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 04:33 (fifteen years ago)
i like both the diddy and the kanye albums
is this allowed
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 04:34 (fifteen years ago)
xp don't hate, but rather don't understand the love
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 04:35 (fifteen years ago)
"smang it" is a hilarious comedy bit that is also a solid and catchy beat/hook in it's own right. the video's intentionally sparse/amateur aesthetic adds to it's charm.
― gr8080, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 04:42 (fifteen years ago)
Caribou track > a ton of the stuff I wound up voting for
― vienn?tta (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 04:50 (fifteen years ago)
I might agree. I think I only listened to Swim once or twice before deleting it. I should've given it a little more time to set in.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 04:52 (fifteen years ago)
Caribou album passed me by when it came out (I had it but listened to it maybe once) but I listened to it again (after a Chelonian mix included a song from it) and I really got into it. Another occasion where I think I shouldn't be voting in this poll because I'm going to hear something from 2010 in about 4 months time that will be the Best. Thing. Ever. and my ballot will be retroactively moot.
― Gukbe, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 05:12 (fifteen years ago)
i think that's the case for everyone though! i'm sure if we polled 2008 right now the results would be way different than they were at the end of 2008
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 05:28 (fifteen years ago)
2008 was such a great year for albums ime
― fruit of the goon (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 05:29 (fifteen years ago)
i heard like half of my favourite '09 releases in the first half of '10. ime it's rly hard to keep up w/ music & get a sense of what is worth skipping & ignoring in the rush of current releases
― flopson, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 05:30 (fifteen years ago)
I think we're all missing out on different stuff though. What you need to catch up on may be what I heard and voted for and vice versa. This is the value of a poll of a community whose opinion(s) you're generally interested in.
― Tim F, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 05:31 (fifteen years ago)
True, but I think I only really got into about 7 albums over the first 8 months of the year.
Also moving back to America has changed my taste drastically. There are things I love now that I would never have bothered with before I moved. Can't help context but Lex will not be pleased with my contributions.
xposts.

i gotta be honest i feel like my lists this year -- particularly singles lists -- are probably both the strongest & closest to my taste that ive ever made ... like, i did a lot more crowdsourcing from different ppl whose taste i respect (that ilx thread on underrated rap tracks is one example) and sorta did a lot more filtering & thinking through ... it just seems like there is so **much** shit out there that its actually easier to love my votes & not feel the need to throw them away to random consensus shit ... in another year i might have voted for 'BMF' which of course i like & is gonna go down as some kind of classic, but it wasnt hard to find 50 rap songs i liked more this year (never mind other genres) .... anyway i think as a result i find these results more disappointing than i have in the past, not bcuz they're worse but just because ive increased the number of channels where I can find music that hits particular spots for me so perfectly

the Justin and Wayne parts are "So Appalled"-level tedious but there is nothing on MBDTF as euphoric and wonderful to me as the best parts of "Shades"
― trv kvnt (some dude), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 05:42 (fifteen years ago)
I've made efforts over the past year to target my listening at the things that really grab me on first blush, but the downside of that is that there are only a few things I've allowed to slow burn. I just accumulate so much music now, but a bunch of it gets deleted just to clear space (either because I don't like it or I just need to make room). That, and the fact that I've become a more song-oriented listener than an album-oriented listener. I buy a lot of single songs, but very few albums.
Anyway, I'm just rambling. But I feel like the more music I hear, the less I actually listen to.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 05:44 (fifteen years ago)
the justin & wayne parts are awesome. wayne aping andre 3k & i dont get what the problem w/ timberlake is?? the collaboration on shades makes way more sense musically than the hodgepodge of any kanye track
― challopian youtubes (deej), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 05:46 (fifteen years ago)
"swim" might be my favorite album of the year. "Andorra" was like my #2 or #3 of the decade tho.
― gr8080, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 05:49 (fifteen years ago)
is JT on "Shades" your idea of the storied 'good grocery bag verse'?
