i do kinda get the feel sometimes that like 90% of lil b's references are going over his audience's heads entirely (not talking about rev here, obv v. knowledgeable dude, but hes a convenient inspiration for that observation)

possibly -- lil b is a massive music nerd and probably listens to more & disparate rap music than even his most ardent fans

it's weird how suddenly central cormega seems on ilx lately due to the jacka and lil b, i was gonna start a realness v true meaning poll last week due to it but there was a reason not to i can't remember now, maybe it was justifying leaving his other shit off to make it a bit more interesting to me personally

I've never really listened to Cormega tbh, seems so far from what even backpackers here have historically been into. Like there's this whole school of NYC shit that is considered classic by peeps back east but no one here talks about ever that Mega falls into.

Here meaning Seattle or maybe more broadly the west coast, not ILX obv.

It seemed back in the early decade backpackers here were mostly into Rawkus cats and LA/bay area dudes. Now it seems more like they're into local dudes and Atmosphere types.

Come to think of it, your average backpacker around here's taste has gone to shit.

when i was in h.s. it felt like being a backpacker was more about an approach to rapping, in the 00s it became about how much u incorporated indie culture & ideas or w/e, as hipsters became a cool thing & def jux or w/e found there was money in pfork reviews. remember their comps w/ like suicide girls on the cover??

I dunno, I never felt like there was any kind of indie/p4k-ization of backpacker values until within the past few years. During the early part of the decade I pretty much was a backpacker and I barely knew indie rock existed. It wasn't until like...dudes started rapping over Peter Bjorn & John and Justice songs that I felt there was any kind of crossover (at least running that direction, indie dudes very well might have been bumping backpacker shit, but that's the other side of the perspective from where I come from, so I just don't know.)
